TMC gives Vivekananda reply to BJP's SP Mookerjee demand

1 2 Kolkata: Union minister Sukanta Majumdar on Sunday sought the renaming of Sealdah station as Syama Prasad Mookerjee Terminal. Trinamool, on the other hand, demanded that it be named after Swami Vivekananda, who arrived at the Sealdah station after his return from Chicago. "State govt should send a proposal to rename Sealdah station after Syama Prasad Mookerjee. We will forward that to central govt and get it sanctioned. It should be named Syama Prasad Mookerjee Terminal. It will be a tribute to those who were forced to leave Bangladesh following attacks," Majumdar said after flagging off the first air-conditioned passenger train from the station. TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh said: "We have a port named after Syama Prasad Mookerjee. Why not name the station after Vivekananda? Sealdah station has a historical connection with Swamiji. However, changing the name of a station requires multiple permissions and that will not be easy." In 1897, after his return from Chicago via sea route, Vivekananda took a train from Budge Budge and got down at Sealdah station. The protests started while Majumdar was flagging off the train. When the BJP supporters tried to counter them, it ended up in a scuffle. Majumdar, who had left the station area by then, came back after getting to know about the scuffle. INTTUC supporters said they would continue to shout 'Jai Bangla' if attacks on migrant workers didn't stop. TMC supporters started shouting slogans against BJP after they saw Majumdar. "We have not come here for any political programme. It is a programme of central govt and this will help thousands of daily passengers. TMC is afraid of Centre as they don't want systemic intensive revision of voter list in Bengal," Majumdar said. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Ruckus at petrol pump over ‘layoffs'

1 2 Kolkata: The alleged sacking of some employees from a petrol pump by the facility's owner at Phoolbagan last month led to a ruckus on Tuesday afternoon. A local office-bearer of the TMC-affiliated labour union, Kavita Gupta, was accused of barging into the petrol pump with its former employees, who were removed from their jobs, and assaulting Sumana Das Roy, the owner. The former staffers allegedly misbehaved with Roy's daughter. When the pump employees intervened, the accused INTTUC leader and her group allegedly attacked them as well. Declining any wrongdoing, Gupta claimed she only protested against derogatory remarks made by Roy. Both parties filed written complaints at the Phoolbagan Police Station. In June, these employees had staged a protest with several demands, leading to 14 of them allegedly leaving their jobs. The employees, though, claimed that they were sacked. Police said some demands, including hike in salaries, were met, but the employees did not withdraw their protest as their PF was not being paid. The PF dispute lead to a case at the high court, cops added. The owner apparently hired new employees. Gupta claimed the removal of old staffers was unjust. Probe is on. Cops have detained three.

While the trade unions of Left parties and Congress have supported the strike, the Indian National Trinamool Trade Union (INTTUC) have opposed the Bharat Bandh. 'We firmly believe that strike is no solution and does not serve any purpose as far as the working people are concerned. We are completely opposed to any form of strike or slow down. Wasting Mandays is completely against the principle of ours,' INTTUC president Ritabrata Banerjee has said. Ever since coming to power in 2011, the Trinamool Congress that had championed the cause of strikes while in Opposition have opposed bandh citing loss of man days and harassment to working classes. The West Bengal government has directed all its employees to attend office on Wednesday (July 9). In a notification issued by transport secretary Saumitra Mohan, the State govt has urged all public and private transport operators, including state transport undertakings (STUs), to operate normal services on that day.
