Kolkata: Union minister Sukanta Majumdar on Sunday sought the renaming of Sealdah station as Syama Prasad Mookerjee Terminal. Trinamool, on the other hand, demanded that it be named after Swami Vivekananda, who arrived at the Sealdah station after his return from Chicago.
"State govt should send a proposal to rename Sealdah station after Syama Prasad Mookerjee. We will forward that to central govt and get it sanctioned. It should be named Syama Prasad Mookerjee Terminal. It will be a tribute to those who were forced to leave Bangladesh following attacks," Majumdar said after flagging off the first air-conditioned passenger train from the station.
TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh said: "We have a port named after Syama Prasad Mookerjee.
Why not name the station after Vivekananda? Sealdah station has a historical connection with Swamiji. However, changing the name of a station requires multiple permissions and that will not be easy." In 1897, after his return from Chicago via sea route, Vivekananda took a train from Budge Budge and got down at Sealdah station.

They alleged that BJP was trying to lodge attacks on the Bengali-speaking population in other states. The protests started while Majumdar was flagging off the train. When the BJP supporters tried to counter them, it ended up in a scuffle.
Majumdar, who had left the station area by then, came back after getting to know about the scuffle. INTTUC supporters said they would continue to shout 'Jai Bangla' if attacks on migrant workers didn't stop.
TMC supporters started shouting slogans against BJP after they saw Majumdar.
"We have not come here for any political programme. It is a programme of central govt and this will help thousands of daily passengers. TMC is afraid of Centre as they don't want systemic intensive revision of voter list in Bengal," Majumdar said.

PM should resign if EC says there are discrepancies in electoral rolls: TMC's Abhishek

Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee on Tuesday said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his cabinet should resign and the Lok Sabha be dissolved if the Election Commission says there are discrepancies in the electoral rolls. Banerjee, who is the national general secretary of TMC and considered the number two in the Mamata Banerjee-led party, said that the "EC cannot selectively say" that the voter list is fine in some states such as Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, but not in West Bengal, Bihar or Tamil Nadu. "If SIR (special intensive revision) of electoral rolls is conducted, it should be held across the country and the first step should be the resignation of the prime minister and his cabinet and the Lok Sabha has to be dissolved," he said. The TMC leader claimed that if the present government has been elected on the basis of the same voter list, then the legitimacy of the central government is null and void. Lok Sabha polls in the country were held in mid-2024. "If the Election Commission is saying that there are discrepancies in the electoral rolls... the Lok Sabha should be dissolved and then SIR be held across the country," Banerjee told reporters at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport here. Banerjee said that based on this voter list, the prime minister was elected and so were more than 240 Lok Sabha MPs of the BJP. "The MPs elected on the basis of this voter list will also elect the country's President and the Vice-President," he said. Banerjee alleged that the BJP has got the SIR done in Bihar since it knows they would lose the assembly elections in the state due later this year if people apply their voting rights. "Rules cannot be different for different states, it should be the same for all states," he said, demanding that SIR be held in all states and not in some "selected states".

Row Erupts In UP After Tomb Outside Fatehpur Mausoleum Vandalised Amid Hindu Temple Claims

LUCKNOW: A political controversy erupted in Uttar Pradesh after a tomb outside the Fatehpur mausoleum in the state was vandalised. Tension flared up in Fatehpur on Monday after a centuries-old tomb outside a mausoleum was vandalised by a group of people, claiming it had been built over a demolished Hindu temple. The incident, which took place at the tomb of Nawab Abu Samad, has triggered a heated political war of words and prompted the administration to deploy heavy police and Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) forces in the area. Barricades have been set up around the disputed site to prevent further unrest. The purported video circulating on social media shows members of Hindu groups damaging parts of the mausoleum and hoisting saffron flags atop it. The visuals have drawn sharp reactions from the local Muslim community and the Opposition, who have accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of fostering communal divisions. In a veiled attack on the BJP, Congress MP Imran Masood told IANS, "This is their agenda, and this is what they are working on. If someone from the opposite side is involved, bullets will be fired, but if it's people from their ideology, they will be pacified through persuasion." "People are going to religious places and vandalising them, and the police are folding their hands and escorting them out. The hatred they are sowing will be very difficult to uproot," he added. Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati urged the state government to act decisively. Taking to X, she posted, "In the dispute/controversy ongoing in Uttar Pradesh's Fatehpur district regarding the mausoleum and temple, the government should not allow any community to take any steps that could lead to communal tension there or disrupt mutual brotherhood and harmony. The government must take this matter seriously and, if necessary, take strict measures." Samajwadi Party (SP) leaders also criticised the ruling party, claiming that the attack was part of the "conspiracy" to spark communal tensions. SP MLA Atul Pradhan, speaking to IANS, said, "The BJP has conspired to create communal tensions in Fatehpur. They are trying to spread anarchy." Kanpur SP MLA Mohammad Hassan Roomi claimed a "land mafia" was exploiting the BJP's agenda to seize property, demanding the government investigate the role of BJP members in the matter. Earlier on Monday, SP chief Akhilesh Yadav accused the BJP of divisive politics, saying, "Only when society is divided and hatred is spread will the BJP be successful in politics. These people are following an ideology created by the British." He also recalled earlier communal incidents in Fatehpur, including the demolition of a mosque deemed "illegal" and a separate incident in which a youth was killed, with action taken only after public pressure.

BJP's Ashok Dinda gets Kolkata Police notice for remarks during RG Kar rape-murder protest

Kolkata Police on Tuesday issued summons to Bharatiya Janata Party MLA Ashok Dinda for his remarks made during the 'Nabanna Abhiyan' rally, held as part of the protests marking the anniversary of the RG Kar Medical College rape-murder case, news agency PTI reported, citing an official. During the RG Kar crime anniversary protests in Kolkata on 9 August, BJP MLA Ashok Dinda stated that 'the day is not far' when, following orders from the BJP leadership, they will 'beat up police". During the rally, Ashok Dinda allegedly said BJP workers would 'beat up' the police. He also said 'the day is not far, once they get instructions from the BJP's command, they will beat up cops, who have to hide behind chief minister Mamata Banerjee". The cricketer-turned-politician has been asked to appear before officers at the New Market Police Station on 17 August, the official said. 'Dinda, during Saturday's rally, threatened our officers and provoked others to assault our on-duty officers. He also assaulted a guard of an IAS officer. He has been summoned to appear before New Market Police Station on August 17,' the officer told PTI. The RG Kar Medical College rape and murder incident took place on August 9 2024, when a 31-year-old female postgraduate trainee doctor was found dead in a seminar room on campus. The case sparked widespread protests and outrage across the country, with many demanding justice for the victim. After the Calcutta High Court expressed dissatisfaction with the police's handling of the case, the investigation was transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which has since arrested several individuals. Here's what Ashok Dinda said: Watch Ashok Dinda, during the 'Nabanna Abhiyan' rally on August 9, said, 'That day is not far when we will have to beat up the police as well. They will be thoroughly thrashed. Once the BJP gives instructions from the top, we will beat up the police so much that they will have to hide behind Mamata Banerjee.' West Bengal Police used a lathi charge against protesters during the rally, which was held to mark the first anniversary of the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College. Video footage showing Dinda threatening and abusing police officers was seized, according to officials. Seven cases have been registered—five by Kolkata Police and two by Howrah Police—for allegedly obstructing security personnel, assaulting them, and damaging public property during the march to the West Bengal secretariat on August 9. Chaos and violent clashes occurred across Kolkata and nearby Howrah on Saturday, the day marking one year since the rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at the state-run RG Kar hospital. The unrest left the victim's mother hospitalised with a head injury. The police and protesters clashed at multiple locations and in phases during the 'Nabanna Chalo Abhiyan', a march demanding 'justice' for the RG Kar victim. The event featured at least three converging protest processions across Kolkata and Howrah. The victim's father alleged that his wife was assaulted by women police officers during the rally on 9 August. The event was organised to mark the first anniversary of the RG Kar Medical College rape and murder incident. Describing the events of the rally as 'a sad incident,' he drew a direct link between the assault and the tragedy they endured last year. (With ANI, PTI inputs)
