[UPDATED] Police report lodged after purported JAC document leaked
KUALA LUMPUR: A police report has been lodged regarding the purported Judicial Appointments Commission (JAC) meeting minutes that were leaked online yesterday, said government spokesman Datuk Fahmi Fadzil. Fahmi said he was made to understand that a report had been lodged on the matter, but could not verify the legitimacy of the document. Fahmi, who is also the Communications Minister, said the cabinet had not discussed the matter yet. However, he said if the document was legitimate and classified, it would fall under the Official Secrets Act (OSA). "I cannot confirm whether the document that is circulating is legitimate or not. At the same time, if it is a legitimate and classified document, specifically one that is marked as secret, then OSA would apply. "So we must be cautious, firstly, about whether the document is legitimate," he said at a press conference here today after the launching ceremony of IPRM AI Festival 2025, Global PR AI Strategic Communication Insights, You & AI: Meet @ Bangsar. Fahmi said the government would leave investigations to the police. When asked whether the matter would be raised in the next Cabinet meeting, he said it was possible, as the prime minister is very attentive to matters that arise in public attention. "Usually, I wouldn't know (what the cabinet meeting agenda is), but usually the prime minister is very attentive to issues that arise in the public domain. So there is a possibility it will be discussed," he said. On whether the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) had taken steps to remove the alleged document from social media, Fahmi said the regulator had not issued any updates yet. He said MCMC acts based on public complaints, but the decision to remove content lies with the respective platforms. "So MCMC can make a request if there is a complaint, but it is the platform that decides to take it down if it deems the content to be in violation," he said.

Asean to adopt KL Declaration on social media and AI use
KUALA LUMPUR: The Kuala Lumpur Declaration on the use of social media is expected to be tabled and adopted by Asean member states at the 47th Asean Summit this October. Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said the declaration would help Asean countries adopt common strategies to address the growing impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI). "This is also particularly on AI use on social media, including misuse of AI for scams, slander and many more. "We believe Asean countries can play an active role, and social media platforms, too, must be proactive in clearly labelling AI-generated content," he said at a press conference after the launch of IPRM AI Festival 2025 here today (July 13). Fahmi said several platforms have started tagging content to indicate when images or videos are AI-generated. In line with this, he said, the government may consider similar measures under the Online Safety Act, which is expected to come into effect by the end of this year. At the same time, he said, ministries, agencies, departments, organisations and companies must understand the benefits, challenges and limitations of integrating AI into their operations.

Top PKR leaders yet to meet, Fahmi says on calls to suspend 9 MPs
KUALA LUMPUR: PKR has yet to meet over calls to suspend nine party members of Parliament who called for a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) into alleged irregularities in the appointment of senior judges, including the Chief Justice. PKR information chief Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said this when asked to comment on growing calls from the party's grassroots to suspend the nine MPs. At least 20 PKR divisions in Johor and Kedah have called for the MPs to be suspended. "The central leadership council has not met yet, you may refer to the party's secretary-general, Datuk Fuziah Salleh, for clarification," he said at a press conference today. Earlier, Fahmi, who is the communications minister, launched the IPRM AI Festival 2025. On July 7, the nine MPs who called for the RCI were Pandan MP Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli, Setiawangsa MP Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, Subang MP Wong Chen, Ampang MP Rodziah Ismail, Wangsa Maju MP Zahir Hassan, Balik Pulau MP Datuk Bakhtiar Wan Chik, Ledang MP Syed Ibrahim Syed Noh, Sungai Siput MP S. Kesavan and Batu Pahat MP Onn Abu Bakar. The PKR divisions that want the MPs suspended said the elected representatives breached party discipline and the code of ethics over their public demand for an RCI.
