International Surgical Sleep Society Endorses Hyoid Suspension for Sleep Apnea Treatment
AIRLIFT® Emerges as the most effective, FDA-Cleared Hyoid Suspension System for Managing Obstructive Sleep Apnea LOS GATOS, Calif., May 16, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Following a rigorous review of clinical research, the International Surgical Sleep Society (ISSS) recently published a position statement supporting hyoid suspension as a safe and effective approach in the medical and surgical management of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). From the position statement: "Hyoid myotomy/suspension (HS), whether performed separately or combined with other upper airway procedures, is considered effective and non-investigational as part of the comprehensive surgical management of symptomatic adult patients with mild obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and adult patients with moderate and severe OSA assessed as having tongue base or hypopharyngeal obstruction." The ISSS position notes four decades of clinical research demonstrating the viability of hyoid suspension as an effective treatment for OSA, including referencing a 2021, multi-center study from Van Tassel et al using AIRLIFT techniques for a series of thirty-nine patients undergoing hyoid myotomy and suspension combined with uvulopalatopharyngoplasty. 76.9% patients had surgical success with a mean AHI reduction of 69%, from 49.9 +/-25.6 to 15.4 +/-14.9 (p < .001)1. The clinical benefits of hyoid suspension are achieved more controllably, easily and quickly than ever through AIRLIFT®, which utilizes the Encore System from Siesta Medical to provide a less-invasive, well-controlled approach to HS. "AIRLIFT offers a unique alternative for patients who failed CPAP, have epiglottic collapse or do not qualify for hypoglossal nerve stimulation, or who simply are looking for an OSA treatment option whose treatment action doesn't require any additional patient action," said Peter Martin, CEO of Siesta Medical, which manufactures AIRLIFT and the Encore System. "Historically, hyoid suspension approaches for treating these patients have been viewed as difficult or dependent on appropriate patient anatomy for success. AIRLIFT hyoid suspension helps to correct both these issues, and the position statement from ISSS offers additional confidence in the effectiveness of the procedure." AIRLIFT hyoid suspension is minimally invasive and well-tolerated, and is significantly more cost-effective than alternative stimulation implants. The procedure involves advancing the hyoid bone and suspending it with two miniature implants and suture. Due to the muscle attachments on the hyoid bone, the procedure allows a narrow or blocked airway to open and become more stable during sleep. The procedure can prevent epiglottic collapse by tensioning the hyoepiglottic ligament, tensioning the lateral airway walls, and anteriorly displacing the tongue base. Patients who get the AIRLIFT Hyoid Suspension procedure as part of a multilevel treatment plan see a median 74% improvement in sleep apnea obstructions.1 Learn more about the benefits of AIRLIFT or access the full ISSS position statement here. About Siesta MedicalSiesta™ Medical is a privately held medical device company founded in 2009 that focuses on a simple, effective, and lasting treatment for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). To perform the AIRLIFT® procedure, Siesta Medical designed the Encore™ System and the Revolution™ Suture Passer, an integrated suite of instruments and implants designed to streamline hyoid and tongue suspension, enable efficient, simple implantation, decrease intraoperative time, and provide durable, positive outcomes. UPenn updates guidelines to SEVIS terminations amid rising visa revocations
The University of Pennsylvania has updated its online guidance for international students following visa revocations and terminations of immigration statuses, as confirmed by university officials and The Daily Pennsylvanian. On April 21, UPenn revised its 'SEVIS Termination FAQ' page, originally launched by International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) on April 6, to include additional information related to public safety, housing, and academics. This comes after eight UPenn affiliates had their visas revoked, seven of whom also had their SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System) records terminated, including one undergraduate student, five graduate students, and one alumnus on a sponsored visa, as reported by the spokesperson of UPenn to The Daily Pennsylvanian. The university's updated FAQ explains that a terminated SEVIS record renders an individual's F-1 or J-1 immigration status inactive. 'A terminated SEVIS record means you are out of status and can't legally study, work, or remain in the US,' the page states. It also notes that 'depending on the circumstances, you may begin to accumulate unlawful presence from the date of termination.' While ISSS-initiated terminations follow a series of warnings, the university emphasized that external terminations, such as those linked to visa revocations or background checks, are automatic and beyond ISSS's control. (Join our ETNRI WhatsApp channel for all the latest updates) According to The Daily Pennsylvanian, ISSS is 'monitoring students' visa statuses twice a day through SEVIS.' The publication also reported that over 1,700 international students and graduates across the US have had their visas revoked amid ongoing immigration enforcement. Live Events You Might Also Like: International students file legal challenges over widespread US visa revocations In guidance provided under 'Public Safety & Penn Police,' the FAQ notes that 'The University of Pennsylvania Police Department does not enforce immigration regulations, including SEVIS,' but acknowledges that public areas of campus remain accessible to law enforcement without a warrant. Students are advised to contact UPenn's Division of Public Safety and reminded of their right 'to remain silent and decline communication' when approached by immigration officials. The university also addressed potential impacts on financial aid, billing, and housing. While a terminated record may affect scholarship eligibility, emergency support could be available. Students no longer attending classes are directed to Student Billing for payment adjustments. The FAQ further outlines that most student activities, campus services, and wellness facilities are limited to currently enrolled students, restricting access for those with inactive immigration status. Penn continues to advise students with terminated SEVIS records to consult ISSS for case-specific guidance. The university said students may either leave the US or apply for a new visa and I-20/DS-2019, noting that 'terminations linked to visa issues or legal matters may negatively impact future US visa eligibility.' Four Emory University students faces immigration record termination
The Brief Emory University discovered that SEVIS records for three alumni and one current student were unexpectedly terminated by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, affecting their legal immigration status. The termination of SEVIS records can lead to immediate loss of legal status, requiring affected individuals to leave the U.S. or apply for reinstatement, raising concerns about federal actions impacting noncitizen students. Emory's ISSS is providing support to affected individuals and has created a FAQ document to assist with immigration compliance, while the university continues to monitor the situation closely. ATLANTA - Emory University confirmed that four members of its international community have been affected by the unexpected termination of their immigration records by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The incident raises concerns about the legal status of students and alumni in the U.S. on student visas. What we know According to a message sent Thursday by Interim Provost Lanny S. Liebeskind, Emory's Office of International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) discovered on April 8 that SEVIS records for three alumni and one current student had been terminated without prior warning. The alumni were still under Emory's immigration sponsorship as part of their post-graduation practical training, while the student remains enrolled at the university. Dig deeper The SEVIS system, or Student and Exchange Visitor Information System, is a federal database used to monitor international students and scholars on F-1 and J-1 visas. Termination of a SEVIS record typically results in the immediate loss of legal immigration status and can trigger significant consequences, including the need to leave the country or apply for reinstatement. The incident follows similar terminations reported at other U.S. universities, highlighting growing concern over federal actions impacting noncitizen students. What they're saying "Upon learning of these terminations, ISSS reached out to the affected individuals to provide support," the university said. Emory officials say they are continuing to monitor the situation closely and have pledged to communicate directly with any additional students or scholars who may be affected. ISSS, part of the Global Engagement office led by Vice Provost Jane Gatewood, has also created a Frequently Asked Questions document to assist those navigating the complexities of international travel and immigration compliance. "As we continue to navigate this rapidly changing environment together, please strive to take care of yourselves and each other," Liebeskind wrote. "Remember that Emory has resources to support your well-being." The Source The details in this article come from a letter from the Interim Provost Lanny S. Liebeskind, Emory's Office of International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) to students.
