UK travellers face £5,000 fines for buying five items from duty free under new rules

More info Travellers have been warned they could be hit with fines reaching £5,000 for trying to bring five items through customs - even if they bought them from duty-free. The government brought in tough new rules earlier this year to tackle an outbreak of a serious disease spreading across Europe. This means that anyone coming back from affected regions including Spain, France, Italy and Greece must make sure they don't have any forbidden items in their luggage. READ MORE - ITV Good Morning Britain star announces baby news live on air READ MORE - Jet2 'sorry' as mum and kids 'traumatised' at being refused to flight home The existing restrictions mean that anyone caught carrying items including sandwiches, cheese, cured meats, raw meats or milk into the country will be stopped at the border. It continues to be banned for visitors from all EU countries entering Great Britain to bring items such as sandwiches, cheese, cured meats, raw meats or milk into the country, reports Bristol Live. This applies regardless of whether the products are wrapped or packaged, or whether they were bought at duty-free shops. Officials said that those found with these products will be required to either surrender them at the border or have them seized and destroyed. "In serious cases, those found with these items run the risk of incurring fines of up to £5,000 in England." The Government has put measures in place to prevent the spread of foot and mouth disease (FMD) following a rising number of cases throughout Europe. In a bid to safeguard the health of British livestock, the livelihoods of farmers, and the nation's food security, travellers are now barred from bringing in meat from cattle, sheep, goats, and pigs, as well as dairy products, from EU countries into Great Britain for personal use. While Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) poses no threat to humans, it is a highly infectious viral disease that affects cattle, sheep, pigs, and other cloven-hoofed animals such as wild boar, deer, llamas, and alpacas. Despite there being no current cases in the UK, the outbreak on the continent presents a significant risk to farm businesses and livestock. The disease can lead to substantial economic losses due to decreased productivity in affected animals, as well as loss of access to international markets for animals, meat, and dairy. In light of confirmed FMD outbreaks in Germany, Hungary, Slovakia, and Austria earlier this year, the Government has already prohibited personal imports of meat from cattle, sheep, and other ruminants, as well as pig meat and dairy products from these countries. These new restrictions apply solely to travellers arriving in Great Britain, with no imposition on personal imports arriving from Northern Ireland, Jersey, Guernsey, or the Isle of Man. Farming Minister Daniel Zeichner, at the time of the launch, stated: "This government will do whatever it takes to protect British farmers from foot and mouth. That is why we are further strengthening protections by introducing restrictions on personal meat and dairy imports to prevent the spread of the disease and protect Britain's food Deputy Chief Veterinary Officer for international and trade affairs Dr Jorge Martin-Almagro said: ". UK Deputy Chief Veterinary Officer for international and trade affairs, Dr Jorge Martin-Almagro, commented: "Following the detection of foot and mouth disease in EU countries resulting in a rising risk of introduction into Great Britain, we have extended restrictions on the personal imports of food products that pose a risk in FMD transmission." He added: "Robust contingency plans are already in place to manage the risk of this disease to protect farmers and Britain's food security. This biosecurity measure combined with all others we have implemented are critical to limit the risk of FMD incursion. I would urge livestock keepers to continue exercising the upmost vigilance for signs of disease, ensure scrupulous biosecurity is maintained and to report any suspicion of disease immediately to the Animal and Plant Health Agency." However, there are still certain exemptions to these regulations. Small quantities of baby formula, medicinal foods and specific composite items such as chocolate, sweets, bread, cakes, biscuits and pasta are still permitted.

Doctor warns 'death will come soon' to anyone spotting one specific symptom

Our community members are treated to special offers, promotions and adverts from us and our partners. You can check out at any time. More info A specialist in palliative care, Kathryn Mannix, has offered a powerful perspective on death, providing insights into what may be a prominent sign that someone is nearing their final moments. Dr Mannix, who merges her expertise as a clinician and author with her advocacy work for Hospice UK, promotes an open conversation about dying, calling it 'a natural process'. Dr Kathryn, a key figure in Hospice UK's Dying Matters campaign and contributor to the eye-opening BBC piece 'Dying is not as bad as you think', advocates candid discussions about mortality across different platforms. During such conversations, she often points to particular signs indicating when a patient may be approaching the end of their life. Urging for a rediscovery of 'the wisdom' in discussing the last phases of life, Dr Kathryn aims to break down the stigmas surrounding death. READ MORE - Kate Middleton has the same breakfast every day to keep herself feeling healthy READ MORE - ITV Good Morning Britain star reveals painful health battle live on air The Express reports on Dying Matters, an initiative by Hospice UK which strives to produce educational materials and encourages a culture where talks of death, bereavement, and the dying process are standardised. Hospice UK has released a video with Dr Kathryn which sheds light on a key indicator of impending death, reports the Mirror. Dr Kathryn has shared her view that 'dying is probably not as bad as you're expecting', offering reassurance and guidance regarding the dying process. She details this in the Hospice UK video, explaining: "As time goes by people sleep more, and they're awake less. "Instead of just being asleep, this person has temporarily become unconscious, we can't wake them up." Dr. Kathryn described the moment of passing as follows: "At the very end of somebody's life, there will be a period of shallow breathing and then one out breath that just isn't followed by another in breath." She explained that this marks the transition from consciousness to a comatose state, rather than simply sleep. The physician also addressed the 'death rattle', a phenomenon that often precedes the final breath. She clarified that this sound is an indicator of profound tranquillity as the individual approaches death. Dr. Kathryn stressed that the 'death rattle' should not be viewed negatively, but rather as a serene aspect of the dying process. She explained that the rattling noise occurs when the person becomes completely unconscious and peaceful, as they continue to breathe but lose the ability to clear their throat. According to Dr. Kathryn, the accumulation of mucus and saliva in the back of the throat causes the characteristic rattling noise as the individual breathes. She described the final breath as potentially 'so gentle' that loved ones present may not immediately realise the person has passed away. Dr. Kathryn highlighted the importance of understanding and appreciating this natural part of life, as well as comforting one another in times of bereavement. Dr Kathryn voiced her desire for society to recognise and accept the inherent process of dying – a common characteristic shared amongst all humanity.

ITV Good Morning Britain segment pulled off air as Ranvir Singh forced to stop sweary report

ITV GMB's Ranvir Singh had to step in and cut the report. ITV Good Morning Britain had to cut one of its live reports today after explicit language could be heard in the background. During Ranvir Singh's news segment she was joined by the North America correspondent Noel Phillips, who was discussing the national guard troops in LA for the ICE protests. However in the background of the reports, the protestors in LA were heard using a number of explicit words as Donald Trump sends another 2,000 National Guards and 700 Marines to LA on the fourth day of unrest, writes The Mirror. ‌ ‌ As the report rolled, it was quickly cut as Ranvir stepped in saying: "I'm just going to interrupt that - I think we could hear some profanities being spoken. That's my understanding of what's going on there near Noel and we can't really broadcast that at quarter past eight in the morning. We're going to try to get back to him." Fans took to social media to talk about the on air mishap, one fan penned: "Who would think it be a good idea to be in the middle of the protesters that are angry…" The moment comes after Noel opened up about being shot with a rubber bullet while covering the chaos live from Los Angeles on Monday, leading to his need for medical treatment. Susanna asked Noel about the incident, she said: "You found yourself in the line of fire yesterday, didn't you? Just before your report at eight o'clock. "We had no idea at the time. We've seen a number of reporters, in fact you reported on one yesterday morning of a photographer who had been hit, what happened to you?" ‌ Speaking about the incident, Noel said: "Susanna and Richard, just 10 minutes before coming on air yesterday, I was on the floor talking to several protesters. I was on the floor because it was the best place to be, given the fact that the situation around us was so volatile, officers were obviously chasing protestors on the streets." He further described the moment of impact, saying: "As I was laying on the floor, I felt as though an enormous ton of bricks had fallen on my arm. I realised, within about 20 to 30 seconds, that a rubber bullet had grazed the top layer of my skin and had caused a bit of injury. "My arm was swollen, I went to the doctors, got it checked out, it wasn't broken at all. But, it was swollen, it still is swollen and it's in a bandage at the moment. "It's pretty surreal to be hit, but relieved as it could have been worse. These rubber bullets are less lethal than a bullet but they can kill you or seriously injury you." Peppa Pig announces gender of Mummy Pig's new baby in epic reveal

Peppa Pig fans are in for some exciting news today as the gender of Mummy Pig's new baby will 'swineally' be revealed to the world. The smash hit UK cartoon caused a stir across the globe earlier this year when it was announced that the fictional pig family were expecting a new addition to their brood. There was a huge fanfare and even an interview with Peppa and Mummy Pig on ITV Good Morning Britain back in February to let fans know the happy update from the world of Peppa Pig. Though some viewers were left rather disgruntled by the light-hearted stunt, with some branding it a "joke" and threatening to switch off. One such unhappy viewer said: "Turning off... this programme is becoming a joke," while another questioned the necessity of such an unusual moment: "Wtf is the point of this cringeworthy Peppa Pig interview?". Confusion spread as one fan then questioned: "Am I tripping? Why are they interviewing Peppa Pig?" while another labelled the content as sheer madness: "This segment is bonkers." But as the sun sets on this Friday, a huge spectacle in London will herald the latest baby news from 'Peppatown' as Battersea Power Station chimneys will light up in celebration of the gender reveal. And the colour? It'll be pink! as the "It's A Girl!" moment kicks off following a night of colour-changing lights between pink and blue to build anticipation. The event kicked off at 2pm today, at the world's first ever-permanent Peppa Pig store, which is situated inside the famous power station. It'll feature baby-themed fun, character appearances, cupcakes, and fundraising in support of National Children's Trust (NCT) the UK's leading charity for pregnancy and parents. There will also be a donation point at the till for Battersea store, where consumers can donate to the great cause, with more exciting activities for NCT coming soon to the Peppa store. Everyone is invited to come down and watch the exciting reveal, alongside join the gender reveal party earlier in the day, but if a quick trip to the capital is out of the cards as a last minute plan on a Friday afternoon, then fear not, there are lots of 'pig' things awaiting fans. Peppa Pig kicks off a whole new era with the arrival of the new member of the clan, including Peppa Meets the Baby, a brand-new cinema experience launching on May 30 in over 2,600 cinemas across 19 countries. This hour-long, song-filled screening features 10 brand-new episodes, as Peppa and George prepare for the arrival of their baby sister. In addition, the gender reveal episode will air on YouTube on May 3 as part of the Peppa Pig Tales series. It's the beginning of a brand-new chapter for Peppa – and the biggest shake-up in the show's 20-year history .
