With Ballerina (2025) starring Ana de Armas and from the world of John Wick having arrived in theaters Friday, many may be wondering about the films that precede this latest installment and where to watch them. "John Wick" is the one movie franchise beloved by action movie nerds and dog lovers alike. It seems like the original film has been around for much longer than 11 years, given the influence it's had on Hollywood, from those awesome "gun fu" stunt sequences to Keanu Reeves' movie star revival. The scrappy indie thriller cast Reeves as an ex-hitman who puts retirement on hold for a righteous revenge mission, and since then there have been three more "Wick" flicks, a prequel TV series and now a new cinematic spinoff. "Ballerina" features Ana de Armas as a dancer/assassin raised in the same criminal organization that unleashed Wick. 'John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum' (2019) Excommunicated from his assassin's guild and with a $14 million bounty on his head, courtesy of the all-powerful High Table, John gets into nasty blade-throwing brawls and even rides a horse through New York to escape a city full of secret killers. He makes his way to Morocco, seeking help from friend and fellow dog lover Sofia (Halle Berry), and winds up back in the Big Apple for a climactic throwdown with martial-arts master Zero (Mark Dacascos). The operatic action and intriguing exposition is there, but this solid third installment winds up a good but not great effort, owing to a convoluted last act and underdeveloped supporting characters. 4. 'Ballerina' (2025) Although Wick is a master of various weaponry, Eve Macarro (Ana de Armas) is down to use everything but the kitchen sink. (And probably would use that if a sink was just hanging out somewhere.) A rookie assassin, Eve goes rogue from her crime family to track down the cult who murdered her father. Her path of vengeance includes an amazing flamethrower shootout and a brawl involving dinner plates as she makes new friends and enemies, plus faces off with Wick himself. It's a spinoff movie that both feels like a "John Wick" noir thriller as well as something interestingly original. 3. 'John Wick: Chapter 4' (2023) In this very globetrotting installment, Wick's had enough and goes on the offensive against the High Table. The Marquis (Bill Skarsgård), a sadistic new antagonist, sends Wick's old friend, blind martial-arts master Caine (Donnie Yen), after him and their tussle lands both in a finale for all the marbles in Paris. The fourth "Wick" is the best in terms of sheer jaw-dropping action sequences. The festival of bangers includes a waterfall-filled throwdown in a German nightclub, a "doll house" fight seen from overhead where Wick lights people up with fire bullets, and a most excellent and electrifying traffic jam at the Arc de Triomphe. 2. 'John Wick' (2014) The first "Wick" is high up for any fan, either for the sheer action-movie chutzpah or the fact that it's the one where the bad guys kill a puppy. And especially because they murdered the adorable last gift given to John by his late wife, it's completely understandable why he'd re-enter the fray he worked to get out of and just wreck a whole bunch of enemies. We would, too, Johnny! Willem Dafoe and John Leguizamo are the recognizable faces, Reeves turns in a terrific performance as our hero hunts down the canine-murdering culprit – a Russian crime boss' son (Alfie Allen) – and the legend of the relatable hard-luck assassin begins in memorable fashion. 1. 'John Wick: Chapter 2' (2017) As good as the first movie was, "Chapter 2" packs in all the great stunts and jaw-dropping gunfights but is really where the rules and mythology of John's world begin to fill out and become this epic story. For one, viewers learn more about the High Table, the assassin hotel The Continental and John's long history in it. Wick is forced to fulfill a blood oath "marker" held by underworld boss Santino D'Antonio (Riccardo Scamarcio), the man who helped him retire, and much chaotic ruckus ensues as Wick returns full bore into this dangerous world. John winds up murdering the guy on Continental grounds – a huge no-no – and sets the stage for him being a wanted man through two more movies.

Movie Review: FROM THE WORLD OF JOHN WICK: BALLERINA
Sequels are hard. Franchises are even harder. Friends, yours truly continues to be a card-carrying John Wick: Chapter 4 fan. However, I am decidedly not a fan of needless sequels. Over the course of the last year, though, we've seen Hollywood really start testing out the Wick Universe. Just how far will this dark, chaotic and violent world stretch? Well, From the World of John Wick: Ballerina aims to test that. Will the frenetic stunt spectacular land a solid punch? Or will the fireworks fail to spark? Read on. From the World of John Wick: Ballerina A young woman (Ana de Armas), after growing up in the Ruska Roma ballet school, strikes out on her own as an assassin. With her newfound freedom, she is solely focused on avenging her father's murder. However, she soon finds herself entangled with a super-secret cult of murderers. Will she be able to come out on top? Ian McShane, Angelica Huston, Gabriel Byrne, Norman Reedus and Lance Reddick co-star in the movie. Len Wiseman directs From the World of John Wick: Ballerina from a script by Shay Hatten. From the World of John Wick: Ballerina is a beast of a title, but boy, oh, boy. I must bow to the Wick creative team for continually finding a way to keep the franchise feeling not only fresh but innovative. Five films in, most franchises are starting to feel … a little dusty. Not John Wick , it seems, though. RELATED: Final Destination: Bloodlines Spoiler Review Wiseman and his creative team step into large shoes. Chad Stahelski helmed the first four films and played a vital role in crafting this world. Kids, you wouldn't even know Stahelski wasn't behind the camera. From the World of John Wick: Ballerina captures the same quick pacing in this magnificent, fluorescent, breakneck universe. Wiseman, for those who might not remember, cut his teeth directing the Underworld franchise beginning with the first film in 2003, so he knows his way around a stunt. It shouldn't come as a surprise, but Ana de Armas slays (pun intended) as Eve, the once lost little girl coming into her own. She's by herself for long stretches of time, but her intense physicality and an occasionally winking charisma allow her to easily carry the story. De Armas, however, is particularly at ease with the stunt work, which, like any John Wick film, is always formidable. This franchise's ability to develop on its stunts with each passing movie is a thing of beauty. Nothing is repeated. While John Wick had to spend the fourth film fighting his way through Paris, Eve must work her way through a quaint little village in the Alps, where apparently everyone is an assassin. Everything can be used as a weapon: katanas, hand grenades, dinner plates … fingers. There were plenty of shocked scoffs in the theater thanks to the pace and ferocity of the film's violence. This film is a hoot with an audience. RELATED: Bring Her Back Spoiler Review At the same time, the movie's dynamic supporting players will feel immediately comfortable to everyone familiar with the John Wick franchise. Ian McShane, of course, dominates when he's on screen. Any elder millennial will tell you, with far too much glee, that Angelica Huston is a queen. However, From the World of John Wick: Ballerina also reminded yours truly of one thing. We don't deserve Gabriel Byrne, who cuts a menacing figure as The Chancellor. Friends, From the World of John Wick: Ballerina is a rarity. It might be the fifth film in the franchise, but it's also just as fun as the first. The seamless melding of inventive stunts, magnetic world-building and a colorful cast of supporting characters shoulder the load easily. This is an effortlessly gritty stunt spectacular and a must-see for John Wick fans the world over. From the World of John Wick: Ballerina opens in theaters on June 6, 2025. How Big Is Keanu Reeves' John Wick Role In Ana De Armas' ‘Ballerina'?

Keanu Reeves reprises John Wick opposite Ana de Armas in From the World of John Wick: Ballerina, but how much is he actually in the movie? Reeves, of course, has starred in four films in the crime thriller franchise, beginning with John Wick in 2014, followed by the sequels John Wick: Chapter 2 in 2017, John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum in 2019 and John Wick: Chapter 4 in 2023. The 2023 film appeared to be Reeves' last because of his character's "death" at the conclusion, but its studio Lionsgate and creatives announced at CinemaCon in April that Reeves' dog-avenging assassin would be returning for a fifth John Wick movie. Formally titled From the World of John Wick: Ballerina, the John Wick franchise prequel movie opens in theaters everywhere on Friday. The summary for the movie reads, 'Taking place during the events of John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, the film follows Eve Macarro (Armas) who is beginning her training in the assassin traditions of the Ruska Roma.' Ballerina also features the return of some key characters from earlier films in the John Wick franchise, including Winston (Ian McShane), The Director (Anjelica Huston) and Charon (the late Lance Reddick). Rated R, Ballerina also introduces a slate of new characters to the franchise, including the vicious crime boss The Chancellor (Gabriel Byrne), the assassin Lena (Catalina Sandino Moreno) and a rogue hitman, Daniel Pine (Norman Reedus). Reeves plays Wick in a supporting capacity in Ballerina, but how pivotal is the character to the story and how much does he appear in the film? Note: The next section includes spoilers from 'Ballerina.' Producer Chad Stahelski — the director behind the first four John Wick films — director Len Wiseman and screenwriter Shay Hatten had a tricky balancing actor to pull off with From the World of John Wick: Ballerina. Not only did the creatives have to introduce a new character in the franchise to lead the narrative, they had to bring back Keanu Reeves' larger-than-life John Wick in a way that compliments the story yet does not overshadow Ana de Armas. The good news is, they succeed in bringing a proper balance to Ballerina but do it in a way for de Armas to make the film her own while not stepping on the John Wick series' legacy. Reeves doesn't show up in Ballerina until about 30 minutes into the film, where Wiseman cleverly restages a scene from John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum where Wick seeks refuge from his old ally The Director in her theater. In the original film, there's a scene where The Director and her bodyguards are walking down a set of stairs in the theaters, where Anjelica Huston's character questions why Wick's path of revenge was 'over a puppy.' In Ballerina, though, the sequence takes place from Eve's vantage point, and she eventually crosses paths with Wick for a brief conversation about escaping the life of an assassin. In total, the sequence on the stairs and Eve and Wick's encounter lasts around two minutes. The crux of Ballerina is Eve's path of revenge, where she seeks The Chancellor and his assassins to pay for the death of her father, Javier (David Castañeda). The Chancellor, as it turns out, is not only Javier's father-in-law, but Eve's (Victoria Comte) grandfather, and he wants to kidnap the young girl to ensure she will be able to carry on his crime organization's bloodline when she becomes an adult. The problem is, The Director fears Eve's revenge will begin a war between the Roma Ruska and the vicious cult of assassins, so she sends John Wick to the ballerina's location to eliminate the potential of that happening. As such, Wick returns about an hour after his initial scene in Ballerina, where he — without giving away any major spoilers — locates and tries to neutralize Eve in a secret location of The Chancellor's group. The sequence, while full of hyperkinetic action, again only lasts a couple of minutes. From there, Wick remains on the grounds of The Chancellor's compound — which essentially is a seemingly quaint Austrian town — while Eve continues her path of revenge. Wick remerges about 15 minutes after his last appearance as Eve finds herself in a do-or-die situation, only to disappear again near the conclusion of the movie. All told, Reeves appears as Wick in Ballerina for about 10 minutes at best, but thankfully, the character's appearance is not reduced to a set of walk-on cameos. In fact, Wick has such a looming presence in the last half-hour of Ballerina that the role feels bigger than it actually is. Smartly, Chad Stahelski, Len Wiseman Shay Hatten allow Ana de Armas ample room to establish a presence for Eve in the world of John Wick that's just as indomitable as Reeves'. Wherever Eve ends up — whether it be in another Ballerina prequel film or John Wick 5, de Armas has definitely earned her place at the (high) table. John Wick 5 Release Date Window, Cast, Plot & Things We Know
After the success of the previous four John Wick movies, fans were eager for John Wick 5. There is one slight problem, however. John is dead, and director Chad Stahelski and the crew are still trying to figure out how to bring Keanu Reeves' iconic character back without altering the events that have already taken place. While John Wick 5 was seemingly confirmed, Chad Stahelski's latest interview with The Hollywood Reporter suggests that there are issues that still need to be addressed. Speaking to the publication, Stahelksi revealed they were still unsure of the story or how to incorporate John Wick in the proposed fifth film. This problem arises because John's story ended with the fourth film. 'I'm not going to lie to you, it's a bit of a conundrum. Me and Mike Finch — the writer on 4 who's also writing 5 — we've got a pretty good story that I think is cool. Once we have a 50-page book, and if we're feeling it, we'll sit with Keanu and shape this thing,' said the director in the interview. So if John Wick 5 does come out, fans should not expect it very soon. Stahelski is also working on Highlander with Henry Cavill, which means that the John Wick movie's release date could be pushed to 2027 or, more realistically, 2028. As the film is still in the writing stages, there is no update on John Wick 5's casting. Of course, Keanu Reeves will return, and the filmmakers also expect other cast members, like Ian McShane, to join him. The film could add Ana de Armas' character, as she is now part of the universe. Fans speculate that characters like Caine (Donnie Yen) or Sofia (Halle Berry) could return. If the film moves forward, more details about the cast will be available. The primary issue of John Wick 5's plot is how to bring the protagonist back from the dead. It would have to take either of the two paths for this. The creators can set it before the events of John Wick 4, perhaps between two earlier films. If that does not happen, the fifth film will have to address John's fate. It will need to show how he possibly faked his death to escape the clutches of the High Table. Anyhow, it will also contain more villains and a lot more action.
