Waitrose to make huge loyalty scheme change this week that will leave shoppers divided
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) WAITROSE is making a huge change to its loyalty scheme as it adds a new perk but shoppers will be divided. The supermarket is offering shoppers the chance to borrow a reusable coffee cup so they can redeem their free coffee when shopping as part of a new trial. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 1 Waitrose has made a huge change to its loyalty scheme Credit: Getty Shoppers will have seven days to return the cup to a designated collection point or they will be charged a £3 penalty. The trial will reduce plastic waste as part of a 'circular' system. The scheme will be available in nine branches before it can be rolled out more widely. It is understood that its store in Newark is one of the shops taking part in the trial. To 'Borrow a Free Cup' shoppers will need to tap their MyWaitrose card. They can then fill the cup from Waitrose's hot drinks machine as usual. A Waitrose spokesperson said: 'We're currently conducting a reusable cup trial in nine of our branches - it kicked off this week and is available for MyWaitrose members to use when redeeming their free coffee, or for our cafe customers to use if purchasing one.' Shoppers who bring their own cup will still be able to claim their free coffee. The only requirement for the reusable cups is that they fit under the nozzle of the self-service coffee machine. What other changes has Waitrose made in store? The move is the latest update to the supermarket's free hot drink offer after it changed its free coffee terms and conditions in January. Shopper reveals the 'best time' to hit Waitrose for yellow sticker bargains, as she bags strawberries and milk for 69p Previously the posh supermarket only offered the free drink to shoppers who bought something in store first. This is the same rule as was initially brought in when the deal was first launched in 2013. Shoppers still needed to bring a reusable cup in order to bag the freebie. Waitrose brought back the free coffee perk in October 2022 after it was axed in 2017 to cut costs. Supermarket loyalty schemes - which has one? Supermarket staff handed out cups to customers after they had paid for their shopping and there was no minimum spend. The move left some members fuming while others criticised it and pointed out that you could buy a small item, such as a banana, to get the free drink. Last August Waitrose trialled recyclable disposable coffee cups in ten of its stores. It originally removed disposable cups from its stores in 2018 to reduce waste. The change meant that only shoppers who brought their own cup could claim their free coffee. Do you have a money problem that needs sorting? The chocolate bar is only available in store at Morrisons but is also currently sold on Amazon for £69.99. This is not the first time that the giant chocolate bar has been released to the public as it was previously stocked in 2017. Morrisons launched the enormous chocolate bar for Black Friday in 2017 as they released supersized items for the period. The supermarket is replicating the same trick this year for Father's Day as they sell more big items alongside the Toblerone. A limited edition footlong sausage roll, baked fresh in store everyday, will also be available for just £2 until June 15. Alongside the supersized Toblerone and sausage roll Morrisons have a Father's Day range of indulgent bakery sweet treats, corking deals on beer and ale, and further gifts and cards. 3 Customers with a More Card can purchase the bar for £60 Credit: Morrisons 3 Morrisons have come under fire for running out of promised customer rewards Credit: Getty This announcement follows public outrage at the supermarket after they encouraged customers to spend more but then ran out of promised rewards. The retail giant introduced a special offer in February offering free or discounted luxury kitchen essentials in exchange for spending certain amounts. Customers earn one More Card stamp for each £10 spent in-store. Supermarket loyalty schemes - which has one? The supermarket says the update is a direct response to customer feedback, after many asked for more ways to collect rewards. Kate Lavery, Loyalty Director, Morrisons, said: "We're always looking for ways to make the loyalty scheme even more rewarding. The best loyalty schemes revealed & how to get freebies "More Partner Points means our customers can now collect More Points on their everyday purchases beyond the weekly shop - whether they're buying clothes, gifts, or booking a holiday. If you're not signed up already, it's free to join – and could help you earn money off your shop faster than ever. Elsewhere, the supermarket giant recently removed two of its popular food offers - leaving customers missing their weekend discounts. Advertisement Fish Fridays and Steak Saturdays have for years given customers with More Cards 20% off fish and steak from the stores' Market Street counters. But the supermarket recently removed the offers as it says customers wanted value all week-long, not just certain days of the week. Loyalty scheme changes at other retailers Earlier this year, Tesco made a major change to its Clubcard scheme , to the delight of pizza lovers. Customers were able to exchange their points for money off drinks and food at PizzaExpress until the end of April. Advertisement Any Clubcard points exchanged for money off at Pizza Express were worth double, so a £1.50 voucher would have saved you £3. Sainsbury's also made a huge change to its Nectar loyalty scheme for 18 million customers. The UK's second biggest grocery store introduced a new security feature on its loyalty card app to prevent points from being stolen. The free scheme allows customers to earn one Nectar point for every £1 spent at Sainsbury's, both in-store and online. Advertisement

Over 60s urged to take advantage of little-known freebies and discounts
Our community members are treated to special offers, promotions and adverts from us and our partners. You can check out at any time. More info Anyone over 60 is being urged to take advantage of a host of little-known freebies and discounts you may already be missing out on. While some may think the bargains begin rolling in once you are officially of pension age, 66, there are actually eight main offers you should be thinking about before then. Prescription medication is free for anyone who is 60 or over, and all you have to do to start receiving your medical items for free is to inform the chemist at the till and complete the back of the prescription, according to Lancs Live. Proof of age may be needed to show the pharmacist you are of the correct age, but this tip is worth noting as paying for a prescription can set you back around £9.90 each time. READ MORE: State pensioners warned as key DWP payment rises could take 'six to eight months' And in a similar vein to free prescriptions, eye tests also become free on your 60th birthday. This change could save you between £20 and £100 dependent on the optician you visit, and it is advised to bring your identification with you in case you are questioned about your age. Unfortunately, you do not automatically receive financial aid with the price of glasses, but there are certain opticians who may do discounts. For example, Specsavers offers those over 60 to snag 20 per cent off if a pair of glasses is bought from the £70 range or above. This handing saving applies to frames, lenses and any other add-ons, such as lens protection treatments or sun protection. Another bonus of celebrating your 60th year around the sun is discounted rail travel. By applying for a Senior Railcard, anyone aged 60 or over can enjoy a third off all Standard and First Class tickets on Anytime, Off-Peak and Advance fares. The railcard can be used at almost any time during the year, including on weekends and public holidays. However, it is advised those with the railcard avoid travelling at Peak times, Monday to Friday, when when journeys are made entirely within the London and South East Network Railcard area, as these are not included. The Senior Railcard website includes more information on travel conditions. Public transport rights also extend to bus passes when you turn 60. Many UK residents qualify for free bus travel at 60, but this heavily depends on where you live. READ MORE: State pension warning as key date for 'people working longer' arrives For example, residents in Wales and those living in London (travelling within the city) can get one at 60. According to Transport for West Midlands, when you receive your bus pass corresponds to the age you qualify for a pension. In addition to public transport hacks, shops like Iceland also do a deal for those who have turned 60. A 10 per cent discount is offered every Tuesday at stores across the country, but customers must have an Iceland Bonus Card and may need to show proof of their age such as a senior bus pass, driving licence or Senior Railcard. Boots also offers an over 60s reward programme shoppers are advised to get involved with as this membership can lead to invites to exclusive events, and extra points at services such as Boots Hearingcare. Finally, for those looking to spend some time relaxing at the cinema, some cinemas offer discount programmes for individuals over 60. Odeon's Silver Cinema Club offers discount tickets, at just £3.50 for entry, with special film screenings during quieter times aimed at more mature audiences. Perks such as free tea, coffee and biscuits before the film starts are also included in the small fee.
