One CoBRA commando killed in encounter on Sukma-Bijapur border

A jawan of the specialised Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA) of the Central Reserve Police Force was killed in an encounter with the outlawed Communist Party of India (Maoists) Thursday morning on the border of Bijapur and Sukma in Chhattisgarh, officials said. A Maoist was killed in the encounter. The encounter broke out between 10 am and 11 am in Tumrel, an area that falls in Bijapur district close to Sukma border, after security forces received intelligence reports on the presence of Maoists in the area. A joint operation was then undertaken by Sukma District Reserve Guard (DRG), Special Task Force (STF) and Central Reserve Police Force's elite force CoBRA battalion 210. Significantly, this operation comes at a time when the state is making a massive anti-insurgency push in an attempt to meet the March 26 deadline set by Union Home Minister Amit Shah to root out Left-Wing Extremism. It also comes a day after 27 Maoists were killed in a major encounter in the state's Abujhmad – an area located largely in Narayanpur district but also extends into Bijapur, Dantewada and Kanker in Chhattisgarh's Bastar region, and Bhamragarh in Maharashtra's Gadchiroli district. Among the significant casualties in that operation was Nambala Keshava Rao alias Basava Raju, the 70-year-old chief of CPI (Maoist). It also comes days after the security forces called off a major anti-insurgency operation codenamed 'Operation Black Forest' on Karegutta Hills on the Chhattisgarh-Telangana border. Security forces have hailed the operation as a success, claiming that it has broken up the Maoists dreaded Battalion 1 of its armed People's Liberation Guerrilla Army (PLGA). Another CoBRA jawan who was injured in Thursday's encounter is currently being evacuated using a chopper, police said. 'During the encounter, a Maoist was gunned down. Unfortunately, one of our jawans suffered a bullet wound and succumbed,' one official said. This is the third jawan to have lost his life in Naxal violence in the state in the last two days, taking the total toll of jawans killed this year to 17. On Wednesday, two DRG jawans were killed in separate Improvised Explosive Device (IED) blasts during the Abujhmad operation. The latest development takes the total number of Maoists killed in Chhattisgarh in 201, of which 184 were in Bastar region alone.

Pakistan: Car bomb targets Frontier Corps, leaves several people dead in Balochistan

Pakistan's southwest Quetta city. (File image/Xinhua/Asad/IANS) Quetta: A car bomb explosion in Gulistan Area of Qila Abdullah, a border area of Pakistan's Balochistan province with Afghanistan, has killed at least four people and injured more than 20 others, eight of them critically injured. The explosion occurred in Jabbar commercial market situated on the Quetta–Chaman National Highway in Gulistan town, adjacent to the fort of Pakistan's Frontier Corps (FC). As per details, the massive explosion destroyed many shops and vehicles parked in the area and walls of the FC Fort were also damaged. Locals said that many shops in the market also caught fire. Sources stated that the target of the attack was also a tribal warlord Faizullah Ghabizai, a pro-government leader, who was present in the market when the car bomb exploded. However, Ghabizai remained safe while one of his guards was killed and others were injured in the explosion. 'Apparently, the attackers wanted to target the back wall of the FC fort located adjacent to the commercial market. After the huge blast, security forces engaged in heavy exchange of fire with the attackers,' said Muhammad Riaz Dawar, Deputy Commissioner Qila Abdullah. 'An Improvised Explosive Device (IED) was fitted in the car and was used for the explosion. It seems like the car was detonated with a remote control,' he added. The banned terror outfit, Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) claimed responsibility for the attack on the FC Fort and the levies are investigating into the incident while security in and around Qila Abdullah and Chaman has been beefed up. Analysts say that there is a clear coordination between the proscribed Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) and the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), who have intensified their attacks in the recent past. 'TTP footprints deep inside Balochistan re-establish the fact that both TTP and the BLA are in allegiance and operating in coordination against the Pakistani security forces. We also have seen the other separatist groups in Sindh province – including the Sindh Desh Revolution Army which has connections with the BLA and TTP – starting to carry out targetted killings in areas bordered with India,' said analyst Qamar Cheema. 'Pakistan has repeatedly stated that these militant groups are getting all the support and facilitation from Afghanistan,' he added. The Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) has intensified its attacks on security forces in the province. Social media campaigns have also been launched by the BLA-led groups, calling for what they term as liberation from Pakistan and expressing allegiance with India.

Pakistan continues using Chinese drones to drop narcotics and arms along Punjab border, BSF data shows

Despite a heightened vigil both on land and in the air along the western border after India and Pakistan announced a cessation of military operations on May 10, Pakistan continued to drop narcotics and arms into India with the help of Chinese drones, recoveries made by the Border Security Force (BSF) and Punjab Police show. On May 10, before the cessation of operations was announced in the evening, the BSF, based on specific information, recovered a yellow packet adjacent to Sheikh Bhatti village in the Amritsar district of Punjab, bordering Pakistan. The packet had an improvised metal wire loop attached to it, indicating it was dropped by a drone, a BSF official said. The packet contained 2.7 kilograms of high-grade explosive, two hand grenades with accessories, two pistols, four magazines, 30 live rounds of ammunition, two detonators, and an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) circuit. 'Despite the heightened situation on the border, the arms syndicate across the border has not stopped its malicious designs to push weapons onto Indian soil,' the BSF official said. On May 11, amid blackouts, when several areas in Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Rajasthan, and Gujarat were reportedly swarmed with armed drones from Pakistan despite the pause on military operations, the BSF recovered a 'DJI Mavic 3 Classic' drone from a field adjacent to Gola Dola village of Gurdaspur in Punjab, and another drone of the same make along with a pistol in Kahangarh village. The same day, BSF personnel recovered 559 grams of heroin from a farming field near Rajatal village in Amritsar district. On May 12, around 11:20 a.m., the BSF recovered another Chinese-made drone in a broken condition from a field near Nishoke village in Amritsar. Subsequently, on May 14, the BSF recovered a pistol, a drone, and a packet of heroin in three different incidents in Amritsar, Ferozepur, and Gurdaspur along the Punjab border. On May 15, the BSF recovered another 'DJI Mavic 3 Classic' drone from Tarn Taran in Punjab. 'The drone is presumed to have fallen due to technical interference of electronic countermeasures deployed on the border,' the BSF said. Overnight on May 15-16, BSF troops observed suspicious activity in the Ferozepur border area and, on inspection, recovered a 'DJI Mavic 3 Classic' drone along with a pistol and two magazines from a farming field adjacent to Kalash village in Tarn Taran district. In 2024, the BSF seized 294 drones along the Punjab border, double the figure from the previous year.
