Our ties with US have weathered many transitions and challenges: India on Trump's criticism
New Delhi, Aug 1 (UNI) India today appeared to brush aside US President Donald Trump's use of strong language against India, saying the partnership has weathered several transitions and challenges, and expressed confidence that the bilateral relationship will continue to progress. Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, answering a barrage of questions on President Trump's negative comments, especially terming India as a 'dead economy', said: 'India and the United States share a comprehensive global strategic partnership anchored in shared interests, democratic values, and robust people-to-people ties. 'This partnership has weathered several transitions and challenges. We remain focused on the substantive agenda that our two countries have committed to and are confident that the relationship will continue to move forward.' On Thursday, President Trump had said that India and Russia could 'take their dead economies down together', hours after announcing that he would levy 25% tariffs on Indian imports from Friday, August 1. Countering the US President's statement, Commerce and Industries Minister Piyush Goyal said yesterday that India is seen as an economic 'bright spot' in the world 'All things not good', Trump wrote on Truth Social, adding that India would be paying a tariff of 25% from August 1, plus a penalty for buying military hardware and energy from Russia. Trump had also said that the U.S. and India 'don't do a lot of trade'. In 2024, India and the U.S. conducted trade in goods and services worth $186 billion, with a surplus of $41 billion in India's favour The MEA spokesperson said they have taken note of Trump's announcement of a 25 percent tariff on Indian goods, adding that the government is studying and reviewing the move. He also chose not to respond to the U.S. President's taunt about Pakistan potentially selling oil to India. 'We have nothing to say,' the spokesperson said. India also stood by its decision to purchase oil from Russia, with the spokesperson saying that India's choices are guided by the prevailing global scenario and the best available deals in the market to secure the country's energy needs. "Our ties with any country stand on their own merit and should not be seen through the prism of a third country. As far as India-Russia relations are concerned, we have a steady and time-tested partnership," the spokesperson said. 'In securing our energy needs, we are guided by what is on offer in the markets and by the prevailing global circumstances,' he added. On India-US defence cooperation, Jaiswal highlighted the robust nature of India-U.S. defence ties, which he said have significantly deepened in recent years. "There is considerable potential for this partnership to expand further," he noted. 'We have a strong defence partnership with the U.S. which has been strengthening over the last several years. There is potential for this partnership to grow further under the India-U.S. COMPACT for the 21st century.' UNI RN
