Tesco brings back nostaglic 90s beer to stores after being discontinued over 20 years ago
This extremely popular bevy was well known for its bright red and yellow logo with two large D's. For those wanting to reminisce about the 90s, Brits can now do so with a cool drink in the garden this summer as Tesco has brought back a nostalgic beer that was extremely popular over 30 years ago. Two decades on since it was discontinued, the supermarket giant has brought Double Diamond back to UK stores. While the nostalgic drink returned to pubs last year as a pale ale, shoppers will now be able to pick up a pack of four 440ml bottles from Tesco for £5.75, or for £5 if shoppers are a clubcard member. First brewed in 1876 as an India Pale Ale, the popular 90s drink was widely recognised for its bright red and yellow with two large D's. Many people also memorised its famous slogan: "A Double Diamond works wonders." At its peak, over 50million pints of Double Diamond were sold in a single year, reports the Mirror. However, its popularity soon came to an end as the beer was discontinued in 2003. Tesco's version of Double Diamond has an ABV of 3.8 per cent and is made with a new recipe that features Citra, Colombus and Mosaic hops. Jamie Allsopp, re-founder of Allsopp and Sons, said: "Double Diamond is our A-list star. This sessionable Pale Ale is the next iteration of Double Diamond and we hope will find a place in the affections of new drinkers, as well as those that haven't tasted it in 30 years." Double Diamond made its return to the UK last year, with 12 pubs currently selling the pale ale. Unfortunately none of these establishments are in Scotland, but with Double Diamond returning to Tesco stores, Scots will once again have the chance to indulge in the beer. Allsopp and Sons announced the return of Double Diamond last year through their Instagram. With a picture that read "Only here for the beer", the caption said: "It's back, and it still works wonders! "After months of research and trialling recipes to make it perfect, we've relaunched Double Diamond. Revived as a 3.8% pale ale that drinks like a lager, it's a delicious, easy-going, sessionable draught beer, coming very soon to your favourite pubs!" Many fans raved in the comments, with one person writing: "Had some today absolutely delicious !!" Another Instagram user added: "I still remember the jingle!" A third commenter went as far as to quote the jingle, saying: "Double Diamond works wonders, works wonders, so drink one today." In other beer news, Manchester-based brewery Marble Beer has recently increased the alcohol level of their flagship pale ale following various complaints from customers. After new tax rules were introduced for alcohol products, the brewery decided to slash their alcohol by volume (ABV) from 3.9 per cent to 3.4 per cent. However, following grumbles from customers, Marble has now confirmed it has changed its mind and that their beer will go back to its original 3.9 per cent. The beer is available in cans, cask and keg formats. Since August 2023, how drinks in the UK are taxed has changed. Instead of being based on the categories of wine, beer, spirits and ciders, alcoholic beverages are now taxed based on their strength. This means drinks with an ABV below 3.5 per cent are taxed at a lower rate. As a result of this change, Marble wasn't the only brewery who decided to lower the alcohol content in some of its products this year. Originally, Grolsch Premium Pilsner had an ABV of five per cent. However, after its relaunch in 2020, it was slashed to four per cent by its parent firm Asahi. Nostalgic beer from the 90s returns to UK supermarkets after 30-year hiatus

You may also remember it from its famous slogan: "A Double Diamond works wonders." But sadly as its popularity waned, Double Diamond was discontinued in the 2000s. The version of Double Diamond in Tesco has an ABV of 3.8% and is made with a new recipe featuring Citra, Columbus and Mosaic hops. California beers named best in the world during international competition
Dozens of California breweries have received global recognition, with some of their products being named the best in the world. The 2025 World Beer Cup, an international competition organized by the not-for-profit Brewers Association, took place this past week in Indianapolis. Billing itself as the 'Olympics of Beer,' this year's competition was held over 14 sessions, spanning seven days with 256 judges from 37 different countries. Winners were announced May 1. 'The World Beer Cup competition continues to showcase the global industry's dedication to innovative craftsmanship, diverse flavors, and technical excellence,' said Chris Williams, World Beer Cup competition director. In total, 8,3715 beers from 1,761 breweries and cideries were entered into the World Beer Cup for consideration. The breweries came from all different corners of the globe, with 49 nations represented. At the end of the judging period, 349 awards were given out to beers in their respective categories, with three beers per category bestowed with the bronze, silver and gold awards. Among them, six breweries in the greater Los Angeles area, three in Orange and three in Los Angeles counties, received the prestigious gold awards for their beers. Anaheim-based Golden Road Brewing won for its Mango Cart in the Fruit Wheat Beer category, while fellow Anaheim brewery Brewery X claimed gold for Super Slap in the American-Style India Pale Ale category. Orange's Everywhere Brewery was awarded gold for Shifted Visions in the Juicy or Hazy India Pale Ale category. From Los Angeles, Arts District Brewing Co. earned top honors for Through The Roof in the International Pale Ale category; Claremont Craft Ales won Gold in the Experimental India Pale Ale category for its beer, Pepper & Peaches; and San Fernando Brewing Co. took Gold for Dr. Sleep in the Wood- and Barrel-Aged Beer category. Of the hundreds of beers to receive awards, 76 were brewed in the state of California, representing 55 unique breweries. The Best Beers In The World, According To The 2025 World Beer Cup

Often referred to as 'The Olympics of Beer Competitions,' the World Beer Cup is held annually, with the winners announced on the last evening of the annual Craft Brewers Conference, hosted by the Brewers Association. The Craft Brewers Conference and World Beer Cup Awards ceremony was hosted in Indianapolis, Indiana this year. Breweries from around the world sent representatives to attend the conference and the awards ceremony, hoping to return home with a medal from the world's most competitive beer awards—each of the 112 awards categories received an average of 73 entries. The beers are judged blind by a group of invited international judges, all of whom hold judging credentials or industry experience. This year, there 265 total judges, 132 of whom came from 37 international locations. Because of the quality of the judging and the large number of entries, winning a medal at the World Beer Cup is viewed as the ultimate affirmation of a beer's quality. Awards often result in increased sales for the brewery. The number of entries in each category are also used as indicators of trends in beer. The 2025 World Beer Cup, received 8,375 entries, from 1,761 producers representing 49 countries. In an informal meeting with beer-industry media, Bart Watson, president and CEO of the Brewers Association said that the number of entries was down from the number entered into the 2024 World Beer Cup reflecting the overall craft beer industry, which is seeing negative growth. But even as the industry was stagnant, some breweries were thriving, said Watson. This is reflected in 338 breweries entering the World Beer Cup for the first time. Also reflective of overall trends in the beer industry, the World Beer Cup added five categories of cider, which more breweries are branching into as they seek to diversify their offerings. As has been common in recent years, the most-entered categories were versions of IPA—Juicy or Hazy India Pale Ale received 290 entries, West Coast-Style India Pale Ale received 253 entries and American-Style India Pale Ale received 208 entries. But in recent years, more craft breweries have been making lager-style beers. German-Style Pilsener was the fourth-most entered category with 186 entries. And a relatively new beer style, Hoppy Lager, received 153 entries. CNA938 Rewind Play In 'Destination Anywhere' Melanie Oliveiro finds out where, in Singapore, listeners can go to visit the world's highest microbrewery in a building, as recognised by the Guinness World Records. It's at LeVeL33, the rooftop bar-restaurant located on the 33rd floor of Marina Bay Financial Centre Tower 1.
