Smoking Increases Risk Of Spinal Disc Damage, Doctors Warn
Shillong: Doctors at the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) here have warned that smoking significantly increases the risk of developing a slipped disc, also known as lumbar disc herniation. The warning came after a successful surgery was performed on a patient referred with recurrent lumbar disc herniation. A team led by surgeon Dr Bhaskar Borgohain recently carried out a tubular microdiscectomy successfully to relieve the pressure on the S1 nerve root on a patient admitted to the hospital. Four large fragments of the disc were removed during the minimally invasive procedure, he said. "Research suggests that smoking is one of the risk factors for slipped discs, possibly due to damage to collagen fibres in the disc's outer ring caused by toxic hydrocarbons in cigarette smoke," Dr Borgohain said. He added that such damage weakens the structure of the spinal discs, making them more prone to rupture or herniation, particularly in the lower back. Doctors at NEIGRIHMS have urged the public to avoid smoking not only to reduce the risk of spinal problems but also to improve overall musculoskeletal health.

Meghalaya honeymoon horror: Sohra tourist guide satisfied as police arrest suspects
Albert Pde, the guide at Mawlakhiat told PTI, 'I am happy that the criminals are finally behind the bars.' 'We stand vindicated. Those who tried to tarnish the image of Sohra and its people as violent have now been exposed,' said a visibly relieved Pde. The couple went missing on May 23 before Raja's highly decomposed body with fatal head injuries was found on June 2 near Weisawdong falls following which the bloodstained machete and other items were also recovered. Sohra (Meghalaya), June 10 (PTI) A local tourist guide who alerted police about the presence of three unidentified men accompanying newlyweds Raja and Sonam Raghuvanshi on the day they went missing last month on Tuesday said he is satisfied that his information helped crack the case. Pde had said he saw the couple accompanied by three male tourists as they were climbing over 3,000 steps from Nongriat to Mawlakhiat around 10 am on May 23. According to the guide, 'the four men, including Raja, were walking ahead while the woman was behind. The four men conversed in Hindi,' he said, admitting that he was not very conversant in the language. Pde had initially offered his services to walk them to Nongriat on May 22, but they politely refused and hired another guide identified as Bha Wansai, who dropped them at Shipara homestay. Police on Monday arrested Sonam, a 24-year-old woman from Indore, for allegedly orchestrating the murder of her husband Raja during their honeymoon in the scenic town of Sohra in Meghalaya. Raja was killed by men allegedly hired by Sonam, who went 'missing' and surfaced in UP's Ghazipur where she surrendered at the Nandganj police station after the arrest of three assailants — Akash Rajput (19), Vishal Singh Chauhan (22), and Raj Singh Kushwaha (21) — in overnight raids. The autopsy report of Raja Raghuvanshi indicated that he was hit twice with a sharp object on his head, officials at the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) said. 'The autopsy report indicated there were two sharp cuts on the head of the deceased — one from behind and one from the front,' East Khasi Hills district SP Vivek Syiem told PTI, quoting the report. He said police have also seen the two cuts on his head too during the inquest. According to the officer, police have also registered a murder case under Sohra PS, after initial inquest. Meghalaya honeymoon murder: How Raja Raghuvanshi, Sonam spent their last hours together
A week after Raja Raghuwanshi's body was found in a gorge in Sohra area near the Weisawdong Falls, Meghalaya police arrested his wife Sonam in connection with the murder. The couple from Indore, who had visited the state on their honeymoon, went missing on May 23. While the husband's body was recovered after being spotten by a drone on June 2, Sonam remained missing, with efforts to trace her continuing. She surrendered before police at Nandganj police station in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh. Meghalaya DGP I Nongrang said that apart from Sonam, three other persons had been arrested in overnight raids. 'The wife was allegedly involved in the Indore man's murder during honeymoon in Meghalaya. She had hired killers," she added. Nongrang added that the police probe was still on, with efforts underway to arrest other people who were involved in the crime. A day before the honeymoon couple went missing, Raja and Sonam Raghuvanshi had arrived at Mawlakhiat village in Meghalaya on May 22. The couple, who had rented a scooter, then visited Nongriat village where they trekked 3,000 steps down the gorge to see the famous living rootbridges, as per PTI. They stayed the night in a homestay in the village, and left the following morning on May 23. Raja's body was found 20 km from the homestay. Their rented scooter was found abandoned near a cafe the next day on May 24, on the road between Shillong to Sohra. Following this, police were informed of their disappearance and the initial search operation was launched with the help of the locals in the village. However, the rescue teams paused efforts on May 30 after heavy rainfall low visibility, with Sohra receiving around 500 mm of rainfall on May 29, 30 and 31, PTI quoted a weather department official as saying. After recovery, Raja's body was taken for post-mortem to the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences.

Missing Indore tourist's body found in Meghalaya gorge
'A police drone spotted the body in a deep gorge below the Weisawdong waterfall parking lot. The body was taken to the parking lot for a magisterial inquest in the evening,' a senior district official told PTI. Raja and his wife Sonam disappeared on May 23 hours after they checked out of a homestay at Nongriat village, 20 km from where his body was found, they said. Shillong, Jun 2 (PTI) The body of 29-year-old Raja Raghuvanshi was found in a deep gorge near a waterfall in Sohra area in Meghalaya's East Khasi Hills district on Monday, several days after the tourist from Indore and his wife had gone missing, officials said. He said the inquest was carried out in the presence of independent witnesses from the area. 'The relatives of the deceased identified the body as that of Raja Raghuvanshi through a distinctive tattoo on the deceased's right hand which read 'Raja',' he said. A woman's white shirt, a strip of medicine, a part of the LCD screen of a mobile phone and a smartwatch were also seized at the spot, the official said. The body was later taken to the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences for post-mortem examination. East Khasi Hills district Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem said a case of murder has been registered and a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed to probe the incident. Rescuers will continue to look for Raja's wife, Sonam, he said. Extremely heavy rainfall and low visibility had on May 30 stalled the search and rescue operations, which was launched by the police on May 24. Sohra area recorded the maximum amount of rainfall in the state on May 29, 30 and 31, recording around 500 mm of rainfall, equalling the annual rainfall record of Mysore, a Met official told PTI. Movement of traffic was also affected across the eastern Khasi and Jaintia Hills region with many places reporting landslides and flash floods that killed six persons and left over 10 people injured. The couple, hailing from Indore in Madhya Pradesh, arrived at Mawlakhiat village on May 22 on a rented scooter. They parked their scooter and trekked 3,000 steps down the gorge to visit the famous living rootbridges at Nongriat village, where they stayed the night and left the homestay the following morning. On May 24, their scooter was found abandoned at a cafe along the road from Shillong to Sohra following which the police were informed and by Sunday, the initial search operation was planned with the help of the local villagers, police said. Indore MPs — Shankar Lalwani and Sumer Singh Solanki — had held reviews of the rescue operations with Director General of Police I Nongrang and Chief Secretary DP Wahlang, expressing satisfaction over the efforts of the rescue teams. Earlier this year, a Hungarian tourist — Puskas Zsolt — went missing soon after he started his trek to the living rootbridge and he was found dead 12 days later. While the police have ruled out any foul play in his death, medical reports indicated he died due to a fall. PTI JOP ACD This report is auto-generated from PTI news service.
