Meghalaya honeymoon murder: How Raja Raghuvanshi, Sonam spent their last hours together
The couple from Indore, who had visited the state on their honeymoon, went missing on May 23.
While the husband's body was recovered after being spotten by a drone on June 2, Sonam remained missing, with efforts to trace her continuing. She surrendered before police at Nandganj police station in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh.
Meghalaya DGP I Nongrang said that apart from Sonam, three other persons had been arrested in overnight raids.
'The wife was allegedly involved in the Indore man's murder during honeymoon in Meghalaya. She had hired killers," she added. Nongrang added that the police probe was still on, with efforts underway to arrest other people who were involved in the crime.
A day before the honeymoon couple went missing, Raja and Sonam Raghuvanshi had arrived at Mawlakhiat village in Meghalaya on May 22.
The couple, who had rented a scooter, then visited Nongriat village where they trekked 3,000 steps down the gorge to see the famous living rootbridges, as per PTI. They stayed the night in a homestay in the village, and left the following morning on May 23. Raja's body was found 20 km from the homestay.
Their rented scooter was found abandoned near a cafe the next day on May 24, on the road between Shillong to Sohra. Following this, police were informed of their disappearance and the initial search operation was launched with the help of the locals in the village.
However, the rescue teams paused efforts on May 30 after heavy rainfall low visibility, with Sohra receiving around 500 mm of rainfall on May 29, 30 and 31, PTI quoted a weather department official as saying. After recovery, Raja's body was taken for post-mortem to the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences.

Actor Darshan arrested in Renukaswamy murder case after Supreme Court cancels his bail
Kannada actor Darshan Thogudeepa and actress Pavithra Gowda were arrested on Thursday after the Supreme Court cancelled their bail in the Renukaswamy murder case. Darshan was arrested at his wife Vijayalakshmi's house in Hosakerehalli in Bengaluru. The actor wanted to evade arrest and surrender in court, but the police got information about his stay and arrested him, reported PTI quoting sources. The SC observed that persons regardless of popularity are equal before the law. It directed the authorities to take Darshan and other accused into custody forthwith and ordered that the trial be conducted expeditiously. A Supreme Court bench of Justices JB Pardiwala and R Mahadevan quashed the interim bail granted to Darshan by the Karnataka High Court, stating that the bail was granted without adequate consideration of the witness intimidation and other illegalities. The Karnataka government had moved the top court against Darshan's bail order. In a reaction to Thursday's order, advocate DL Chidananda, representing the state government, said the SC stated that the Karnataka HC's decision did not follow the principles of granting bail. Chidananda told ANI: "The Supreme Court said that the High Court has not followed the principles of law which apply for granting bail. It also reiterated that the rule of law prevails in the country and, however influential an individual may be, they must be treated in accordance with the law." Pavithra Gowda, the prime accused in Renukaswamy murder case, was arrested from her house soon after the news broke that the bail of all the accused in the murder case was cancelled, according to news agency PTIciting police sources. Meanwhile, Karnataka Chief Minister's legal advisor, AS Ponnanna, said that granting Darshan bail would have hampered the investigation and trial. He said: "The state government and the prosecution agency were vindicated... It was the state government's decision that, in a case like this, where a serious offence has been registered, granting him bail would hamper the investigation and trial, as he is a powerful person. They did not want him to use his muscle to derail the prosecution's case." According to media reports, 33-year-old Renukaswamy, a fan of actor Darshan, had allegedly sent obscene messages to Gowda, which enraged Darshan, allegedly leading to his murder. His body was found near a stormwater drain next to an apartment in Sumanahalli in Bengaluru on June 9, 2024. Raghavendra, one of the accused who is part of Darshan's fan club in Chitradurga, had brought Renukaswamy to a shed in RR Nagar in Bengaluru, on the pretext that the actor wanted to meet him. It was in this shed that he was allegedly tortured and killed.

The case is about the abduction and murder of 33-year-old Renukaswamy, a fan of Darshan's who allegedly sent obscene messages to Gowda, Darshan's close friend, in 2024. Renukaswamy was reportedly angry with Gowda whom he held responsible for discord in Darshan's marriage at the time. While ruling the the trial be expedited, the SC pulled up the Karnataka high court for having granted the bail in December last year. That's when the SC also warned the state against any privileges in jail: 'However big a person may be, he cannot be above the law.' It warned the state officials: 'The day we know that the accused are provided with special or 5 star jail facilities, the first thing will be to put the jail superintendent under suspension.'

UP: Fatehpur administration impose restrictions, bans gatherings, protests
Last Updated: Kanpur (UP), Aug 14 (PTI) The Fatehpur district administration has imposed strict prohibitory orders banning all gatherings, processions, and protests in connection with a disputed mausoleum, officials said on Thursday. The move comes as authorities act on intelligence inputs of a planned mobilization on August 16, which coincides with Janmashtami celebrations, they said. The heightened security and preemptive measures follow a recent incident where right-wing groups stormed the premises on Monday, damaging graves and claiming the site to be a Hindu temple. The entire area is now under constant surveillance, with entry restricted to all but security personnel. The vandalized portions of the mausoleum have already been repaired. In the wake of Monday's violence, Superintendent of Police (SP) Anoop Kumar Singh confirmed that 160 people, including 10 named individuals, were booked for damaging public property and disturbing the peace. Additional police forces from neighbouring Kaushambi and Prayagraj districts have been deployed to the area, and a flag march was conducted on Monday to reassure residents. The administration has sealed the area within a one-kilometer radius with multiple police barricades. Heavy police deployment, including Quick Response Teams (QRTs), along with drone and CCTV surveillance, is being used to maintain an airtight security cordon until after Janmashtami, officials said. Officials have appealed to residents to maintain communal harmony and pursue their grievances through legal channels rather than street action.
