MP govt speeds up process to recharge 1L wells ahead of monsoon

Indore: Ahead of the monsoon season, state govt has accelerated its target of recharging 1.03 lakh wells with rainwater by constructing 'Kup Recharge Pits' across the state. This initiative aims to ensure adequate water for irrigation and drinking for farmers. "For Indore district, the state govt has set a target of constructing 700 Kup Recharge Pits to recharge nearby wells with rainwater," Indore Zila Panchayat CEO Siddhartha Jain said. He said that the administration has so far constructed around 400 Kup Recharge Pits. Jhabua collector Neha Meena and Neemuch collector Himanshu Chandra also confirmed receiving targets to recharge wells. "We have identified the locations where Kup Recharge Pits are to be constructed, and work at most of the places has already started," Meena said. Out of the targeted 1.03 lakh wells, work has already commenced for the construction of Kup Recharge Pits for over 75,000 wells. Khandwa collector Rishav Gupta said that the district has exceeded its allocated target for Kup Recharge Pit construction. "The recharging of these wells is expected to significantly increase the groundwater level and reduce the likelihood of wells drying up during the summer months, thereby providing a stable water supply for agricultural and drinking purposes," he said. BOX: Understanding Kup Recharge Pit Kup Recharge Pit involves a specific construction design. A pit, measuring 3 meter in length, 3 meter in width and 8 meter in depth, is dug 3-6 meter away from the well. This pit is then layered with stones and thick sand. An 8-inch pipe is inserted into the pit and directed into the well. An elbow joint is attached to the pipe's end inside the well, with a 1-foot pipe extending downwards. This system then channels rainwater into the well via a pipeline.
