Radico Khaitan give Indian Whisky a hangover
Liquor companies such as Radico Khaitan and Piccadily Agro Industries expect high tariffs to make Indian single malt whiskies costlier in the US, putting them at a disadvantage to those imported from other countries and local American brands. Indian alco-beverage companies have been trying to expand into the US for over a decade now, selling Indian single malts across retail outlets such as Costco, Tesco, Amazon and Total Wine & More. Radico Khaitan, which sells brands like the Rampur Jugalbandi series with multiple variants aged on American bourbon casks in the US, said there may be a $5-10 price increase per bottle if the 50% tariff is imposed. The company currently sells bottles at $80-100. Madhu Kanna, head of international business at Indri whisky maker Piccadily Agro, said the 50% tariff could place 'considerable pressure' on Indian single malts which are beginning to gain 'well-deserved recognition among US consumers". Kanna said a significant increase in price may affect the affordability of Indian single malts and other premium spirits for US consumers. 'In such a scenario, we would be navigating a highly competitive landscape, especially against locally produced spirits, scotch (which currently faces a 10% tariff), and other international spirits from countries with more favourable trade terms,' he said. Imports of Indian 'beverage, spirits and vinegar' category in the US totalled $19.2 million in calendar year 2024, as per United Nations COMTRADE President Donald Trump last week signed an executive order to double the tariff on US' imports from India to 50%. While the initial 25% duty came into effect Thursday, the additional 25% is effective August 27. Sanjeev Banga, president (international business) at Radico Khaitan, said the company will wait and see how the tariffs pan out. 'Since it's an evolving situation, we are trying not to give a knee jerk reaction,' Banga said.

Indri , the four-year-old brand from Haryana-based Piccadily Agro industries, outsold famed Speyside whisky Glenlivet, as well as Glenfiddich, to emerge as the top-selling single malt in India last year. The list also includes local brands Paul John Rampur and Amrut Premium among the first six by sales, according to IWSR Drinks Market for the first time on record, local sales of Indian single malts surpassed imports from Scotland in 2024, shows the latest IWSR report.'There is certainly a shift from other world whiskies to Indian single malts with increasing acceptance of the local whisky that offers quality liquid at a relatively lower price,' said Praveen Malviya, chief executive, Piccadily for Indri has outstripped supply, Malviya said. The brand boosted growth in the Indian single malt segment, which expanded significantly, even as the growth of international whisky brands tapered off, he said.A single malt whisky is made from malted barley, distilled at a single distillery and is prized for its unique taste. Indians now have a wide selection of locally made brands to choose from, and several of these are more affordable than the and Paul John were the first Indian single malt brands, launched in the 2000s. In the past three to four years, though, the market has seen a flurry of new single malt distillers, such as Piccadily, as well as global liquor companies like Pernod Ricard and Diageo that added their own Indian brands such as Longitude 77 and liquor makers have also launched single malt brands, such as Radico Khaitan 's Rampur single decades, the success of the single malt whisky has been closely tied to perceptions about age, quality and price—the older the better, and more expensive. Indian single malts, however, don't carry age statements because of local climatic conditions. In Scotland, for instance, the evaporation during barrel ageing—known as the angels' share—is 2-3% a year, while in the heat of India, it is commonly more than 10%.Most Indian single malts, therefore, have an optimum maturation of five to eight said maturation isn't crucial anymore.'A lot of consumers want to experiment with malts and globally, age statement is taking a bit of a backseat. As a result, any market-leading brand will have a combination of both age and non-age malts and it will also depend on the uniqueness, whether it's from the nose, the palate and mouthfeel, whether it's smoky or sweet," said Alok Gupta, chief executive of Allied Blenders that sells Arthaus Collective whisky and is setting up a single malt distillery. 'So, a lot of whiskey lovers are constantly look for newer tasting notes.'Sales of Indian single malts grew more than 75% in 2023 to around 9,000 nine-litre cases, surpassing sales of single malt Scotch, IWSR said in its report. With a further advance in sales of more than 25% in 2024, Indian single malts significantly outsold their Scotch counterparts, the alcohol market researcher was primarily due to consumer willingness to experiment with Indian single malts instead of the Scotch competitors. Other reasons were the wider choice and availability in retail and the advantage of sales through the defence ministry-run Canteen Stores Department, where imported brands are barred as a matter of policy. Scotch still has a role to play, as upgraded local brands use Scotch as an ingredient.

It's matured in American oak, both ex-Bourbon and Sherry casks, which adds richness without overwhelming the senses. On the nose, it opens with nuttiness and ripe fruit; on the palate, it offers a smooth, layered texture and finishes with elegant, lingering smoke. Live Events This makes Agneya a compelling choice for whisky drinkers curious about peat but hesitant to dive into more phenolic-heavy styles. Agneya is the second major single malt offering under the Indri label, following the success of Indri-Trini, a triple-cask matured malt launched in 2022. The new release not only differentiates itself from its predecessor but also signals Piccadily's growing confidence in crafting whiskies that resonate both locally and globally. More than a product launch, Agneya is part of a broader ambition to place India firmly on the global whisky map. Piccadily says the brand represents a commitment to innovation and terroir-driven spirits that rival top-tier malts worldwide. Indri Agneya is currently available in Haryana at a minimum selling price (MSP) of ₹3,800. It will soon be launched in premium retail outlets across India, global travel retail, and select international markets in the coming months. Piccadily Agro Industries Limited (PAIL), a publicly listed company, operates primarily in two sectors: distillery and sugar. Its 168-acre facility in Indri, Haryana, houses advanced production systems for malt, extra neutral alcohol (ENA), ethanol, and sugar. In addition to its single malt portfolio, Piccadily also produces blended malt whiskies and Camikara, an aged rum made from sugarcane juice. Since the launch of Indri in 2022, the company has embraced premiumisation, helping it become India's fastest-growing single malt brand by 2024. With Agneya, Piccadily is betting big on India's evolving whisky palate—and looking to make smoke and spice part of the mainstream conversation.
