Awareness programme on IURWTS implementation in Greater Kochi area on August 11
An awareness programme-cum-workshop will be held at 4.30 p.m. on Monday (August 11) at Ernakulam Town Hall on the Integrated Urban Regeneration and Water Transport System (IURWTS) in the Greater Kochi area. Minister for Industries and Law P. Rajeeve will preside over the event, which will be attended by, among others, Ernakulam MP Hibi Eden. The State Cabinet, in May, had given its nod for implementing the IURWTS in Kochi, aimed at reviving six canals, at a revised estimate of ₹3,716.10 crore. The project is intended to make the canals navigable and provide a lasting solution to flooding in the city during the rainy season. Thus, Edappally, Perandoor, Chilavannur, Thevara, Konthuruthy and Market canals will be widened and dredged and walkways built on either side. Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) will continue as the special purpose vehicle for the initiative, while the Kerala Water Authority (KWA) was appointed as the implementing agency for the sewerage components. Funding for the project will be ensured through the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB) and the National River Conservation Directorate, according to the plan. Apart from the project to revive the six canals, Monday's sessions will cover plans to set up garbage treatment plants.
