Telangana to develop eco-town inspired by Japanese city Kitakyushu

Telangana will establish an eco-town spanning 80 acres, modelled after Japan's Kitakyushu city. The state government and Kitakyushu city signed a cooperative agreement Monday to strengthen relations, boost inclusive economic growth, achieve zero emissions, and promote urban innovation. Stating that he studied the development model in Kitakyushu city during his recent tour of Japan, Chief Minister Revanth Reddy said the eco-town model in the city is inspiring. The state government has signed agreements with numerous Japanese companies to develop a similar model in Hyderabad, he said. CM Reddy also explained the new skill development programmes for the youth launched by the government, as well as the interest shown by Telangana students in learning the Japanese language to explore opportunities in Japan, during the meeting. Minister for Information Technology and Industries Duddilla Sridhar Babu highlighted that Telangana is actively promoting increased Japanese investment in the state. Already, 50 youth from Telangana have secured employment opportunities in Japan. To facilitate more such opportunities, the government, through institutions such as the Telangana Overseas Manpower Company (TOMCOM), is offering Japanese language training. In the presence of Kitakyushu City Mayor Kazuhisa Takeuchi, he stated that Telangana will collaborate with Kitakyushu on several forward-looking initiatives, including net-zero targets, riverfront development, circular economy practices, clean technologies, and digital innovation. He also said the state envisions the upcoming Future City as a benchmark in environmental sustainability, with a focus on developing eco-friendly industrial zones, implementing zero-waste design principles, and utilising advanced water and waste management systems. Minister Babu added that the feasibility of introducing direct flight services between Hyderabad and Kitakyushu will be explored to further strengthen bilateral ties. He concluded by outlining the favourable industrial ecosystem present in Telangana and urged Japanese industrialists to consider investing in the state.
