Telangana to develop eco-town inspired by Japanese city Kitakyushu

Indian Express03-06-2025
Telangana will establish an eco-town spanning 80 acres, modelled after Japan's Kitakyushu city. The state government and Kitakyushu city signed a cooperative agreement Monday to strengthen relations, boost inclusive economic growth, achieve zero emissions, and promote urban innovation.
Stating that he studied the development model in Kitakyushu city during his recent tour of Japan, Chief Minister Revanth Reddy said the eco-town model in the city is inspiring. The state government has signed agreements with numerous Japanese companies to develop a similar model in Hyderabad, he said.

Expressing hope that the relations between the two will create an ecosystem for inclusive economic growth, zero emission and urban innovation, CM Reddy briefed the delegation about the government's focus on the Musi rejuvenation project and the creation of assets to strengthen the state economy under the project.
CM Reddy also explained the new skill development programmes for the youth launched by the government, as well as the interest shown by Telangana students in learning the Japanese language to explore opportunities in Japan, during the meeting.
Minister for Information Technology and Industries Duddilla Sridhar Babu highlighted that Telangana is actively promoting increased Japanese investment in the state. Already, 50 youth from Telangana have secured employment opportunities in Japan. To facilitate more such opportunities, the government, through institutions such as the Telangana Overseas Manpower Company (TOMCOM), is offering Japanese language training.
In the presence of Kitakyushu City Mayor Kazuhisa Takeuchi, he stated that Telangana will collaborate with Kitakyushu on several forward-looking initiatives, including net-zero targets, riverfront development, circular economy practices, clean technologies, and digital innovation.
He also said the state envisions the upcoming Future City as a benchmark in environmental sustainability, with a focus on developing eco-friendly industrial zones, implementing zero-waste design principles, and utilising advanced water and waste management systems.
Minister Babu added that the feasibility of introducing direct flight services between Hyderabad and Kitakyushu will be explored to further strengthen bilateral ties. He concluded by outlining the favourable industrial ecosystem present in Telangana and urged Japanese industrialists to consider investing in the state.

Putin Updates Kim Jong Un About Alaska Meeting With Trump In Phone Call: Report

During their conversation, the two leaders discussed a range of bilateral matters, including strengthening diplomatic relations. Russian President Vladimir Putin is preparing for the upcoming summit with US President Donald Trump, scheduled to take place in Anchorage, Alaska, on August 15. The bilateral meeting is expected to focus on efforts to end the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, and comes amid heightened geopolitical manoeuvring. In the days leading up to the summit, President Putin held a phone conversation with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, according to Russian state media outlet RIA Novosti. Citing a statement from the Kremlin press service, the report noted that Putin informed the leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) about the planned meeting with President Trump. 'The President of Russia warmly congratulated the Korean leader on the upcoming national holiday – the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Korea from Japanese colonial rule celebrated on August 15. Kim Jong Un stressed that the DPRK considers this holiday common, remembers the role of the Red Army in the fight against the invaders," the Kremlin statement read. During their conversation, the two leaders discussed a range of bilateral matters, including strengthening diplomatic relations, enhancing neighbourly ties, and promoting cooperation between Moscow and Pyongyang. Putin also expressed gratitude to Kim for North Korea's continued political support, particularly referencing assistance and solidarity shown during Russia's military operations in Ukraine. Specifically, he thanked the North Korean leader for support during the 'liberation of the Kursk region from the formations of the Kiev regime" in August 2024. The phone call, held just days before Putin's anticipated meeting with Trump, underscores the Kremlin's ongoing efforts to consolidate backing from its allies, especially as Ukraine continues to seek support from European nations and NATO partners. In a related development, Reuters reported that the Russian State Duma announced on Tuesday that Vyacheslav Volodin, Speaker of the Russian Parliament, will lead a delegation on an official visit to Pyongyang on August 14-15. The visit is timed to coincide with North Korea's celebrations marking the 80th anniversary of liberation from Japanese rule at the end of World War II. Although the full list of delegation members has not been disclosed, Volodin, a close political ally of President Putin and a frequent head of Russian parliamentary delegations abroad, is confirmed to attend the commemorative events in the North Korean capital. Shohei Ohtani's agent Nez Balelo's whopping net worth revealed amid Hawaii real estate row

Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani and his agent, Nez Balelo, have been sued for allegedly pushing out a Hawaii luxury real estate developer and broker out of a $240 million deal. The civil lawsuit was filed in the Hawaii Circuit Court on Friday. Developer Kevin J Hayes Sr and real estate broker Tomoko Matsumoto claim that Ohtani used his popularity to interfere in the deal. Each residence is designed to exceed 7,000 square feet, with an average price of $17.3 million, and Ohtani was slated to be the first resident. Hayes Sr was serving as a developer, while Matsumoto had been tapped as the listing agent. The complaint alleges Balelo pressured Hayes and Matsumoto for concessions before demanding that Kingsbarn terminate them. The lawsuit claims Kingsbarn admitted the decision was made solely to satisfy Balelo's threats that Ohtani would withdraw his endorsement if the two men stayed on the project. The plaintiffs further accused Ohtani and Balelo of 'exploiting celebrity leverage' to eliminate them from the venture, costing them millions in anticipated profits, management fees, and commissions. They are suing for tortious interference and unjust enrichment, and also allege the pair tried to hinder their role in a second development. Kingsbarn's promotional materials state the Mauna Kea project will be marketed primarily to US and Japanese buyers. Ohtani's name was brought in to boost sales appeal, leveraging his star power in both markets. The 31-year-old Dodgers player is Japan's most famous athlete, earning an estimated $60 million in endorsements in 2024, on top of his 10-year, $700 million MLB contract. Balelo's agency, CAA Baseball, declined to comment when contacted by the New York Post. We checked Forbes to find out that Balelo has a whopping net worth. As per the website he is worth about $39 million. This is not the first time Ohtani has been linked to legal matters. In 2024, his former interpreter, Ippei Mizuhara, pleaded guilty to stealing nearly $17 million from Ohtani and was sentenced to 57 months in prison.
