Rijiju seeks report from I&B Ministry on Arunachal film institute strike

GUWAHATI: Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju has sought a report from the Information and Broadcasting Ministry on the circumstances forcing the students of the Film and Television Institute, Arunachal Pradesh (FTI-AP), to go on an indefinite academic strike on May 15. The FTI-AP, currently managed by the Kolkata-based Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute, is at Jote in the Frontier State's Papum Pare district. The area, 24 km from the State's capital, Itanagar, is under the Arunachal West Lok Sabha constituency that Mr. Rijiju represents. He said that the Joint Secretary of the I&B Ministry was asked to proceed to Jote on Friday (May 23, 2025) after he sought a report on the goings-on in the FTI-AP. 'I have received a preliminary report in this regard. The students have raised genuine issues, and they should be addressed. I have been informed that a meeting between FTI-AP officials and the local administration is being planned. I hope the concerns raised by the students are addressed soon,' Mr. Rijiju told Itanagar-based journalists. State government officials said the meeting of all the stakeholders, including senior officials from the Department of Information and Public Relations and the Deputy Commissioner of Papum Pare, would be held soon. Mr. Rijiju had initiated the FTI-AP almost a decade ago when he was the Minister of State for Home at the Centre. Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone eight years ago. Classes for two-year postgraduate diploma courses in acting, screenwriting, and documentary cinema started in March this year, five months after the three-stage admission process for the first batch was completed. The institute took 14 faculty members on board, but the classes did not commence.

Multiple social media URLs, accounts blocked for working against national interest: I-B Ministry

The Information and Broadcasting Ministry has informed a parliamentary committee that it has blocked, in accordance with law, multiple social media URLs and accounts for access in India as they were found to be working against national interest following the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor . The ministry said it has also advised OTT platforms, media streaming platforms and intermediaries (social media platforms) to discontinue web-series, films, songs, podcasts and other streaming content having origins in Pakistan. The ministry shared the details in its reply to the query of the Parliament's Standing Committee on Communications and Information Technology, headed by BJP MP Nishikant Dubey , about the action being taken against social media influencers and platforms that were working against national interest. It noted it had received multiple requests for blocking the content, and these were processed under relevant laws. It had issued an advisory as well on the issue. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like This might be relevant for you Undo The advisory had noted that several terrorist attacks in India have had cross-border linkages with Pakistan-based state and non-state actors. "In the interest of national security, all OTT platforms, media streaming platforms and intermediaries operating in India are advised to discontinue the web-series, films, songs, podcasts and other streaming media content, whether made available on a subscription based model or otherwise, having its origins in Pakistan with immediate effect," it had said.

Pakistan never welcomed Lata Mangeshkar even though India hosted Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, says Javed Akhtar: ‘This is one-way traffic'

Veteran screenwriter and lyricist Javed Akhtar was asked if the ban on Pakistani artistes working in films was valid, as Fawad Khan's upcoming film Abir Gulaal has been banned by the Information and Broadcasting Ministry. Javed said that such a question had two answers and he proceeded to explain them both in an interaction with PTI on Tuesday. The veteran lyric writer said that in the past, India has hosted many iconic Pakistani artistes like Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and Noor Jehan, but Pakistan has never returned the favour, which is perhaps why Lata Mangeshkar, despite recieving so much love from Pakistanis, never performed in the country as their system never made way for her to perform there. He also said that banning Pakistani artistes from the Indian space will please the fundamentalists as they want to create a wall between the two countries, so Pakistanis cannot see the liberties enjoyed by Indians. Javed Akhtar told PTI, 'The first question should be whether we should allow the Pakistani artistes here. There are two answers, both of them are equally logical. You can toss a coin to find the right answer.' He then spoke about the many great Pakistani singers performing in India and how they received great reception here. 'It has been a one way traffic, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Mehdi Hassan, Ghulam Ali, Noor Jahan came to India, we gave them a great reception. Faiz Ahmad Faiz, who is a poet of subcontinent, he was living in Pakistan, when he came to India during the AB Vajpayee regime, he was treated like a state head, the kind of respect given by the government,' he said. Javed then added that even though many Pakistani poets wrote for Lata Mangeshkar, their government never honoured her in the way Indians honoured their artistes. 'I am afraid, this has never been reciprocated, I mean, I have no complain with the people of Pakistan. Big poets of Pakistan have written poems for Lata Mangeshkar. She was hands down most popular artist in India and Pakistan in the 60's and 70's, but why there was not a single performance of Lata Mangeshkar in Pakistan? We have received artistes with open arms but it was reciprocated by the establishment. I won't complain to people of Pakistan because they loved her, that's why she was so popular. They admired her but there was some blockage, the blockage was system, which I don't understand. This is one-way traffic,' he said. Javed Akhtar then presented another point of view and said, 'If we block Pakistani artistes with a very solid logic, who are we pleasing in Pakistan? The Army and the fundamentalist? This is what they want. A tall wall between India and Pakistan. So Pakistanis cannot see what kind of freedom and liberty Indians enjoy. They want the distance, it suits them. Both these questions are equally valid.' He said that the idea of banning Pakistani artistes must be revisited at a later moment as presently, there is no 'friendly feeling' towards them. 'At the moment, there is hardly any warmth or friendly feeling because of what has happened in Pahalgam. So this is not the time to think about it. This could be thought in better times and hopefully after some years, some sense will prevail and they will have better attitudes towards India from the establishment of Pakistan,' he said and added, 'But at the moment, this question should not be asked, not possible.'

Govt issues advisory refraining media channels from showing live coverage of defence ops

New Delhi, Apr 26 (UNI) The Information and Broadcasting Ministry on Saturday issued advisory to all media channels to refrain from showing live coverage of defence operations and movement of security forces in the interest of national security. The advisory issued by the I&B Ministry has asked all media platforms, news agencies and social media users to exercise utmost responsibility and adhere strictly to existing laws and regulations while reporting on matters concerning defence and other security related operations. The government, while urging media channels to exercise vigilance and responsibility, said that telecasting such content violates Cable Television Networks (Amendment) Rules, 2021 and would be liable for action. "No real-time coverage, dissemination of visuals, or reporting based on "sources-based" information related to defence operations or movement should be undertaken. Premature disclosure of sensitive information may inadvertantly assist hostile elements and endanger operational effectiveness and the safety of personnel," the advisory signed by Kshitij Aggarwal, Deputy Director, I&B Ministry said. It said that past incidents have underscored the importance of responsible reporting. "During events such as the Kargil war, the Mumbai terror attacks (26/11), and the Kandahar hijacking, unrestricted coverage had unintended adverse consequences on national interests", the advisory said. The advisory said, "Media, digital platforms and individuals play a vital role in safeguarding national security. Apart from the legal obligations, it is a shared moral responsibility to ensure that our collective actions do not compromise ongoing operations or the security of our forces". The advisory said that the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has earlier already issued advisories to all TV channels to adhere to Rule 6(1)(p) of Cable Television Networks (Amendment) Rules, 2021). "Such telecast is a violation of Cable Television Networks (Amendment) Rules, 2021 and is liable for action thereunder. Therefore all TV channels are advised not to telecast live coverage of anti-terrorist operations and movement by the security forces in interest of national security. Media coverage may be restricted to periodic briefing by an officer designated by the appropriate government till such operation concludes," it said. It requested all "stakeholders to continue to exercising vigilance, sensitivity, and responsibility in coverage, upholding the highest standards in the service of the nation". UNI RBE CS

Abir Gulaal Songs Deleted From YouTube After Pahalgam Terror Attack

Vaani Kapoor and Pakistani actor Fawad Khan's film Abir Gulaal has stirred controversy following the tragic terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. The attack, on April 22, claimed the lives of 26 people, mostly tourists, and left the country in shock. Since the incident, there has been growing anger on social media, with many calling for a boycott of the film Abir Gulaal. Amid the backlash, Abir Gulaal' s promotional content appears to be quietly disappearing. Two songs that were released earlier — Khudaya Ishq and Angreji Rangrasiya — are no longer available on YouTube India. Originally, both songs were uploaded on the production house's official channel as well as on Saregama's YouTube channel, which owns the music rights. However, both videos have now been taken down from YouTube India. Another song, Tain Tain, was also supposed to be released on Wednesday, as previously announced by the makers. But so far, it has not been released — and no official statement has been issued by the team either. The film Abir Gulaal will not be released in India, as per sources in the Information and Broadcasting Ministry. The movie has been denied a release following the growing controversy surrounding it. Abir Gulaal had already come under fire after the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), led by Raj Thackeray, strongly opposed its release. The party cited strained relations between India and Pakistan, arguing that allowing a film featuring a Pakistani actor to release in India was inappropriate. The boycott calls began as soon as the teaser of the film was released, on April 1. The situation escalated after the tragic terror attack in Pahalgam. Directed by Aarti S Bagdi, Abir Gulaal was scheduled to hit the screens on May 9. The film also features Riddhi Dogra, Lisa Haydon, Farida Jalal, Soni Razdan, Parmeet Sethi and Rahul Vohra in important roles.
