2 people wounded in shooting at Spartan College in Inglewood; suspect in custody
A suspect has been arrested in connection with a shooting at the Spartan College of Aeronautics and Technology in Inglewood, California, Friday afternoon that left two people wounded. The shooting happened at around 3:40 p.m. Pacific Time on the school campus, which is located in the 8900 block of Aviation Boulevard, according to the Inglewood Police Department. Inglewood is part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area. Firefighters arrived to find two victims suffering from wounds, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. Both were taken to a nearby hospital with critical injuries. The victims were believed to be female employees of the college, Inglewood Mayor James T. Butts told CBS News Los Angeles. He said that the alleged gunman was possibly seen wearing a security uniform as the shooting happened. Police conducted a thorough search of the campus and no suspect was found, but they were able to determine his identity and the car he was driving. Just after 6 p.m., Butts reported that a suspect was arrested. He later identified the man was 40-year-old Jesse Figueroa. "It is our understanding that the suspect was a former employee of the college," Butts said. The male suspect was located near Berendo and Twelfth streets in Pico-Union after emergency dispatchers received a 911 call about the shooting that brought them to that location, police said. Police said the suspect's family made the 911 call in order to report that he had shot two women. They told officers that the gun he used was in the backseat of his car, where he was located and taken into custody without further incident, police said. Dozens of people, believed to be staff and students, were seen on the street outside of the school as the preliminary investigation began. There was also a large police presence, many of whom could be seen wearing tactical gear. L.A. County firefighters initially reported that there were three gunshot victims, but later clarified that number once details became more apparent.

Southern California man violently beaten in possible hate crime attack as suspect yells racial slurs
An Inglewood man recalls fearing for his life as he was brutally assaulted outside his home by an attacker who yelled racial slurs at him. On April 15, Javier Ibarra, 41, was heading to work when he opened a gate outside his home on the 200 block of West Hyde Park Boulevard at 6:40 a.m. As Ibarra's head was turned toward the gate, surveillance video captured the male suspect sprinting towards Ibarra from behind and punching him in the head. The suspect, who was wearing a facemask, gloves, and a matching green-colored hoodie and sweatpants set, repeatedly punches Ibarra in the head and face and he tries to defend himself. 'He ran around my truck and he yelled at me very quickly, 'You f****** Mexican! I hate you!' and he started to punch me,' Ibarra recalled. The suspect eventually grabs Ibarra and throws him onto the ground while Ibarra is heard screaming in pain. 'All over my face, there was a lot of blood,' Ibarra said. 'My eye was completely closed. It was a very horrible experience because when I fell on the floor, I was thinking, 'This guy, he's going to kill me.' I didn't know what to do.' Ibarra is heard yelling for help and calling his wife's name as the man continued punching and kicking him. Surveillance video showed his wife stepping outside before quickly darting back inside to grab her cellphone so she could record the suspect, but the man was able to escape. He took Ibarra's house keys with him as he fled. Inglewood police said his vehicle was described as a silver, blue or green Chevy Malibu sedan. Ibarra, who is Hispanic, said he didn't know the man and believes he was targeted in a possible hate crime. 'I think it's got to be a hate crime,' he said. 'But, I don't know the reason. I'm Hispanic, but I'm not looking for problems with anybody.' The suspect is believed to be between 30-40 years old. He stands around 6 feet tall and weighs about 200 pounds. As Ibarra continues recovering from the brutal assault, he said his wife and daughter are fearful that the attacker could return. 'I'm more afraid, not for me, but for my daughter because she doesn't want to go to school, she doesn't want to go outside, she doesn't want to play,' Ibarra said. Anyone with information on the incident is urged to call the Inglewood Police Department at 310-412-5206. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
