'To clarify, this policy does not prohibit player use of these substances, but rather it restricts clubs from providing or supplying them in any form. The NFL has confirmed this to us.' 3 Smelling salts lay on the sidelines during a game between the Colts and Steelers, AP Advertisement The league's original memo in which it announced the new prohibition of ammonia, which the salts contain, noted that the NFL's head, neck and spine committee made the recommendation for the ban based on the FDA's warning in 2024 about the negative effects of ammonia inhalants. NFL bans smelling salts ahead of 2025 season as George Kittle says he's ‘distraught'

The use of 'smelling salts' is being banned by the NFL for this upcoming season, the league announced in a memo to teams Tuesday. The league cited a 2024 warning by the FDA about smelling salts and other ammonia inhalants, and the ban extends to pregame activities, games and halftime on the sidelines and in the locker rooms. 'In 2024, the FDA issued a warning to companies that produce commercially available ammonia inhalants (AIs), as well as to consumers about the purchase and use of AIs, regarding the lack of evidence supporting the safety or efficacy of AIs marketed for improving mental alertness or boosting energy,' the memo explained. AIs also have the potential to mask certain neurologic signs and symptoms, including some potential signs of concussion. As a result, the NFL Head, Neck, and Spine Committee recommended prohibiting the use of AIs for any purpose during play in the NFL.' Advertisement Smelling salts have long been used by NFL players as a stimulant, but that will seemingly come to an end with the ban that includes coaches, team physicians, athletic trainers, and strength and conditioning coaches, among other team personnel. The ban became a topic of conversation on NFL Network's 'Inside Training Camp' on Tuesday when 49ers tight end George Kittle crashed the set during an interview with Fred Warner to air his grievances with the memo. NFL reporter has awkward Deebo Samuel moment after revealing finger injury

NFL Network's Mike Garafolo did not make Deebo Samuel too happy at the end of an NFL Network interview when he appeared to accidentally reveal that the Commanders' new wide receiver was dealing with a finger injury. The awkward moment happened just as the interview was wrapping up and Garafolo began explaining why he wasn't going to shake Samuel's hand. 'Deebo Samuel joined us on Inside Training Camp live. Usually, I give a handshake when a guy leaves,' Garafolo said. Advertisement 3 Deebo Samuel (r.) reacts during an interview with NFL Network. Seeing the unhappy look on Samuel's face or NFL Network analyst Marc Ross, Garafolo paused and asked, 'Oh, was I not supposed to say that?' Ross indicated that he wasn't, and Garafolo attempted to get out of the interview without anymore goofs. Advertisement 'Alright, edit that part out,' Garafolo replied. 'Strike that, it didn't happen. I'll give him a left-handed fist bump. I ain't getting anything now.' 3 Deebo Samuel (r.) participates in an interview at training camp. Samuel's reaction was a bit odd, considering that the jammed finger had already been reported on by others at training camp. Advertisement Samuel apparently jammed the finger after taking a pass from Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels that hit his hands, ESPN reported. The veteran wide receiver was traded to the Commanders this past offseason and is coming off a 2024 campaign with the 49ers in which he recorded 51 catches for 670 yards and three touchdowns. Samuel is hoping to rebound from last season with a Commanders team that is coming off a trip to the NFC Championship game.
