NFL bans smelling salts ahead of 2025 season as George Kittle says he's ‘distraught'
The league cited a 2024 warning by the FDA about smelling salts and other ammonia inhalants, and the ban extends to pregame activities, games and halftime on the sidelines and in the locker rooms.
'In 2024, the FDA issued a warning to companies that produce commercially available ammonia inhalants (AIs), as well as to consumers about the purchase and use of AIs, regarding the lack of evidence supporting the safety or efficacy of AIs marketed for improving mental alertness or boosting energy,' the memo explained.

'The FDA noted potential negative effects from AI use. AIs also have the potential to mask certain neurologic signs and symptoms, including some potential signs of concussion. As a result, the NFL Head, Neck, and Spine Committee recommended prohibiting the use of AIs for any purpose during play in the NFL.'

Smelling salts have long been used by NFL players as a stimulant, but that will seemingly come to an end with the ban that includes coaches, team physicians, athletic trainers, and strength and conditioning coaches, among other team personnel.
The ban became a topic of conversation on NFL Network's 'Inside Training Camp' on Tuesday when 49ers tight end George Kittle crashed the set during an interview with Fred Warner to air his grievances with the memo.

'I've been distraught all day,' Kittle said jokingly. 'I considered retirement. We've got to figure out a middle ground here, guys. Somebody help me out, somebody come up with a good idea.
'I miss those already.'

The 26-year-old LT has been named to two Pro Bowls: He earned the nod his rookie season and was invited back last season after another stellar year. With Slater out for the season, the Chargers will have to turn to its depth chart to replace him. Trey Pipkins III (LT/RT) and Ryan Nelson (LT) are listed as the two potential backups to Slater in the O-Line.

Cowboys TE Jake Ferguson leaves practice after being hit in the back
OXNARD, Calif. (AP) — Dallas Cowboys tight end Jake Ferguson was hit in the back on Thursday and left practice early. Ferguson was hurt in a red-zone drill when linebacker Kenneth Murray Jr. made contact with him during a passing play. Ferguson stayed down on his back for several minutes, with teammates surrounding him, but he was able to get up under his own power. 'I just got to keep my teammate up,' Murray said. 'Down in the red zone, everything happens fast, you know, just trying to be on it quick. There's not a lot of space, not a lot of room.' Ferguson was examined by a trainer and appeared to be trying to stretch out his back before leaving the field at the start of the next period. Quarterback Dak Prescott described the hit as two players acting on instincts that are 'hard to turn off in split-second moments." 'More importantly, Jake jumped up, Jake dapped him up and said he was good, and we're going to move forward,' Prescott said about Ferguson shaking hands with Murray after the hit. Ferguson signed a four-year, $52 million extension on July 27 that includes a $12 million signing bonus. He had 59 catches for 494 yards but did not have a touchdown reception last season. The previous year, Ferguson had career highs with 71 catches for 761 yards and five TDs.
