ASRY welcomes young cancer fighters for ‘Captain's Day' with Smile Initiative

To mark International Childhood Cancer Day, observed every 15 February the Arab Shipbuilding and Repair Yard Company (ASRY) held 'Captain's Day' in partnership with the Smile Initiative, a program under the Future Society for Youth that provides emotional and psychological support to children in Bahrain with cancer. As part of the event, ASRY welcomed a group of young cancer fighters, accompanied by their families, for a visit to the company's facilities. The children had the chance to step into the role of a ship's captain, taking part in an interactive experience aboard one of the docked vessels under repair. ASRY's Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Khalifa, speaking on the sidelines of the event, praised the efforts of everyone involved, particularly the volunteers from the Smile Initiative, whose ongoing support has helped lift the spirits of children battling cancer and bring them moments of joy. He also reaffirmed the company's strong backing of humanitarian efforts aimed at making a meaningful difference for all members of the community. ASRY's collaboration with the Smile Initiative is part of its ongoing work to strengthen community partnerships and reinforce the values of generosity and solidarity, aiming to leave a lasting, positive mark on society and its people.

The bazar, featuring handmade crafts, local food, and artwork, attracted students, professionals, and families eager to support the facility, which provides cancer treatment to children in the Kurdistan Region. 'This initiative is a community-driven effort to support children battling cancer,' the event's coordinator Suzan Abu Bakr told Shafaq News, 'Hiwa Hospital requires sustained assistance to ensure that these children receive the treatment they need.' The fundraiser also included awareness activities focusing on the importance of early cancer detection and the role families play in safeguarding their children's health. Organizers hope that 'this event can contribute to improving services at the hospital and ease the suffering of young patients.' Her remarks came during a tour of three specialized pediatric cancer treatment centers in Lebanon, marking International Childhood Cancer Day, observed annually on February 15. During her visits, she met with medical teams, young patients, and their families, gaining firsthand insight into their health conditions and the difficulties these centers face in securing medication and advanced treatments. The First Lady began her tour at the Children's Cancer Center at Al-Zahraa Hospital, followed by a visit to the Children's Cancer Center of Lebanon (CCCL), and concluded at the pediatric oncology department at Saint George Hospital University Medical Center. She was welcomed by the hospital's director, alongside medical staff and nurses, who expressed their appreciation for her visit and support.

'A total of 43,062 cancer cases have been registered in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region in 2023, of which 1,922 were among children aged 14 and below,' Sura Yassin, director of the Cancer Registration Division at the Iraqi Cancer Board, told Rudaw on Saturday. These are the latest statistics available. That is 11 out of every 100,000 children under the age of 14 are diagnosed with cancer. Tragically, she said that 448 children lost their lives that year due to the disease. Yassin noted that the province of Muthanna recorded the highest childhood cancer rates, followed by Sulaimani, Erbil, and Baghdad. The province of Babil recorded the lowest rate. 'Leukemia was the most common type of cancer among children, with 551 cases recorded in 2023,' Yassin said, adding that '140 of those cases were fatal.' Following Leukemia, the most prevalent types of cancer among children according to Yassin 'were brain cancer and lymphoma.' There were notable gender disparities in the number of childhood cancer cases, with a higher incidence in boys. Of the 1,922 diagnosed cases, '1,062 were males and 860 are females,' said Yassin. February 15 is marked annually as World Childhood Cancer Day, an occasion to raise global awareness about the challenges faced by children battling cancer.
