Road construction season in both Iowa and Nebraska are underway
SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KCAU) — When the weather gets warmer, Siouxlanders will tend to see more bulldozers out as construction season gets underway in both Nebraska and Iowa. 'We've got a lot of work going on on Highway 75 and 77 on the east side of our state from Lyons to Decatur' said Kevin Domoagalla with the Nebraska DOT Domogalla added that construction season is well underway in Nebraska. One big project they are heavily focused on is a $70 million lane expansion on Highway 275 all the way to West Point. 'We're doing a four lane, a two plus two, we're expanding Highway 75 to a two-hour expressway. We've got the first segment of it started between Highway 57 and Wisner,' Domogalla said. Many farmers nearly done with planting; agronomists release soil moisture survey In Sioux City, Sarah Tracy with the Iowa DOT said that projects happening here in Siouxland will primarily be bridge repairs. 'In the Siouxland area, there's a few major road construction projects that people will see on I-29. There's some bridge repairs being made; that is the bridge that goes into Nebraska. The contractor is making good progress on that, and they will switch lanes with the width restriction. That's coming up in the next couple of weeks,' Tracy with the Iowa DOT On top of the bridge repairs, the one thing that's been on Sioux City residents' minds are the latest update on the Gordon Drive viaduct, Tracy expressed that the wheels are in motion in repairing it, but will to lead some road closures coming soon. 'The slip ramp from Gordon Drive to Lewis Boulevard, that will be closed and that is associated with archeological work that needs to be done for the Gordon Drive by that project. Definitely steps are moving forward to get to the point where we're replacing the drive viaduct,' Tracy said. Both Tracy and Domogalla said the projects will not cause any detour. 'Detours? No, intermittent lane closures though. So, just drivers be aware that there will be lane closures associated with these projects,' Tracy said. 'Our goal is to not have to detour traffic. We try to do it under traffic, so that does not inconvenience people quite so much,' said Domogalla. And with projects underway, Domogalla wants to remind folks to not be distracted when driving through a construction zone. Sioux City City Council votes on changes to DEI policies 'Whenever you're in a construction zone, put your phone down, focus on the act of driving, and keep an eye out for people, keep an eye out for equipment,' Domogalla said. The Gordon Drive viaduct slip ramp closure will begin a little after the Fourth of July, and the Highway 275 lane expansion is scheduled to finish in 2029. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Highway 75 railroad crossing construction to affect Merrill businesses
MERRILL, Iowa (KCAU) — The Iowa Department of Transportation says both the north and southbound lanes on Highway 75 at the BNSF railroad crossing south of Merrill are scheduled to close starting April 7. This will allow crews to replace the railroad crossing surface, while the Iowa DOT will start pavement replacement of Highway 75 at the crossing. 'All of the southbound traffic will be coming down Main Street and crossing the railroad tracks and going south, the old 75 or third street out of town,' Merrill Mayor Bruce Norgaard said. 'So Larry's Automotive is going to have a lot of traffic coming around the corner, and Cuginis restaurant, an Italian restaurant, is going to have a lot of traffic going past there.' Sioux City Marina operating under new management Norgaard said that while the construction takes place near Merrill, there will also some brief traffic changes with the northbound lane. 'All northbound traffic during this ten, 12-day construction process with railroad tracks, the northbound traffic is going to be turning to Hinton and going east to K-49 or Mahogany Avenue and north to C-38,' he said. 'But the southbound traffic is going to be going over the 30, still going south on 75.' The owners of two local businesses, Lampe Incorporated and Cuginis Italian Restaurant, say the start of this project has been long overdue. 'It needs to be done,' Lampe Incorporated owner Melissa Lampe said. 'The railroad crossing has been not functioning well for a couple of years, and it stops traffic for a long period of time sometimes.' 'There's some issues with the pavement, and it's something that needs to be done,' Cuginis owner Marco Deluna said. Deluna says he believes that there's a hidden upside to this construction project. Orange City art exhibit to showcase Siouxland artists 'It's going to cause chaos here in town, but also it's going to be a great opportunity for the small restaurants, for people who might know and might not know about it, and probably be a good chance so that people pass by and see us,' Deluna said. Mayor Norgaard said he wanted to remind residents during this project to take their time while on the road. 'I hope people are very cautious and careful when you're coming through through town,' he said. 'You'll always hope that everyone uses common sense and they're patient because it's going to take patience.' Iowa DOT officials say they expect this closure to last for 12 days, weather permitting. Ankeny officials to share ideas for city revitalization
ANKENY, Iowa — The City of Ankeny is holding a public open house on Monday evening to share ideas for revitalizing a vital part of the community. The city started a revitalization plan for South Ankeny Boulevard last summer, according to the city's Economic Development Director, Derek Lord. Now, Ankeny is nearly done with the plan. 'The South Ankeny Blvd is a vital corridor in the center of our community and really what it means is the plan is intended to ensure that the corridor will remain viable for the next 60 or 70 years just like it's been viable for the last 60 or 70 years,' he said. Postal workers rally in Ames, other rallies occur across the state Their goal was to improve the economic health in the area of South Ankeny Boulevard between First Street and Oralabor Road. The city asked residents for their input through an online survey and at public forums. Lord said around 1,000 residents provided feedback. Some of the improvements residents have raised include: improving vehicle and pedestrian safety creating more consistent development patterns adding more sit-down restaurants building more mixed-use developments, for example, buildings of lots for commercial and residential use establishing better branding to identify the corridor 'We also heard people want to see the diversity of businesses maintained in the corridor because the South Ankeny Corridor does have a nice eclectic mix of businesses that are both local and regional,' said Lord. 'People would also like to see the corridor remain its affordability.' This comes as the city of Ankeny has seen tremendous growth in recent years. According to data outlined by Neilsberg, the city's population increased 169% between the years 2000 and 2023. The Public Open House will take place Monday evening at the New City Church. Ankeny residents are encouraged to stop by between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to hear the city's ideas for the corridor. The New City Church is located at 849 South Ankeny Boulevard.
