Ankeny officials to share ideas for city revitalization

ANKENY, Iowa — The City of Ankeny is holding a public open house on Monday evening to share ideas for revitalizing a vital part of the community.
The city started a revitalization plan for South Ankeny Boulevard last summer, according to the city's Economic Development Director, Derek Lord. Now, Ankeny is nearly done with the plan.
'The South Ankeny Blvd is a vital corridor in the center of our community and really what it means is the plan is intended to ensure that the corridor will remain viable for the next 60 or 70 years just like it's been viable for the last 60 or 70 years,' he said.

Their goal was to improve the economic health in the area of South Ankeny Boulevard between First Street and Oralabor Road.
The city asked residents for their input through an online survey and at public forums. Lord said around 1,000 residents provided feedback.
Some of the improvements residents have raised include:
improving vehicle and pedestrian safety
creating more consistent development patterns
adding more sit-down restaurants
building more mixed-use developments, for example, buildings of lots for commercial and residential use
establishing better branding to identify the corridor
'We also heard people want to see the diversity of businesses maintained in the corridor because the South Ankeny Corridor does have a nice eclectic mix of businesses that are both local and regional,' said Lord. 'People would also like to see the corridor remain its affordability.'
This comes as the city of Ankeny has seen tremendous growth in recent years. According to data outlined by Neilsberg, the city's population increased 169% between the years 2000 and 2023.
The Public Open House will take place Monday evening at the New City Church. Ankeny residents are encouraged to stop by between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to hear the city's ideas for the corridor.
The New City Church is located at 849 South Ankeny Boulevard.

China, India in Talks to Resume Border Trade After 5-Year Pause

India and China are discussing resuming border trade of locally made goods after more than five years, marking the latest step in a slow but steady effort by the Asian neighbors to ease long-standing tensions, according to officials in New Delhi familiar with the matter. Both sides have proposed restarting trade through designated points on the shared border, and the matter is currently under bilateral discussion, the people said, asking not to be identified as the discussions are still private.

Goldman Sachs sees Fed cutting rates thrice in 2025, twice more in 2026

NEW YORK (Reuters) -Goldman Sachs said on Wednesday in a research note it expects the U.S. Federal Reserve to deliver three 25-basis-point interest rate cuts this year and two more in 2026. This would put the terminal rate at between 3% and 3.25%, down from the current 4.25%-4.50% level. The Goldman note followed data on Tuesday showing U.S. consumer prices increased marginally in July, rising just 0.2% last month after a gain of 0.3% in June, in line with economists' expectations. The moderation in the Consumer Price Index reflected a 2.2% decline in gasoline prices. Food prices were unchanged after rising 0.3% for two straight months. U.S. rate futures priced in late Wednesday a 93% chance of a 25-bps easing next month and as much as a 7% probability of a 50-bps rate decline, according to LSEG calculations. The latter was 3% earlier on Wednesday. Traders also implied about 65 bps of easing this year, up from roughly 60 bps last week. The slight pop in the 50-bps odds on Wednesday came after U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent pushed for cuts of that magnitude in interviews with Fox News on Tuesday and Bloomberg TV on Wednesday. Bessent said on Bloomberg TV that he thought an aggressive half-point cut was possible given recent weak employment numbers. He based his argument for cuts on recent Bureau of Labor Statistics data showing soft employment gains in May, June, and July, in contrast to initial estimates for May and June indicating stronger employment growth. "Rates are too constrictive ... We should probably be 150 to 175 basis points lower," Bessent said, adding to the Trump administration's penchant for public criticism and detailed policy advice for the independent central bank. Google CEO adds a new calendar feature at Stripe co-founder's request

Talk about customer service. On Wednesday, Google CEO Sundar Pichai posted on X about Google Calendar's new feature to duplicate events — an addition that was specifically requested by Stripe co-founder John Collison last month, also via an X post. On July 5, Collison asked if Google Calendar users could get a Ctrl-click option that would allow them to easily duplicate events, similar to the feature that many native calendar applications already have. Collison tagged Pichai in his post at the time. While users often tag companies and CEOs with online feedback and complaints, you know you've made it when the CEO not only replies to you, but also implements the change you've asked for. That's the case for Collison, at least. Wrote Pichai, 'This feature is now live for everyone on Google Calendar on the web — thanks for the suggestion!' Naturally, some X users began to poke fun at Collison's seeming influence by asking him to help with their own specific concerns, too. Joked Box CEO Aaron Levie, for example, referring to the notoriously congested highway that runs through Silicon Valley, where Waymo's self-driving cars currently have limited availability, 'John, can you ask Waymo to work on El Camino through the peninsula? Thanks!'
