Find out strength in Lumadan first, Amanah told

Published on: Saturday, July 26, 2025 Published on: Sat, Jul 26, 2025 By: Iskandar Dzulkifli Text Size: Kota Kinabalu: Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) is advised to re-evaluate its intention to contest the Lumadan state seat in the upcoming election by considering the strength of grassroots support in the area. Lumadan Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan Rakyat) Division Chief Mazlan Joehari Manan (pic) said any move to contest should be made with due regard to the local political reality. He said the Lumadan seat, currently held by Datuk Ruslan Muharam of Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) under the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) coalition, remains strongly backed by grassroots supporters. 'We welcome Amanah's interest as a Pakatan Harapan (PH) component to serve in Lumadan, but they must first gauge their grassroots strength before declaring their intention to contest. 'The seat is currently held by Ruslan, who has strong grassroots support. Therefore, this momentum of support for GRS must continue without interference that may threaten this potential,' Mazlan said in a statement on Wednesday. Amanah President Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu recently stated the party's intention to contest the Lumadan, Tanjung Aru and Sulabayan seats in the 17th State Election (PRN17). Amanah is part pf the Pakatan Harapan coalition which has a political arrangement with GRS in the unity government. Mohamad reportedly said discussions are still ongoing, but negotiations involving two other undisclosed seats under PH and Barisan Nasional (BN) have already been finalised. Mazlan, who is also Special Officer to the Chief Minister, stressed that preserving the GRS-PH government's stability requires any contesting efforts to be done through consultation and mutual understanding. 'As a component of GRS, I will continue to support and defend the Lumadan seat to remain under GRS in the coming State Election. It is only right, as the Lumadan seat belongs to GRS, and the candidate for PRN17 should rightfully come from GRS,' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Tanjung Aru PGRS confident of winning three seats

Published on: Tuesday, July 22, 2025 Published on: Tue, Jul 22, 2025 By: Iskandar Dzulkifli Text Size: PGRS Tanjung Aru Division Chief Datuk Awang Ahmad Sah Sahari said this confidence is based on the current situation of strong support for local parties. Kota Kinabalu: Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (PGRS) will ensure Tanjung Aru, Tanjung Keramat and Petagas are won by Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) in the coming 17th state election (PRN17). PGRS Tanjung Aru Division Chief Datuk Awang Ahmad Sah Sahari said this confidence is based on the current situation of strong support for local parties. According to him, the situation also reflects the instability within Sabah Umno, particularly the Putatan Division, which had previously been confident in its ability to reclaim all three seats in the coming 17th state election (PRN17). 'This sentiment is also a clear message of the Sabah people's rejection of external parties, particularly Umno, while expressing their support for GRS as a coalition of local parties. 'This situation is evident from the survey we conducted, particularly in Petagas, Tanjung Aru and Tanjung Keramat, which showed that the majority of the people reject national parties and instead support GRS.' 'Support from the youth, particularly new and undecided voters, largely favours GRS and local leadership to continue leading Sabah after the 17th state election (PRN17).' 'For the people, only local parties like GRS truly understand the heartbeat of Sabah's citizens,' he said when met at the Tanjung Aru Open Fut8 Football Championship organised by the PGRS Tanjung Aru Division here on July 20. He was commenting on remarks by Umno Putatan Division Chief, Jeffrey Nor Mohamad, who had earlier expressed confidence in capturing all three seats in PRN17. He said that such confidence was understandable, as the three seats previously belonged to Umno, particularly Petagas, which was once a stronghold of Barisan Nasional (BN). Awang, who is also Petagas Assemblyman, said the focus on safeguarding the interests and welfare of the people through the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) agenda had also contributed to this public support. He said under the leadership of the Chief Minister and GRS Chairman, Datuk Seri Hajiji Haji Noor, various assistance programmes had been provided in education, social welfare and development. 'Under the SMJ agenda, the GRS government has provided substantial assistance and incentives to the people. 'In education alone, there are numerous free initiatives for Sabah's children that have never been implemented by previous governments, including the SMJ housing aid, Syukur programme and many others.' 'All these factors contribute to the public's support for GRS, particularly in Petagas, Tanjung Aru and Tanjung Keramat, thereby securing the seats for GRS in the coming 17th state election,' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? PKR: Matunggong water woe happening too long

Published on: Wednesday, July 16, 2025 Published on: Wed, Jul 16, 2025 By: Iskandar Dzulkifli Text Size: Sazalye who is also Sabah PKR Secretary urged the Matunggong and Kudat District Water Departments, to provide an official explanation for the cause of the water supply disruption. KUDAT: PKR Kota Marudu branch head Sazalye Donol urged the authorities to promptly resolve the prolonged water supply disruptions affecting several villages in the Matunggong area. He said several villages had been experiencing disruptions and shortages for nearly two weeks, causing residents to face difficulties in carrying out their daily activities. Advertisement He said despite repeated complaints, there's still no real solution from the authorities to ease the hardship faced by the local community. 'This issue has been going on for far too long. It keeps happening over and over, and there's still no real fix. In the end, it's the villagers who suffer the most, forced to live with the stress and burden of an unreliable water supply.' 'What worries us even more is that the water coming into the homes is cloudy and unsafe, making it really hard for families to use it for their daily needs,' he said in a statement here, on July 15. Sazalye who is also Sabah PKR Secretary urged the Matunggong and Kudat District Water Departments, to provide an official explanation for the cause of the water supply disruption. He said immediate and proactive measures are necessary to address the issue, including provision of alternative water supplies such as regular tanker deliveries. He said a long-term solution is necessary to ensure the sustainability of clean water supply to all residents, as water is a basic necessity that cannot be taken lightly. 'This is not a political issue. It concerns the basic needs of the people. We seek assurance, not just promises, and an immediate solution is required for the well-being of the community,' he emphasised. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Time to add up to 17 more seats: Jeffrey

Published on: Monday, July 14, 2025 Published on: Mon, Jul 14, 2025 By: Iskandar Dzulkifli Text Size: Jeffrey said the proposal serves as a stepping stone to increase the number of parliamentary seats in Sabah in the future, particularly in the Borneo region. Kota Kinabalu: Parti Solidariti Tanah Air Ku (Star) has proposed adding 14 to 17 new State Legislative Assembly (DUN) seats in Sabah. Party President Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey Kitingan said this follows the recent approval of additional DUN seats in Sarawak and Sabah should take similar action. 'Since Sarawak has started (passed the Bill to add DUN seats), we should do the same thing. I will raise this issue at the coming Cabinet meeting. 'My estimate is that between 14 and 17 new seats need to be added,' he said when met at the 'Oppa' Film Screening on Scam Awareness at the Marina Club, Sunday. Also present was Luyang Star Division Chief Eliza Leong, who is also Persatuan Inspirasi Sabah President who organised the event. Jeffrey, who is also Deputy Chief Minister, said the proposal serves as a stepping stone to increase the number of parliamentary seats in Sabah in the future, particularly in the Borneo region. He noted that Sabah and Sarawak currently have 25 and 31 parliamentary seats respectively, representing about 25 per cent of the total 222 parliamentary seats. 'This means Peninsular Malaysia already has more than a two-thirds advantage (in parliament), while Sabah-Sarawak only have 56 parliamentary seats and we have agreed to change this situation. 'Before that, we need to first increase the number of DUN seats in Sabah and we expect an addition of around 34 new parliamentary seats (in Sabah), in my opinion,' he said. In another development, Jeffrey hopes the Technical Meeting on the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) scheduled for today (July 14) will reach a resolution on the issue of returning 40 per cent net revenue to Sabah. He said this should be fulfilled as stipulated in the Federal Constitution and implemented, but the matter has been dragging on for more than 40 years without the required five-yearly review. 'The 40 per cent net revenue is not about petroleum royalty, this involves revenue from all sources such as business and so on obtained from Sabah and the Federation. 'Sixty per cent belongs to the Federal Government, while 40 per cent returns to us (Sabah) and the Federal Government must determine an appropriate amount (for that 40 per cent) and Sabah will also present the amount based on records,' he said. 'Therefore, I hope the MA63 Technical Meeting will reach a resolution on this 40 per cent issue and subsequently implement it as stipulated in the Constitution,' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
