Rap icon cancels gig one hour before performance after 'unforeseen illness'
A fan favourite rapper was supposed to tear up the Budweiser Stage in Toronto on August 11. Instead, fans were left staring at a screen announcing the show was postponed due to an 'unforeseen illness.' Lil Wayne was scheduled to perform for his Canadian fans as part of his Tha Carter VI Tour, which kicked off in June and is set to run until October. No one saw it coming – the venue had already filled up, and the announcement dropped at 8 pm, a whole hour after the show was meant to start. The screen lit up with a message saying Weezy was too sick to perform, but he 'loves putting on nothing short of the best performances.' It promised that all tickets would still be valid for the rescheduled date, but as of now, that date is a mystery. There's been no official follow-up or apology from the 42-year-old's team, but fans online were clearly disappointed. One fan, @fridayrickdred, took to X to say: 'Lil Wayne cancels Toronto concert last min! We gotta talk about Wayne possibly destroying his legacy. He might be inching towards COOKED status! Or is he already there?' 'You still the best rapper ever though but you broke my heart tn,' @lefthooklili added. Tha Carter VI Tour is set to cover over 30 cities across North America. That includes stops in New York, Detroit, Vegas, and more – and yes, Toronto was one of the more hyped ones as it was his first show back in Canada since 2023. Wayne is touring off the back of his new album, Tha Carter VI, which dropped on June 6 and features an insane mix of guests – Bono, Andrea Bocelli, Big Sean, Jelly Roll, and even his own sons. The album marks his 14th studio release, and for a rapper with over two decades in the game, he's still pushing his sound. The song Island Holiday even samples Weezer's Island in the Sun, bringing in a whole different vibe. Another standout is Bells, a track that flips LL Cool J's Rock the Bells – and yes, LL joined Wayne on stage at the Madison Square Garden tour opener to perform it live. The performance was a big deal for the rapper, as it was Wayne's first time headlining the iconic venue. The next scheduled show is in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, on August 16 – and as of now, it's still on. More Trending Meanwhile, Wayne's got more going on than just the tour. He's headlining the 2025 iHeartRadio Music Festival in Vegas this September alongside Maroon 5, LL Cool J, and Bryan Adams – a pretty wild lineup. He's also popping up on other people's tracks – like Chance the Rapper's new single Tree, which dropped last week and features a solid Wayne verse. Wayne may be nearly 20 years removed from Tha Carter II, but he's proving he's still a major player in 2025.. Got a story? Lil Wayne's New Song 'Island Holiday' Samples Weezer's 'Island in the Sun'
The post Lil Wayne's New Song 'Island Holiday' Samples Weezer's 'Island in the Sun' appeared first on Consequence. During his peak mixtape days, Lil Wayne gained notoriety for rapping over hip-hop and R&B instrumentals from other artists. Now, Weezy has sampled rock band Weezer's 2001 single 'Island in the Sun' on a new song from his latest album, Tha Carter VI. Titled 'Island Holiday,' Lil Wayne's track borrows heavily from the cut on Weezer's 2001 self-titled album (better known as The Green Album). In addition to sampling the guitar riff, Wayne interpolates many of Weezer frontman Rivers Cuomo's original lyrics. Listen to both tracks below. Get Lil Wayne Tickets Here 'When you're on a holiday/ You can't find the words to say,' a heavily Auto-Tuned Weezy croons while opening the track. 'All the things that come to you/ And I wanna feel it, too.' He continues by singing, 'On an island in the sun/ We'll be playin' and havin' fun/ And it makes me feel so fine/ I can't control my brain.' These lines are identical to the lyrics in the first verse and chorus of 'Island in the Sun.' Although it's unclear whether Weezer's original guitar riff was directly sampled on 'Island Holiday,' Cuomo is credited as both a composer and lyricist on Tidal. This isn't the first time Lil Wayne and Weezer have crossed paths. The rapper was previously featured on the band's Raditude cut 'Can't Stop Partying,' which was released in 2009. Elsewhere on Tha Carter VI, Lil Wayne also samples classic hip-hop tracks like Noreaga's 'Banned from TV' and LL Cool J's 'Rock the Bells.' Pick up your physical copy of the album here.
