A German doctor suspected of killing several patients is now under investigation
BERLIN — German investigators said Tuesday they were examining the case of a doctor who has been suspected of killing several patients. The public prosecutor's office and criminal police in the northern German town of Itzehoe said in a statement they were 'currently investigating a doctor from the Pinneberg district on initial suspicion of killing several patients, most of them elderly.'

German police said Tuesday they were investigating a doctor suspected of killing several mainly elderly patients, without indicating the number of potential victims. Police and prosecutors in Itzehoe said in a statement they had opened an inquiry into the deaths of the patients. Investigators were 'reviewing previous deaths' linked to the doctor from the town of Pinneberg in northern Germany, just outside Hamburg, they said. 'Several autopsies and exhumations' had already been performed but it was expected to be 'several weeks' before the results of the forensic analysis were available. Authorities said they would not specify the number of potential cases involved in the meantime. But they said the patients were 'mostly elderly.' The allegations recall two other recent cases in Germany, where medical professionals have been charged with killing patients. In April, Berlin prosecutors charged a palliative care doctor with the murder of 15 patients aged between 25 and 94 years old. And in March, a nurse went on trial in Aachen accused of injecting 26 patients with large doses of sedatives or painkillers, resulting in the deaths of nine.

They said they were looking into 'past deaths' and that a special commission had already carried out 'several autopsies and exhumations' as part of the investigation. In line with German privacy rules, the statement did not further identify the doctor from Pinneberg, which is located between Itzehoe and Hamburg, nor did it give any details on the number or identity of the possible victims. 'No details of the number of deaths investigated are currently being provided for reasons of investigative tactics,' the statement said. The investigators said the forensic medical examination and evaluation of the findings were expected to take several weeks. In a different case, a Berlin doctor was charged in April with the killings of 15 patients under palliative care. The doctor was part of a nursing service's end-of-life care team and investigators say they've found evidence linking him to the deaths of 15 people between September 22, 2021, and July 24 last year.
