German authorities investigate doctor suspected of killing elderly patients
Police and prosecutors in Itzehoe said in a statement they had opened an inquiry into the deaths of the patients.
Investigators were 'reviewing previous deaths' linked to the doctor from the town of Pinneberg in northern Germany, just outside Hamburg, they said.
'Several autopsies and exhumations' had already been performed but it was expected to be 'several weeks' before the results of the forensic analysis were available.
Authorities said they would not specify the number of potential cases involved in the meantime. But they said the patients were 'mostly elderly.'
The allegations recall two other recent cases in Germany, where medical professionals have been charged with killing patients.
In April, Berlin prosecutors charged a palliative care doctor with the murder of 15 patients aged between 25 and 94 years old.
And in March, a nurse went on trial in Aachen accused of injecting 26 patients with large doses of sedatives or painkillers, resulting in the deaths of nine.

Yoon was arrested after he tried to impose martial law on December 3, sending troops to parliament to prevent lawmakers from voting down his declaration and plunging the country into political turmoil. He faces a litany of charges, from insurrection to election tampering, but has refused multiple times to appear at his summons. Yoon's legal team said the prosecutors had shown a "disturbing disregard" for "basic human decency". "The special counsel turned what should have been a press briefing into a stage for personal humiliation," Yoon's lawyer Yoo Jeong-hwa told AFP. "What kind of legal institution in a civilized country gives a real-time report and commentary to journalists on a detainee's clothing, especially in a cramped cell nearing 40 degrees (Celsius) (104 degrees Fahrenheit)?" Yoon's lawyers said the former president suffers from "several underlying conditions that pose significant challenges to maintaining his health", making it difficult for him to fully cooperate with the investigation.

South Korean court issues arrest warrant for ex-president Yoon again
SEOUL: A South Korean court on Thursday issued a fresh arrest warrant for former president Yoon Suk Yeol, enabling prosecutors to forcibly bring him in for questioning after he refused to appear at his summons multiple times. The special counsel investigating Yoon and his wife, former first lady Kim Keon Hee, said in a statement that 'an arrest warrant has been issued today for former president Yoon Suk Yeol.' Yoon plunged South Korea into a political crisis when he sought to subvert civilian rule on December 3, sending troops to parliament in a bid to prevent lawmakers voting down his declaration of martial law. He became the first sitting president in the country to be taken into custody when he was detained in January after resisting arrest for weeks, using his presidential security detail to thwart investigators. He was released on procedural grounds in March while his insurrection trial continued, but was detained again early July over concerns he might destroy evidence related to the case. Prosecutors investigating allegations of parliamentary election tampering summoned Yoon for questioning — but he failed to appear, with his lawyers citing health issues.
