Barcelona receive official transfer request from Serie A
La Liga giants Barcelona were on Sunday the recipients of a transfer request by way of Serie A outfit Como. That's according to Football Italia, who have today provided an insight into the situation. Barcelona and Como of course locked horns yesterday evening, in the annual edition of the Joan Gamper Trophy match. When all was said and done, it was the former who emerged on the right side of the result, dominating en route to a 5-0 triumph. Their side's heavy defeat, though, did not discourage the Como brass from sitting down with their Barca counterparts to launch a transfer offensive. This comes amid confirmation that Cesc Fàbregas' side are now actively pushing for the signature of Blaugrana goalkeeper Iñaki Peña. Shot-stopper Peña is for his part widely expected to be on the move before the summer is out, having continued to tumble down the pecking order between the posts in Hansi Flick's squad following the recent arrival of Joan García. Barcelona star's departure set to take ‘longer than expected'
The departure of an out-of-favour member of the first-team ranks at La Liga champions Barcelona is not progressing at the speed which the club had hoped. That's according to , who point towards Iñaki Peña as the player in question. Peña is for his part fresh off something of a difficult campaign in Catalunya's capital in 2024/25. Thrust into a surprisingly prominent role owing to the long-term injury suffered by Marc-André ter Stegen, the 26-year-old, for the most part, went on to impress in Hansi Flick's XI. Before long, however, Peña was forced to watch on from the bench once more, as free agent signing Wojciech Szczęsny usurped the Spaniard in the Blaugrana goalkeeper pecking order. With Szczęsny having since been rewarded by way of a two-year contract extension, and Joan García's arrival from Espanyol long confirmed, it has in turn come as no great surprise to hear of Peña eyeing a new challenge. As alluded to above, however, if the latest word stemming from the Spanish media is anything to go by, then Peña's exit is unlikely to be confirmed any time soon… As per a report from MD: 'Iñaki Peña knows he's not in Flick's plans and that the best course of action is to move on. Barcelona Signs Goalkeeper Joan García From Crosstown Rival Espanyol
Barcelona is signing Espanyol goalkeeper Joan García, who was once linked to a move to Arsenal, to a six-year contract, the Spanish champion said Wednesday. The 24-year-old García recently finished a stellar first season in La Liga when he led all goalies in saves with an average of almost four a game. He will now join Espanyol's main rival. Barcelona said it activated a release clause of 25 million euros ($28.5 million) and that García is expected to sign the contract Friday in a private ceremony at the club offices. The fee could help Espanyol reinforce a squad after it only avoided relegation on the final day of the season. García had been close to a possible move to Arsenal last summer after he helped Spain win Olympic gold in Paris. He stayed put and was Espanyol's best player. García has yet to debut for Spain's senior side, but it is considered only a matter of time before he does if he continues to play well. His arrival to Barcelona puts in question the role of veteran Marc-Andre ter Stegen, who was injured most of the season. He is under contract through 2028. Following Ter Stegen's injury, Barcelona convinced Wojciech Szczęsny to come out of retirement and sign a contract for the remainder of last season. Barcelona's other goalie is Iñaki Peña. While several Barcelona players have joined Espanyol later in their careers, it is rare for an Espanyol player to move to Barcelona. Their derbies are heated affairs.
