Tom Felton was asked for his thoughts about the ongoing controversy surrounding J.K. Rowling, and I can't lie, his response is disappointing. As you know, J.K. has come under fire, particularly for her anti-trans views. Tom, for his part, shared his thoughts tonight at the 78th Tony Awards. When asked how he feels about the current controversy surrounding J.K. and her divisive views, Tom said, "I'm not really that attuned to it." "The only thing I always remind myself is that I'm lucky enough to travel the world," he continued. "Here I am in New York, and I have not seen anything bring the world together more than Potter." Another day, another story on J.K. Rowling 's involvement in HBO's upcoming Harry Potter TV series. At this point, you're well aware that the series itself has become a hotbed of discourse and criticism because the author has spent the majority of her post- Harry Potter career spending time — and money — essentially pushing back against the mere notion of trans rights. The backlash has also reached those who have been announced as the show's cast, to varying degrees. This past week, Paapa Essiedu — who, as of this moment, is booked to portray Severus Snape in the series — was one of many British actors who signed an open letter supporting trans rights in response to the Supreme Court ruling. On Sunday, J.K. seemingly took aim at those who signed the petition on Twitter. 'Some argue that signatories of these sorts of letters are motivated by fear: fear for their careers, of course, but also fear of their co-religionists, who include angry, narcissistic men who threaten and sometimes enact violence on non-believers; back-stabbing colleagues ever ready to report wrongthink,' she said in a very long statement. Obviously, everything that's going on here would cause any passive observer to consider the possibility that, one way or another, Paapa isn't probably long for the Harry Potter world. But this morning, J.K. took to Twitter (again) to confirm that if he does exit the show, it won't be because of her. I don't have the power to sack an actor from the series and I wouldn't exercise it if I did. Unless you have been living under a literal rock, you probably know that the author has spent the majority of her post- Harry Potter career spending time — and money — essentially pushing back against the mere notion of trans rights. As a result, the series itself has become a hotbed of discourse and criticism. Bridgerton star Nicola Coughlan recently took to IG to speak out against the author, the show, and the recent UK Supreme Court's unanimous ruling that a "woman" in equality legislation should be defined as referring to a "biological woman and biological sex." The backlash has also reached those who have been announced as the show's cast, to varying degrees. This past week, Paapa Essiedu — who, as of this moment, is booked to portray Severus Snape in the series — was one of many British actors who signed an open letter supporting trans rights in response to the Supreme Court ruling. On the other side of things, John Lithgow — who is seemingly very committed to portraying Albus Dumbledore for the show — recently gave an interview in which he dismissed the backlash, even after a friend with a trans daughter had reached out to him personally about his decision to star in the show. Another much less surprising person who seemingly doesn't have any issue with J.K.'s involvement is HBO CEO Casey Bloys, who addressed the controversy head-on on a recent episode of The Town podcast. When Casey was asked if he had concerns about J.K.'s comments regarding trans people, he bluntly responded, "No. You know, I've said this before, but the decision to be in business with J.K. Rowling is not new for us. We've been in business for 25 years." "I think it's pretty clear those are her personal political views," he added. "She's entitled to them. And if you want to debate her, you can go on Twitter." Casey also claimed that the upcoming show isn't being "secretly infused" with J.K.'s views in general. "And she's entitled to those views. And I think people are pretty clear that she's entitled to them."

David Tennant Criticized J.K. Rowling's Anti-Trans Behavior
David Tennant directly criticized J.K. Rowling for her anti-trans behavior in a new interview. For context, last year the actor (who played Bartemius Crouch Junior in the fourth Harry Potter movie) accepted an allyship award at the British LGBT Awards. He called out the now-leader of the British Conservative party, Kemi Badenoch, for saying that she wanted to bar trans women from some spaces. In his acceptance speech, he said, "We shouldn't live in a world where that is worth remarking on. However until we wake up and Kemi Badenoch doesn't exist anymore — I don't wish ill of her, I just wish her to shut up — whilst we do live in this world I am honored to receive this.' After his words triggered various comments from Kemi and other politicians, J.K. went on X and shared a post criticizing David, adding, "But the utterances of the Gender Taliban receive special dispensation, for they are a holy caste." Subsequently, when Kemi was voted leader of the Conservative party, J.K. wrote on X, "My thoughts and prayers are with David Tennant at this very difficult time." When David then called anti-trans activists "a tiny bunch of little whinging fuckers who are on the wrong side of history, and they'll all go away soon," J.K. then took to the internet again to reply with a number of tropes about trans people. Fast forward to today, and David took part in a British interview series called The Assembly, where celebs are asked questions by interviewers with autism, learning disabilities, or other forms of neurodivergence. In it, he was asked by a trans person as to what prompted him to become an ally for trans rights. ITV / Via In response, he said, 'When I was a teenager, there was this thing that Mrs Thatcher's government introduced called Section 28, which was about stopping the promotion of homosexuality in school, which was a weird umbrella term, which was basically saying it was illegal to talk about being gay in school, or to suggest that that might be a normal way of behaving." ITV / Via 'We look back on that now as a medieval, absurd thing to try and say, and I think the way the trans community is being demonised and othered is exactly the same. It's become this kind of political football," he added. In a follow-up, he was asked how he felt about J.K. calling him out directly on social media. He replied, ' JK Rowling is a wonderful author who's created brilliant stories, and I wish her no ill will, but I hope that we can all, as a society, just let people be. Just get out of people's way.' His words come as the UK Supreme Court essentially ruled that trans women legally aren't women. J.K. donated tens of thousands of dollars to the cause and later celebrated the win by posting an image on X of her drinking and smoking a cigar, captioned, "I love it when a plan comes together."
