Rape trial: Delhi fast-track courts take 1.5k days, K'taka 910

Bengaluru: The trial that led to former JD(S) Prajwal Revanna's conviction in a rape case was completed in just over 14 months — less than half the time even fast-track courts (FTCs) typically take to conclude similar cases in Karnataka, only one-third of the time taken in Delhi and just over one-fourth of the time taken in Gujarat. In Karnataka, the average duration for rape trials in FTCs is 910 days, it's 1,562 days in Delhi and 1,716 days in Gujarat, as per law ministry data. Prajwal's trial took only around 460 days. Across the country, FTCs show wide variations in how quickly they dispose of rape cases. Among states that reported data, Tripura recorded the longest average time —- 2,097 days per case — followed by Gujarat and Delhi. You Can Also Check: Bengaluru AQI | Weather in Bengaluru | Bank Holidays in Bengaluru | Public Holidays in Bengaluru Manipur also reported a prolonged average of 1,395 days, and Jammu & Kashmir stood at 1,095 days. In contrast, states like Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh showed significantly better performance, with rape trials averaging 365 days in both states. Odisha reported 439 days, Telangana 461 days, and Uttarakhand 508 days, figures closer to the intended expeditious purpose of these courts. Uttar Pradesh averaged 606.4 days per rape case, whereas Kerala, despite a high number of disposals, recorded 999 days, while Punjab and Haryana took 650 and 605 days respectively. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like If you have a mouse, play this game for 1 minute Navy Quest Undo Goa and Jharkhand averaged 730 days each, with Chandigarh marginally slower at 760 days. As per the data available, in Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, West Bengal, Bihar, Assam, and several north-eastern states, either no information on rape trial duration was furnished or it was not reported separately. Arunachal Pradesh and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands did not report any operational FTCs. Against this backdrop, Prajwal's case — the pace at which the SIT gathered evidence, secured cooperation, and moved the case to trial — appears to be a notable exception. As per the ministry, the Centre has pumped over Rs 1,000 crore into these courts since 2019 under the Nirbhaya Fund. Yet systemic delays persist. While the ministry says it has taken steps to boost judicial infrastructure, including expanding courtrooms and housing for judges, and pushing for stricter timelines under the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, actual outcomes still depend heavily on state-level implementation. Several states continue to grapple with unfilled judicial vacancies, under-equipped courtrooms, and logistical hurdles like witness non-cooperation and frequent adjournments. Also, not all rape cases make it to the FTCs, which means the time taken in regular jurisdictionaly lower courts would be much longer. Another dataset for FTCs dealing with cases under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act reveals similarly uneven outcomes. Delhi reported the slowest average trial time at 1,717 days, followed by Manipur at 1,305 days, Nagaland at 1,185, Mizoram at 1,155, and Uttar Pradesh at 1,116.27. Tripura, West Bengal, Assam and Bihar all hovered around or above the 900-day mark, pointing to systemic delays even in child-related offences. In contrast, Puducherry emerged as the quickest, with trials averaging just 180 days. Telangana at 408 days, Madhya Pradesh at 395, and Chhattisgarh at 300 also stayed under the one-year mark. Odisha at 560 days, Punjab at 530, and Haryana at 545 showed moderate pace. Karnataka, despite its large caseload, averaged 724 days, while Kerala disposed of Pocso cases in 594 days on average, and Maharashtra took 575 days. Gujarat reported an average of 869 days. Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Meghalaya reported mid-range durations between 250 and 910 days, while states such as Arunachal Pradesh and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands did not report any figures. Former MP Prajwal Revanna sentenced to life imprisonment in rape case

Former MP and suspended Janata Dal (Secular) (JD(S)) leader Prajwal Revanna gets sentenced to life imprisonment by a Special Court in a rape case on Saturday. The Special Court for MPs/MLAs Judge Santosh Gajanan Bhat also imposed a total fine of ₹10 lakh on the accused. The court had on Friday convicted Revanna in one of the four sexual abuse and rape cases registered against him and reserved the sentencing for Saturday. The case pertains to a 48-year-old woman who was working as domestic help at the family's Gannikada farmhouse in Holenarasipura, Hassan district. She was allegedly raped twice, at the farmhouse in Hassan and at a residence in Bengaluru, in 2021, and the act was recorded by the accused on his mobile phone. According to PTI, Revanna told the court that he had done nothing wrong and that his only mistake was his "fast" rise in politics. He broke down in court as he appealed to the judge for a lesser sentence. He said he is a BE Mechanical graduate and has always passed on merit. "...they say that I have raped multiple women, but none of the women have come out voluntarily to complain, they came six days prior to election (Lok Sabha polls last year)...the prosecution side brought them purposefully and made them give a complaint," Prajwal told the court. Pointing out that the woman (the victim) had not informed anyone, including her husband or relatives, about the alleged rape, he said she came forward with a complaint only after certain videos were circulated. Stating that he will bow down to the court's conviction, Prajwal said, "I have a family, I have not seen my mother and father for six months give me a less sentence is what I request the court." "The only mistake I made in my life is growing fast in politics," Prajwal, arrested in May last year upon his arrival from Germany, told the court.

After Super Court verdict in Muda case, Siddaramaiah demands apology from BJP & JD(S)

Bengaluru: Chief minister Siddaramaiah Monday demanded a public apology from BJP and JD(S) after the Supreme Court upheld the Karnataka high court's decision to quash an Enforcement Directorate (ED) notice issued to his wife BM Parvathi in connection with the Mysore Urban Development Authority (MUDA) site allotment case. "If BJP and JD(S) functionaries have even a shred of dignity and self-respect left, they must immediately offer a public apology," Siddaramaiah said. Siddaramaiah pointed out that besides "continuously making baseless allegations" against him and his family, BJP and JD(S) held a padaytara from Bengaluru to Mysuru seeking an investigation into the case. Siddaramaiah welcomed the Supreme Court's verdict, saying: "The SC's historic order dismissing ED's appeal seeking to investigate my wife, Parvathi, is a resounding blow to the central govt. Throughout my long political career, I have always bowed before the Constitution and the law. The SC has upheld and protected this belief through its verdict." You Can Also Check: Bengaluru AQI | Weather in Bengaluru | Bank Holidays in Bengaluru | Public Holidays in Bengaluru Accusing BJP and JD(S) of "weaponizing" investigative agencies to target him, Siddaramaiah said, "BJP and its ally JD(S), unable to confront me politically, have misused constitutional investigative agencies like CBI and ED to fabricate a false case against my wife. The harassment inflicted through such politically motivated actions is deeply deplorable. I will never forget the mental agony and harassment that my family and I endured because of this. " Siddaramaiah added that the SC's remarks personally resonated with him and reflected a broader sentiment among the public. "What the SC has said truly echoes my view — political battles must be fought using the electorate, not by misusing constitutional agencies like ED," he said. These words reflect the opinion of every conscientious Indian who believes in the Constitution. This verdict has brought peace and restored faith in the judiciary among all those who, over the last 10-11 years, have suffered due to the misuse of the I-T, CBI, and ED by the central govt and BJP in their pursuit of political vendetta. " He added: "After this eye-opening order, PM Modi and Union home minister Amit Shah must wake up and restore the autonomy that these institutions are meant to have and cleanse themselves of their sins."

Tunnel vision sparks turf war between Kumaraswamy, Shivakumar over Bengaluru's future

Bengaluru: The political rivalry between deputy CM DK Shivakumar and Union minister HD Kumaraswamy of JD(S) has spilled into Bengaluru's infrastructure space, as both pitch competing underground road projects to tackle the city's traffic mess. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now While Shivakumar is pushing ahead with his tunnel road project, Kumaraswamy has pitched an alternative: An ultra-modern underground road network (UMURN). Earlier this week, he met Union minister Nitin Gadkari in Delhi to discuss the proposal. He has also proposed support for the Peripheral Ring Road to decongest the central business district. "This transformative infrastructure will serve as the backbone of Bengaluru's future urban mobility," Kumaraswamy said in a memorandum to Gadkari. Both proposals aim to decongest Bengaluru's notorious traffic, improve long-term connectivity, and fuel economic growth. But observers say the duel is as much about political one-upmanship as it is about urban planning, with both vying to be the dominant Vokkaliga face in Karnataka politics. There have been past flashpoints. The row around NICE corridor and the govt's decision to rename Ramanagara district as Bengaluru South were moves widely seen as political signalling. Taking a swipe at Shivakumar's project, Kumaraswamy said, "This 'piecemeal approach' would not solve the gigantic problem of mobility in the city. What we need is a comprehensive mobility solution that is not just futuristic, but also growth-oriented in sync with the city's brand equity as a global destination. The proposed UMURN is scientifically designed and seeks to adopt cutting-edge technology. It is aimed at reducing carbon footprint while ensuring commercial, industrial and economic growth. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now MoRTH minister Gadkari's response to the proposal was positive." This drew a sharp reaction from Shivakumar, who accused Kumaraswamy of trying to create confusion. "Let Kumaraswamy explain the difference between the tunnel road project and this UMURN he is talking about," he said. "Both are underground road infrastructure projects to ensure seamless mobility linking critical points of the city. If he is sincere, then he should ensure central govt funds for Bengaluru's development instead of indulging in gimmicks like this. " Shivakumar said the tunnel road is already at an "advanced stage", with cabinet approval secured in May. "We'll soon invite global tenders for the first phase of 16.7km dubbed the North-South Corridor that links Esteem Mall at Hebbal Junction to Central Silk Board Junction in HSR Layout. The estimated cost is Rs 17,780 crore," he said. BJP, meanwhile, has thrown its weight behind its NDA partner. "We are all along opposed to the tunnel road project on various grounds including its extravagant cost even without being able to scientifically address mobility issues. Let the govt strengthen the public transport system including Metro, which has emerged as the lifeline of the city, before embarking on a misadventure like tunnel road," said PC Mohan, BJP MP from Bengaluru Central. But experts are unconvinced with both plans. YN Yellappa Reddy, former secretary, department of ecology and environment, said: "The city's terrain is predominantly rock, especially Dharwar shilt, an ancient rock formation which is harder than diamond. Blasting it would cause artificial seismic waves. Besides, the project would adversely impact groundwater and vegetation on the surface."

Yathindra: Siddaramaiah will complete five-year term as CM

Mysuru: MLC Yathindra Siddaramaiah, son of CM Siddaramaiah, on Wednesday stated that Congress high command has not given any deadline to his father. He stated that Siddaramaiah will complete a full five-year term. "There is no danger for his CM post. He will complete the term," Yathindra told reporters. He also stated that the Delhi meeting was convened to discuss the deadlock over caste census. "During the discussion, the Bengaluru stampede issue was also discussed," he said. He accused BJP and JD(S) of following double standards while demanding the resignation of CM Siddaramaiah for the stampede. Similar stampedes claimed lives during Kumbh Mela and at Tirupati, but the BJP is silent on both the incidents. However, the Karnataka govt has ordered a judicial investigation into the Bengaluru stampede. "Truth will come after the investigation," he said. "How many leaders have resigned for stampede deaths in BJP and NDA-ruled states? Has the BJP taken any action against those who are responsible?" he asked.
