Rape trial: Delhi fast-track courts take 1.5k days, K'taka 910
In Karnataka, the average duration for rape trials in FTCs is 910 days, it's 1,562 days in Delhi and 1,716 days in Gujarat, as per law ministry data. Prajwal's trial took only around 460 days.
Across the country, FTCs show wide variations in how quickly they dispose of rape cases. Among states that reported data, Tripura recorded the longest average time —- 2,097 days per case — followed by Gujarat and Delhi.

Manipur also reported a prolonged average of 1,395 days, and Jammu & Kashmir stood at 1,095 days.
In contrast, states like Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh showed significantly better performance, with rape trials averaging 365 days in both states. Odisha reported 439 days, Telangana 461 days, and Uttarakhand 508 days, figures closer to the intended expeditious purpose of these courts.
Uttar Pradesh averaged 606.4 days per rape case, whereas Kerala, despite a high number of disposals, recorded 999 days, while Punjab and Haryana took 650 and 605 days respectively.

Goa and Jharkhand averaged 730 days each, with Chandigarh marginally slower at 760 days.
As per the data available, in Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, West Bengal, Bihar, Assam, and several north-eastern states, either no information on rape trial duration was furnished or it was not reported separately. Arunachal Pradesh and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands did not report any operational FTCs.
Against this backdrop, Prajwal's case — the pace at which the SIT gathered evidence, secured cooperation, and moved the case to trial — appears to be a notable exception.
As per the ministry, the Centre has pumped over Rs 1,000 crore into these courts since 2019 under the Nirbhaya Fund. Yet systemic delays persist. While the ministry says it has taken steps to boost judicial infrastructure, including expanding courtrooms and housing for judges, and pushing for stricter timelines under the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, actual outcomes still depend heavily on state-level implementation.
Several states continue to grapple with unfilled judicial vacancies, under-equipped courtrooms, and logistical hurdles like witness non-cooperation and frequent adjournments. Also, not all rape cases make it to the FTCs, which means the time taken in regular jurisdictionaly lower courts would be much longer.
Another dataset for FTCs dealing with cases under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act reveals similarly uneven outcomes.
Delhi reported the slowest average trial time at 1,717 days, followed by Manipur at 1,305 days, Nagaland at 1,185, Mizoram at 1,155, and Uttar Pradesh at 1,116.27. Tripura, West Bengal, Assam and Bihar all hovered around or above the 900-day mark, pointing to systemic delays even in child-related offences.
In contrast, Puducherry emerged as the quickest, with trials averaging just 180 days. Telangana at 408 days, Madhya Pradesh at 395, and Chhattisgarh at 300 also stayed under the one-year mark.
Odisha at 560 days, Punjab at 530, and Haryana at 545 showed moderate pace.
Karnataka, despite its large caseload, averaged 724 days, while Kerala disposed of Pocso cases in 594 days on average, and Maharashtra took 575 days. Gujarat reported an average of 869 days.
Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Meghalaya reported mid-range durations between 250 and 910 days, while states such as Arunachal Pradesh and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands did not report any figures.

Man killed over Rs 200 loan dispute in UP's Gonda, family stages protest
Gonda (UP), Aug 5 (PTI) A 22-year-old newly-married man was allegedly beaten to death over a Rs 200 loan dispute, sparking protests from family members who placed his body on the Gonda-Lucknow highway, police said on Tuesday. The deceased Hriday Lal, a mason from Laxmanpur Jaat village, had lent Rs 700 to a villager, Ram Anuj. A heated argument broke out between them on August 1 when Lal demanded Rs 200 back. The dispute turned violent, and he was allegedly attacked with sticks by Anuj, his brother Ram Kishore, son Jagdish, and nephews Pankaj and Chandan. Lal, who was taken to Lucknow for treatment, succumbed to injuries on Monday. When the body was being brought back from Lucknow in an ambulance on Monday evening, the family tried to block the Gonda-Lucknow highway at Balpur by keeping the body on the road. Police deployed from four local police stations intervened, cleared the blockade using mild force, and ensured the body was taken to the village. Initially, the family refused to conduct the last rites, demanding strict action and 'bulldozer action' on the homes of the accused. The cremation was eventually conducted late Monday night under police supervision, Kotwali Dehat Station House Officer, Sanjay Kumar Singh said, adding all named accused have been arrested and booked under relevant BNS sections. Postmortem was conducted in Lucknow, and further legal action will follow based on the report, he added. Police force has been deployed in the village to maintain peace. Also Read: Anil Ambani faces LoC in ED's Rs 17,000-crore loan fraud probe The agency is expected to summon senior officials of the lending banks over the coming days to examine their credit assessment processes and subsequent actions, people aware of the matter told The Economic Times. Among the lenders are Yes Bank , State Bank of India , Axis Bank , ICICI Bank , HDFC Bank , Bank of India , UCO Bank , and Punjab and Sind Bank . Live Events 'We want to ascertain what action the banks took, if any, against the companies which defaulted. Did they lodge a complaint with any investigating agency, seeking registration of a criminal case against the companies?' a senior official told ET on condition of anonymity. The ED made its first arrest in the case on Friday. Partha Sarathi Biswal, managing director of Odisha-based Biswal Tradelink Pvt Ltd (BTPL), was arrested for allegedly arranging a fake bank guarantee worth ₹68 crore for a Reliance Group company. Also Read: ET Exclusive- ED to question bank officials over Rs 17,000 cr loan fraud linked to Anil Ambani-led Reliance Group 'The investigating officer (IO) from the material and the investigation conducted has formed an opinion that the accused is guilty for the offences of money laundering and effected his arrest accordingly,' a Delhi special court said while remanding Biswal to ED custody till August 6. What is the case against Anil Ambani? According to the ED, BTPL received ₹5.40 crore from Reliance Nu Bess Ltd's parent, Reliance Power Ltd, after submitting a fake bank guarantee with forged SBI endorsements in response to a tender floated by the Solar Energy Corporation of India Ltd (SECI). 'Probe reveals BTPL, a small company incorporated in 2019, maintained multiple undisclosed bank accounts and carried out transactions disproportionate to its declared turnover. Many violations of the Companies Act are found,' the ED said in an official statement. It further said, 'Statutory records such as books of accounts and shareholders' registers were not found at the registered address… Dummy directors are found to be used just to sign the documents.' The agency claimed it had traced proceeds of crime, amounting to several crores, across at least seven undisclosed bank accounts linked to BTPL. While Reliance Nu Bess had initially filed a complaint against BTPL for cheating, the ED suspects collusion. 'Documentary evidence reveals that apparently the two parties acted in collusion. The directors of Biswal Tradelink were found to be previous directors of Reliance Group,' a senior official told ET. In its response, the Reliance Group said on Friday that the company and its subsidiaries acted bonafidely and have been a victim of fraud, forgery and cheating conspiracy. "The company has made due disclosure on this to the stock exchanges on November 7, 2024. A criminal complaint in this regard has already been lodged with the Economic Offences Wing of Delhi Police against the third party on October 16, 2024. The due process of law will follow.'
