Haryanvi singer Meeta Baroda survives firing attack at farmhouse in Sonipat

Rohtak: Popular Haryanvi singer and actor Meeta Baroda escaped a firing attack late Thursday night at his under-construction farmhouse near his native village, Baroda, in Sonipat district. The incident involved an alleged attempt to shoot him by one of his own childhood friends. According to Meeta Baroda, he was at the farmhouse site with a few friends and contractors, planning ongoing construction work. Around 11pm, a car arrived at the site. The accused, identified as Manjeet—also a resident of Baroda village—stepped out and allegedly began hurling abuses. When confronted, Manjeet reportedly fired two shots in the air and then attempted to shoot directly at Meeta. However, due to a misfire, Meeta escaped unhurt. Seizing the moment, he punched Manjeet, disarmed him, and forced him to flee. Meeta then informed the police, who reached the site. Baroda police have confirmed that an FIR was registered against Manjeet under multiple sections, including attempted murder and illegal firing. One pistol was recovered from the scene, while the accused reportedly fled with another weapon. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like This Could Be the Best Time to Trade Gold in 5 Years IC Markets Learn More Undo Police teams are actively searching for him. In his statement to the police, Meeta Baroda said he harboured no personal enmity with Manjeet and was unaware of any specific grudge. However, initial investigation indicates political rivalry from the 2024 Haryana assembly elections as a potential motive. Meeta supported independent candidate Kapoor Singh Narwal after he was denied a Congress ticket from the Baroda constituency. Narwal contested against sitting Congress MLA Induraj. Manjeet, allegedly a supporter of Induraj, reportedly threatened Meeta at the time for singing in favour of Kapoor Narwal. Meeta now fears threats from Manjeet's associates as well and intends to file further complaints. Baroda police station SHO Mahipal Singh confirmed that evidence was collected from the crime scene and the investigation is ongoing. Meeta Baroda is known for Haryanvi songs like "Hawa Kasuti", "MLA Haryanvi", and "Balam Fauji" Recently, Rahul Fazilpuriya, another Haryanvi singer, also faced a gun attack in Gurugram. Rahul contested the election on a JJP ticket in the last assembly polls. MSID:: 122904924 413 |

Jat khaps rally behind Dhankhar, but ‘mentor' Devi Lal's clan divided over shock resignation

Abhay Singh Chautala, Devi Lal's grandson and Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) national president, has termed Dhankhar's resignation as a 'conspiracy' as he had questioned the Centre for not fulfilling its assurances to farmers. It, thus, comes as no surprise that Dhankhar has found sympathy from Devi Lal's clan as well as various Jat khap panchayats in Haryana following his abrupt resignation —after he presided over the first day of the monsoon session in the Rajya Sabha—Monday night on health grounds. Gurugram: In March, then vice president Jagdeep Dhankhar, a Jat from Rajasthan, sang paeans about the late Chaudhary Devi Lal as his mentor. His ascendancy, according to the lawyer-turned-politician, was after the former deputy prime minister advised him to drop the 'p' from 'pleader' and adopt leadership—a turning point that defined his political journey. In December last year, the former vice-president asked Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Chouhan about what happened to the government's promises made to them earlier. Chouhan had spoken before him at the event in Mumbai. Dhankhar, the INLD chief alleged, was 'made to resign' by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Abhay Singh Chautala went live on X on Tuesday, attributing Dhankhar's resignation to his 'interrogation' at the Mumbai event commemorating the Centenary Foundation Day of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Institute for Research on Cotton Technology. — Abhay Singh Chautala (@AbhaySChautala) July 22, 2025 There was a conspiracy by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government to remove Dhankhar because of his farmer-friendly approach, Chautala told The Print Thursday. 'The BJP cannot accept an individual who speaks of farmers and their welfare. Dhankhar ji, who learned politics from Chaudhary Devi Lal, only speaks of the welfare of farmers. He has not resigned voluntarily but has been made to resign by the Modi-Shah leadership,' Chautala alleged. Jannayak Janta Party (JJP) leader Dushyant Chautala, a great-grandson of Devi Lal, termed the resignation as a huge loss for the nation and Haryana. In his brief interaction Wednesday with the media, he dismissed the health-related reason behind Dhankhar's resignation. The actual reasons for resignation would come to light soon, he said. Dushyant had served as the deputy chief minister from 2019 to 2024 when the JJP was part of the BJP-led coalition government in Haryana. The BJP went on to sever its ties with the JJP in March, 2024. Dushyant's father Ajay Singh Chautala recalled his stint as an MLA with Dhankhar in the Rajasthan Assembly between 1993 and 1998. While he was elected from Nohar, Dhankhar represented Kishangarh in the House. 'We do have a familial relationship as well,' Ajay told ThePrint, underscoring the political and personal relationship. Dismissing the 'health narrative', he said even people with 'normal political comprehension' could perceive the reasons for the exit. Dhankhar's departure has disillusioned the people of Haryana, who, he said, identified the veteran as their Jat representative on a high constitutional office. Unlike his family members, Devi Lal's younger son Ranjit Singh presented a nuanced view about the circumstances leading to Dhankhar's resignation. Singh, who contested the 2024 Lok Sabha election from Hisar on a BJP ticket before running as an Independent in the state polls, argued that Dhankhar should have exercised greater caution in his role as vice-president. Criticising the government over its policies for farmers, calling a meeting of former MLAs of all parties in Jaipur last month, and regular meetings with Opposition leaders, were not becoming of a vice president, which is a ceremonial position, Singh told The Print. The holders of high posts such as the President, the Vice President, or the Chief Justice of India usually keep a certain distance from all, something that Dhankhar did not do, he said. The support for the septuagenarian among Jat Khap representatives like Yudhbir Singh Dhankhar, the president of Dhankhar Khap, and Tek Ram Kandela, the head of Kandela Khap, in Haryana is palpable. Yudhbir accused the BJP of orchestrating Dhankhar's exit as part of a 'political game'. 'This party (BJP) is very alienated from this community,' he added, warning that the resignation's consequences would be felt in the future. 'For us, he (Dhankhar) is a Goti Bhai (a brother of the same gotra). His resignation has sparked indignation among all khaps and members of the Jat community. When he was elevated to the post of V-P, he should have been allowed to continue for his full term. The manner in which social media is buzzing with news like the sealing of his office, all this not going down well with the community,' Yudhbir said. Elevated as the vice-president in August 2022, Dhankhar's term was due to end in August 2027. Tek Ram, meanwhile, said that health was just an excuse and not the real reason for the high-profile resignation. Many other Jat leaders echoed this sentiment, noting that Dhankhar's active participation in parliamentary proceedings and his planned programs for the next two days contradicted claims of ill health. The Jat community's reaction is interesting given its complex history with Dhankhar. In December 2023, not many Jat and Khap leaders rallied behind him when opposition MPs mimicked him in Parliament. Back then, Dhankhar construed it as an insult to his community. His alignment with the BJP policies during the 2020-21 farmers' protests had also distanced him from the community. JJP's Dushyant Chautala: ‘I will join the fight in Supreme Court for 75% local quota in private jobs'

2024 was a tumultuous year for Haryana-based Jannayak Janta Party (JJP) and its founder Dushyant Chautala. In March last year, the BJP snapped ties with it just ahead of the Assembly polls. Dushyant, who was the Deputy CM in the outgoing government by virtue of the 10 seats the JJP had won in 2024, saw his party blanked out, with not a single seat and a vote share down to a mere 0.90%. Dushyant has been trying to revamp his party, and has now announced a membership drive. In an interview with The Indian Express, Dushyant says he is confident of the JJP's re-emergence as a force in Haryana, and says he hopes to venture into Rajasthan, Delhi, and Punjab. Excerpts: We are going to every booth across all the 90 Assembly constituencies in Haryana. With an average enrollment of 5,000 new members in each of the 90 constituencies of Haryana, we plan to get at least five lakh new members in this ongoing membership drive. The JJP is also going to launch a mega drive to connect the youth with the party. I made a strong statement against the BJP just yesterday (Thursday). The Chief Minister has failed badly in controlling the deteriorating law and order situation in Haryana. When the CM took over, his slogan was: 'Goonde pardesh chhod do (Gangsters, leave the state)'. Today goonde pradesh mein wapas aa rahe hain (gangsters are now coming back to the state). What happened in Shahbad last week (referring to the murder of a liquor contractor for which gangster Noni Rana claimed responsibility)? The CM was chairing a meeting with the DGP and liquor vendors assuring them safety and security. On the other hand, a liquor contractor was shot dead in full public view. A similar incident happened in Panchkula. Where is the CM? A recent example of inefficiency is the water crisis with Punjab… Mismanagement was the biggest reason behind Haryana not getting its legitimate share of water. Nobody took responsibility. He (Saini) was cracking jokes… At the all-party meeting that was chaired on the matter, I gave him (Saini) the idea of writing to the Centre to get paramilitary forces deployed at the Bhakra Nangal Dam. We have an organisation in Delhi as well as Rajasthan. We have appointed a new party president in Punjab. We have a structure in Uttar Pradesh. We are definitely going beyond Haryana and shall continue our expansion plans. It was a common minimum programme under which the alliance was done (after the 2019 Assembly polls). We (the JJP) were successful in getting our promises implemented by being a part of the government. Be it Panchayati Raj reservations or increasing the social security pension amount… We are still pursuing it. And the matter is now pending in the Supreme Court, so we are legally pursuing it. The next hearing is in November. We shall be requesting the Court to grant regular hearings in the matter. I even met the CM and requested the Solicitor General of India and Haryana Advocate General represent this case. I will personally be filing an application to be made a party in this case. There is no controversy. It is very clear. In 2018 too, I had said that we wanted to put his (Chautala's) picture (on the JJP's posters)… But at that time he was the president of the opposition political party (INLD). Legally, we could not use it. Today, everybody remembers him for his great achievements. Nobody in the JJP has ever said anything bad about him ever. He has always been our guiding force… The airport in Hisar has a very bright future. But the government needs professional people to run it. Until the government does not hire a CEO and other professional players, such plans can not be materialised. If handled well, this area can boom even bigger than Gurugram.

JJP launches drive, aims to add 5,000 new members to each Assembly constituency

In a bid to revive itself politically after a setback in the Haryana Assembly election last year, the Jannayak Janta Party (JJP) on Sunday launched a Statewide membership drive led by its top leadership with the focus on the youth and women. The campaign would continue till July 31. The JJP, junior partner in the previous Bharatiya Janata Party-led Haryana government, had drawn a blank in the Assembly election last year with its vote share reducing from 14.8% to less than 1%. It had 10 MLAs in the previous Vidhan Sabha. Kicking off the party's membership campaign at Jind and Sonipat, former Deputy Chief Minister Dushyant Chautala said the party aimed to recruit 5,000 new members in each of the 90 Assembly constituencies and 25 active members at each booth. In an obvious reference to the party's defeat in the recent election, Mr. Chautala, who had faced the ire of the farmers for not supporting their agitation against the three agriculture laws proposed by the Centre, said ups and downs are part of the political journey, and exhorted the party's cadres to work hard as 'struggle never goes in vain'. The party claimed that thousands of people, including former Indian National Lok Dal general secretary Dilbagh Antil and Congress's Anoop Singh Dahiya along with their supporters, took the JJP's membership on the first day of the drive. Campaign launches The party's general secretary, Digvijay Singh Chautala, launched the membership campaign in Sirsa and Fatehabad. He announced that the JJP will kick off a 'Yuva Jodo Abhiyan' from Kaithal on June 18. Former MLA Naina Singh and former Julana MLA Amarjeet Dhanda launched the party's membership drive programme in Hisar. Ms. Singh said women's participation in JJP had always been special and during this membership campaign the party's women office-bearers and workers would leave no stone unturned. JJP national president Ajay Singh Chautala started the membership campaign in Bhiwani and Dadri and exhorted the party's rank and file to go to every village, city and town of the State to connect people with the JJP and strengthen the party.
