JJP's Dushyant Chautala: ‘I will join the fight in Supreme Court for 75% local quota in private jobs'

Indian Express17-06-2025
2024 was a tumultuous year for Haryana-based Jannayak Janta Party (JJP) and its founder Dushyant Chautala. In March last year, the BJP snapped ties with it just ahead of the Assembly polls. Dushyant, who was the Deputy CM in the outgoing government by virtue of the 10 seats the JJP had won in 2024, saw his party blanked out, with not a single seat and a vote share down to a mere 0.90%.
Dushyant has been trying to revamp his party, and has now announced a membership drive. In an interview with The Indian Express, Dushyant says he is confident of the JJP's re-emergence as a force in Haryana, and says he hopes to venture into Rajasthan, Delhi, and Punjab. Excerpts:
We are going to every booth across all the 90 Assembly constituencies in Haryana. With an average enrollment of 5,000 new members in each of the 90 constituencies of Haryana, we plan to get at least five lakh new members in this ongoing membership drive. The JJP is also going to launch a mega drive to connect the youth with the party.
I made a strong statement against the BJP just yesterday (Thursday). The Chief Minister has failed badly in controlling the deteriorating law and order situation in Haryana. When the CM took over, his slogan was: 'Goonde pardesh chhod do (Gangsters, leave the state)'. Today goonde pradesh mein wapas aa rahe hain (gangsters are now coming back to the state).
What happened in Shahbad last week (referring to the murder of a liquor contractor for which gangster Noni Rana claimed responsibility)? The CM was chairing a meeting with the DGP and liquor vendors assuring them safety and security. On the other hand, a liquor contractor was shot dead in full public view. A similar incident happened in Panchkula. Where is the CM?
A recent example of inefficiency is the water crisis with Punjab… Mismanagement was the biggest reason behind Haryana not getting its legitimate share of water. Nobody took responsibility. He (Saini) was cracking jokes… At the all-party meeting that was chaired on the matter, I gave him (Saini) the idea of writing to the Centre to get paramilitary forces deployed at the Bhakra Nangal Dam.
We have an organisation in Delhi as well as Rajasthan. We have appointed a new party president in Punjab. We have a structure in Uttar Pradesh. We are definitely going beyond Haryana and shall continue our expansion plans.
It was a common minimum programme under which the alliance was done (after the 2019 Assembly polls). We (the JJP) were successful in getting our promises implemented by being a part of the government. Be it Panchayati Raj reservations or increasing the social security pension amount…
We are still pursuing it. And the matter is now pending in the Supreme Court, so we are legally pursuing it. The next hearing is in November. We shall be requesting the Court to grant regular hearings in the matter. I even met the CM and requested the Solicitor General of India and Haryana Advocate General represent this case. I will personally be filing an application to be made a party in this case.
There is no controversy. It is very clear. In 2018 too, I had said that we wanted to put his (Chautala's) picture (on the JJP's posters)… But at that time he was the president of the opposition political party (INLD). Legally, we could not use it. Today, everybody remembers him for his great achievements. Nobody in the JJP has ever said anything bad about him ever. He has always been our guiding force…
The airport in Hisar has a very bright future. But the government needs professional people to run it. Until the government does not hire a CEO and other professional players, such plans can not be materialised. If handled well, this area can boom even bigger than Gurugram.

'Will not give in to nuclear blackmail': India responds to Pak Army Chief Munir's anti-India statements in US

Asim Munir- File image New Delhi: The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Monday issued a strong statement in response to remarks reportedly made by the Pakistani Chief of Army Staff during his visit to the United States. 'Our attention has been drawn to remarks reportedly made by the Pakistani Chief of Army Staff while on a visit to the United States. Nuclear sabre-rattling is Pakistan's stock-in-trade,' the MEA official spokesperson said. The spokesperson added, 'The international community can draw its own conclusions on the irresponsibility inherent in such remarks, which also reinforce the well-held doubts about the integrity of nuclear command and control in a state where the military is hand-in-glove with terrorist groups.' The MEA spokesperson further expressed regret that these remarks were made from the soil of a friendly third country. 'It is also regrettable that these remarks should have been made from the soil of a friendly third country,' the official said. 'India has already made it clear that it will not give in to nuclear blackmail and will continue to take all necessary steps to safeguard its national security, the MEA spokesperson affirmed.' the MEA statement further said. Despite this firm stance, Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir has once again threatened India, warning that Islamabad would plunge the region into nuclear war and could take 'almost half of the world' down if faced with an existential threat in a future conflict with New Delhi. During his ongoing visit to the United States, General Munir also stated that Islamabad will defend its water rights 'at all costs' if India proceeds with dam construction on the Indus River. Munir also repeated his anti-India rhetoric by describing Kashmir as Pakistan's 'jugular vein,' asserting that it is not India's internal matter but an unresolved international issue, Pakistan-based media outlet ARY News reported on Monday. 'We will wait for India to build a dam, and when they do so, we will destroy it,' Munir told members of the Pakistani-American community in Tampa, Florida, according to a report published today in The Dawn. At a black-tie dinner in Washington, DC, hosted by Adnan Asad, Pakistan's honorary consul in Tampa, Munir said the Indus River 'is not the Indians' family property,' adding that Islamabad has 'no shortage of resources to undo the Indian designs to stop the river,' the Dawn reported. ARY News cited Munir as condemning 'Indian aggression under Operation Sindoor,' calling it a grave violation of Pakistan's sovereignty. He also stated, 'A bilateral conflict due to any mistake by India would be a huge blunder.' Munir credited Pakistan's response with successfully preventing a wider conflict and thanked US President Donald Trump for his role in defusing tensions between the two countries. Ahead of the Pahalgam attack, India had strongly rebutted Pakistan Army Chief General Munir's remarks describing Kashmir as Pakistan's 'jugular vein,' calling the claim baseless and asserting that the only relationship Pakistan has with Kashmir is to vacate the territory it occupies illegally. Meanwhile, Munir recently visited two US cities over the weekend and flew to Brussels on Sunday after completing his second high-profile trip to the United States in less than two months. Like his previous visit, he engaged with political and military leadership in the host country, Dawn reported. In Tampa, the Pakistan army chief attended the US Central Command (CENTCOM) change of command ceremony. According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), his engagements included the retirement ceremony of General Michael E. Kurilla, Commander of CENTCOM, and the change of command where Admiral Brad Cooper assumed charge. Dawn quoted ISPR as saying that Field Marshal Munir praised General Kurilla's 'exemplary leadership and invaluable contributions in strengthening Pakistan-US military relations' and expressed confidence that Admiral Cooper 'would take this partnership forward to address shared security challenges.' On the sidelines of the ceremony, Asim Munir met US Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Dan Caine and chiefs of defence from other friendly countries. He invited General Caine to visit Pakistan and reaffirmed Islamabad's role as a key regional security stakeholder, Dawn reported

'No McDonald's and no Coca-Cola': In India, Trump's tariffs spark calls to boycott American goods

New Delhi: From McDonald's and Coca-Cola to Amazon and Apple, US-based multinationals are facing calls for a boycott in India as business executives and Prime Minister Narendra Modi's supporters stoke anti-American sentiment to protest against US the world's most populous nation, is a key market for American brands that have rapidly expanded to target a growing base of affluent consumers, many of whom remain infatuated with international labels seen as symbols of moving up in life. .About 55% of goods exported to US will face Trump tariff: for example, is the biggest market by users for Meta's WhatsApp and Domino's has more restaurants than any other brand in the country. Beverages like Pepsi and Coca-Cola often dominate store shelves, and people still queue up when a new Apple store opens or a Starbucks cafe doles out discounts. Although there was no immediate indication of sales being hit, there's a growing chorus both on social media and offline to buy local and ditch American products after Donald Trump imposed a 50 per cent tariff on goods from India, rattling exporters and damaging ties between New Delhi and Coca-Cola, Amazon and Apple did not immediately respond to Reuters Chowdhary, co-founder of India's Wow Skin Science, took to LinkedIn with a video message urging support for farmers and startups to make "Made in India" a "global obsession," and to learn from South Korea whose food and beauty products are famous worldwide.."We have lined up for products from thousands of miles away. We have proudly spent on brands that we don't own, while our own makers fight for attention in their own country," he Shastry, CEO of India's DriveU, which provides a car driver on call service, wrote on LinkedIn: "India should have its own home-grown Twitter/Google/YouTube/WhatsApp/FB -- like China has." To be fair, Indian retail companies give foreign brands like Starbucks stiff competition in the domestic market, but going global has been a challenge. Indian IT services firms, however, have become deeply entrenched in the global economy, with the likes of TCS and Infosys providing software solutions to clients world Sunday, Modi made a "special appeal" for becoming self-reliant, telling a gathering in Bengaluru that Indian technology companies made products for the world but "now is the time for us to give more priority to India's needs.".He did not name any drag my McPuff into as anti-American protests simmer, Tesla launched its second showroom in India in New Delhi, with Monday's opening attended by Indian commerce ministry officials and US embassy Swadeshi Jagran Manch group, which is linked to Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party, took out small public rallies across India on Sunday, urging people to boycott American brands.."People are now looking at Indian products. It will take some time to fructify," Ashwani Mahajan, the group's co-convenor, told Reuters. "This is a call for nationalism, patriotism.".He also shared with Reuters a table his group is circulating on WhatsApp, listing Indian brands of bath soaps, toothpaste and cold drinks that people could choose over foreign social media, one of the group's campaigns is a graphic titled "Boycott foreign food chains", with logos of McDonald's and many other restaurant Uttar Pradesh, Rajat Gupta, 37, who was dining at a McDonald's in Lucknow on Monday, said he wasn't concerned about the tariff protests and simply enjoyed the 49-rupee ($0.55) coffee he considered good value for money.."Tariffs are a matter of diplomacy and my McPuff, coffee should not be dragged into it," he said.

If Venugopal's aircraft claim untrue, he should face consequences: BJP

Synopsis Following K C Venugopal's claim of a near-tragedy due to another plane on the runway, BJP demands consequences if the allegation is false, citing Air India's denial. Air India clarified that the diversion to Chennai was due to a technical issue and poor weather, with a go-around instructed by ATC, not another aircraft. Agencies KC Venugopal New Delhi: The BJP on Monday cited Air India's denial of Congress leader K C Venugopal's claim that an aircraft carrying MPs, including him, came close to a "tragedy" due to the presence of another plane on Chennai runway to demand that he should face consequences if his allegation is untrue. On Sunday, Air India said the flight AI2455 was diverted to Chennai following a suspected technical issue not because of the presence of another aircraft on the runway. Aviation watchdog DGCA on Monday said Air India's flight from Thiruvananthapuram to Delhi was diverted to Chennai on Sunday evening due to suspected malfunctioning of the weather radar of the aircraft, which landed safely. Tagging Air India's rejoinder and Venugopal's statement on X, BJP IT department headed Amit Malviya said, "This is extremely serious. If senior Congress leader KC Venugopal claims an Air India flight had to abort landing in Chennai because another aircraft was on the runway and the airline immediately contradicts him, then one of them is misrepresenting facts." He added, "Aviation safety is paramount, and social media posts from supposedly responsible people cannot go unscrutinised. If the allegation is true, Chennai ATC and Air India have much to answer for. If not, Mr Venugopal should face consequences, including being put on a no-fly list for spreading falsehoods." Venugopal on Sunday night claimed that an Air India flight carrying him and several other MPs from Thiruvananthapuram to Delhi came "frighteningly close to tragedy". He, several other MPs besides a large number of passengers were on Air India flight AI 2455 from Trivandrum to Delhi, he added. "What began as a delayed departure turned into a harrowing journey. Shortly after take-off, we were hit by unprecedented turbulence. About an hour later, the captain announced a flight signal fault and diverted to Chennai... "For nearly two hours, we circled the airport awaiting clearance to land, until a heart-stopping moment during our first attempt -- another aircraft was reportedly on the same runway. In that split second, the captain's quick decision to pull up saved every life on board. The flight landed safely on the second attempt," he said in the post. Passengers were saved by skill and luck, he said, adding that passenger safety cannot depend on luck. He asked the Directorate General of Civil Aviation and the Civil Aviation Ministry to investigate the incident urgently, fix accountability, and ensure such lapses never happen again. Incidentally, Venugupal as the chairman of the Public Accounts Committee had recently presided over a meeting of different stakeholders in the aviation industry, where members had extensively discussed airline safety, more so, as the deliberations had come in the wake of the Ahmedabad plane crash involving an Air India flight. In a statement, the airline said that Air India flight AI2455, flying from Thiruvananthapuram to Delhi, was diverted to Chennai on Sunday evening due to a technical issue. Responding to Venugopal on X, Air India said, "We would like to clarify that the diversion to Chennai was precautionary due to a suspected technical issue and poor weather conditions." "A go-around was instructed by Chennai ATC (air traffic control) during the first attempted landing at Chennai airport, not because of the presence of another aircraft on the runway... Our pilots are well-trained to handle such situations, and in this case, they followed standard procedures throughout the flight," Air India claimed. "We understand that such an experience can be unsettling and regret the inconvenience the diversion may have caused to you. However, safety is always our priority," the airline added.
