Ask the expert: Can you explain the types of car insurance write-offs?

Dear Alex, My insurer intends to write off my 58,000-mile 2016 Peugeot 3008 following a collision in which most of the front panels require replacement. But otherwise, it's in great shape and very economical, so I have asked them to reconsider. If they decline and offer me cash (enough to cover the repair cost), would it be sensible to get it repaired? If it is, how would I go about it? – JL Dear JL, As long as your car isn't a Category A or B write-off, which means it cannot be put back on the road, the insurer will be quite happy to sell it back to you. They'll then give you the cash insurance payout, less the amount you're paying for the car, then it's yours to keep. If the car is deemed a Category N write-off – the damage is not structural – you can repair it and put it back on the road, although you'll need to notify the DVLA of its Category N status. If your insurer marks the car as a Category S (ie structural) write-off, it will need a new MOT inspection once it's been repaired. You'll also need to apply for a new registration document because your old one will have to be surrendered to your insurer. Might this be worth it? As far as I can tell, you'd have to pay about £8,000 to buy an identical 3008, so, in theory, that's what your insurer should be paying out. However, a Category N write-off will be worth significantly less – at the time of writing, the only one I can see for sale with similar mileage to yours is going for £4,000. Therefore, the remedial work is only worth doing if the cost of the car combined with the cost of the repair is not going to be any more than £4,000. That way, you'll have the remaining £4,000-odd left over from the insurance payout to compensate you for the loss of value on the car. If it's going to cost more, I don't think I'd bother, no matter how nice the car is. There are plenty more Peugeot 3008s out there – it isn't a rare car yet – so it should be relatively easy to take the payout, buy a replacement and save yourself the hassle of getting the repair work done.

WSAV EXCLUSIVE: U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham speaks on golf, Trump, DOGE, tariffs

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (WSAV) — WSAV spoke to South Carolinian U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham Wednesday at the RBC Heritage. WSAV Sports Director Joey Lamar asked Graham about President Donald Trump's first 100 days in office, the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) and tariffs. Listen to the interview or read the transcript below. Joey Lamar: Joined here by U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham from the great state of South Carolina first. First, we'll get you all the golf question. How was it today? How was it playing with Collin Morikawa? Lindsey Graham: He is awesome. So, in the ninth hole, I bet him closest to the pin and somehow won 20 bucks. And I'm not going to tell the IRS, but he's such a nice man, you know, I'm sure he'll do well. JL: All right. Let's get to a little bit more of a serious question. Donald Trump is entering the end of his hundred days. How would you say he's done in his second term in the first hundred days? LG: On the border? A plus. You know, we shut down the border. They said it couldn't be done. He did it. We're set for the tax cuts. But let me just tell you and everybody else listening, if we don't deliver on making the tax cuts permanent, we have nobody to blame but ourselves as Republicans. And I think President Trump will get us over the line. I'm hoping and praying for peace between Ukraine and Russia, an honorable peace. And I worry a lot about where Iran is headed with their nuclear program. So, pray, first of all, this is a dangerous time for the world. So, we'll just keep pushing. JL: Is there anything in the first hundred days that you saw that you think may have could have been better? LG: Well, let's see how the tariffs come out. I think the tariffs are great deal opportunities. I want to make sure that we don't overshoot the runway here. But getting better deals is, I think, possible mow. Whatever you charge us, we're going to charge you, makes sense to me. If you're doing bad things like fentanyl, come into the country, Mexico, we're going to hit you with tariffs, you know, economy wide tariffs. We'll see how that plays out, but all in all, I think President Trump is trying to keep his promises. And one of the promises we made to you is that we're going to cut your taxes and secure your border, and we've got to deliver it. JL: Democrats have criticized Donald Trump about having Elon Musk in the White House and some of the things he's done. How would you rate doge so far as far as cleaning up the government and some of what they call inefficiency in government? LG: You know, we've been talking everybody runs for president says they want to really clean up the budget. What Elon has done with his team is actually do it. This is the first time since I've been up there that somebody is kind of a technological genius, is looking deep into the government and the things they found are pretty astonishing. So, what we'll do is take some of the savings, the wasteful spending, and put it in a package called rescission, and we'll let our Democratic friends vote yes or no. They're criticizing Elon Musk. The question for me is, will they vote to cut the waste that he found? I think some of them will. JL: Is that rescission going to include like a check back to the taxpayers? LG: I don't think so. I don't I don't think will flow it back to the taxpayers as much as try to start bending the debt curve. You know, I'm trying to get, I'm the budget chairman, and my goal is to make the tax cuts permanent. That will create more revenue but save about a $1.5 to 2 trillion out of the current budget. And that will get us on a glide path where we have more revenue and less spending. And my goal is to try and get the budget balanced before President Trump leaves. JL: This is the last one. Now, some of that spending inefficiency has been to government employees and they have laid off some of them. Do you kind of feel bad about that? You know, people losing their jobs? LG: I don't ever wish anybody to lose their job, but we're running, the government is overextended. We're spending too much. The VA is you know, we love the VA, but the VA has grown by like 50% in four or five years. It's time to look at every job in the government and see, is that really necessary? But I don't wish anybody lose their job. But to the American taxpayer, I think you need a more efficient government, and we're trying to deliver that for you. JL: All right. Senator Lindsey Graham, thank you so much for doing this. LG: I have one thing, to the people in the community who put this tournament on, to all the volunteers from South Carolina and Georgia, you make us proud. I've been coming here a lot, but this place is poppin'. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.

This 2023 Midnight Express 43' Solstice Will Make You a Menace on the Water

Do you need a supercar equivalent for the open seas? Perhaps you want the horsepower figures of your garage to carry over to your dockside parking spot. If you fit in either of those two categories, this 2023 Midnight Express 43' Solstice might be calling your name. This luxurious center console, 16,000 lb. behemoth features a class-leading 12'6″ beam and a twin-step hull for reduced drag and superior performance. That latter statistic is helped by its quad 450R Mercury Racing Motors, which can propel you to speeds approaching 85 mph and feature automatic motor flush. With a fuel capacity of 450 gallons and an efficiency of around 1.2 miles per gallon at 40MPH, though, we recommend keeping the closest fuel station in mind if you'll be putting those quad motors to work. This particular example is painted throughout, including the hull bottom and deck, with a black-and-white color scheme accented by neon blue finishes on the motors and hardtop supports. The upholstery has been upgraded with headrests and coaming pads, while foam decking has been applied throughout the cockpit, console, and transom well. Seating is provided by a U-lounge aft seat with storage and a fiberglass base and a forward fiberglass U-seat with an electric fiberglass table. The interior of the console sports the same kind of luxury, with a TV in the cabin, 8000 BTU reverse cycle AC, a 5.0KW Gas Generator with a remote start panel mounted in the cabin, and a 110V distribution panel. Midnight Express didn't skimp on the tech either, with Garmin 8622 Chartplotters, a Depth Sounder, a 4kw HD open array radar, a FLIR System with ~240 degrees of viewing, and a rear-facing camera under the hard top. Even when the quad motors get too loud, your tunes stay audible thanks to the JL sound system with 14 8.8″ speakers in the cockpit, six 12″ subwoofers, amplifiers, two 12″ subwoofers in the second helm seat, two 8.8″ Speakers in the rear U-seat, and four molded-in speakers on the hardtop. The 2023 Midnight Express 43' Solstice delivers one hell of an experience on the waves, ensuring you stay comfy regardless of whether you're cruising or pushing the four motors to their limits. If a party out at sea is more your vibe, the JL sound system and insulated coolers can make that dream a reality, too. This kind of fun doesn't come cheap, though, and this Solstice wears a price tag of $1,150,000. That's a pretty penny, but if you want to make sure that anyone you take out at sea will have an unforgettable experience they'll bring up time and time again, this is one of the best ways to do it.
