Small Snack Business Wins Big With SejaTi MADANI Award In Perak
IPOH, May 24 (Bernama) -- A community-run snack business in Kuala Kangsar, led by a group of women, has claimed the 2024 Sejati Madani Award for Perak, just months after its launch. The Village Development and Security Committee (JPKK) of Kampung Jaya Setia received the state-level honour along with a RM100,000 infrastructure grant and a trophy, presented by Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad. The enterprise, JS Licious, began operations last November under the Sejahtera Komuniti Madani (Sejati Madani) programme. It is now managed by 15 women, many of them housewives and single mothers, producing a variety of traditional snacks. 'Among the favourites are pumpkin chips, ginger crisps, green pea crackers and kuih tiram,' said JPKK chairperson Ebby Shaifullah Yussof. Speaking to reporters at the awards ceremony here today, he said the team plans to use the funds to upgrade their workshop and secure full halal certification for their products. JS Licious currently brings in about RM6,000 in monthly revenue, with earnings rising to RM11,000 during festive seasons. What began as a small local effort has since expanded beyond Perak. Their snacks are now sold nationwide, including in Kelantan, Melaka and Johor, via online platforms such as TikTok Shop and Shopee. 'We're very grateful for this recognition and would like to thank the state government, the district office and the local village head for their support,' said Ebby. The Sejati Madani initiative, part of the Unity Government's push to stimulate local economies, awards eligible communities between RM50,000 and RM100,000 to support grassroots enterprises.

Health, fitness key criteria in appointment of new village chiefs in Perak
IPOH: Health and physical fitness will be key considerations in the appointment of new village chiefs across Perak, beginning June 1. Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad said candidates for leadership roles within the Village Development and Security Committees (JPKK) must be capable of effectively serving their communities over the next two years. He said a comprehensive evaluation process is currently being conducted by State Rural Development, Plantation, Agriculture and Food Industry Committee chairman Datuk Mohd Zolkafly Harun and his team, to assess the performance of all current JPKK chairmen. "Today is May 20, and I want to make it clear that the terms of all 829 village chiefs will end simultaneously on May 31. "A new cycle of appointments begins on June 1, and this time, we are applying stricter selection criteria. "One of the key components of the evaluation is a performance scoring system, in which each candidate must meet a minimum benchmark to qualify for reappointment. "Age, health, and physical fitness will also be considered informally, although no official medical examination is required," he said. Saarani was speaking at the Perak 2024 Prosperous Village Award and Sejati Madani Award ceremony at Bangunan Perak Darul Ridzuan, here, today. Addressing the leadership transition, Saarani called on outgoing village chiefs to act with integrity, particularly concerning land use and financial management. "If, during your term, you generously offered your land for government use, such as for a hall or community facility, please do not withdraw that offer simply because you are no longer in office. "We have encountered cases where former chiefs demanded the removal of buildings from land they had previously offered. Think of the long-term benefits, and the blessings that come from serving your community," he said. Saarani also issued a stern reminder regarding the proper handling of JPKK funds. "Some chiefs have kept committee funds in personal accounts. That money does not belong to you, it belongs to the JPKK. It must be properly handed over to your successor. "Even if you are not reappointed, do not be discouraged. Continue to serve your community by sharing ideas and guiding your successor. This is not about positions, it is about building our state together," he added. For the Perak 2024 Prosperous Village Award, Kampung Telaga Nenas (Manjung) was named the winner, taking home RM10,000, while Kampung Sungai Protan (Kerian) and Kampung Ulu Kuang (Kinta) secured second and third place, winning RM8,000 and RM6,000 respectively. In the Sejati Madani Award category, Kampung Jaya Setia (Kuala Kangsar) took top honours with a prize of RM100,000, while Kampung Sempeneh (Larut Matang Selama) and Kampung Telaga Nenas (Manjung) claimed second and third place, receiving RM70,000 and RM50,000 respectively.

Legal tweaks needed before Child Development Dept can fully stand alone, says Nancy
Nancy undergoes blood pressure checkup during the Santubong Parliamentary Women Empowerment Programme today. – Bernama photo KUCHING (May 10): The establishment of the Child Development Department (JPKK) under the Social Welfare Department (JKM) still requires amendments to several specific laws, said Dato Sri Nancy Shukri. The Minister of Women, Family and Community Development stated that this is to enable the JPKK to operate independently without being tied to other departments. She said in principle, the department is already operating but several child-related laws need to be amended to avoid overlapping with other departments. 'In terms of operations, there is no change, and we are still in the process of recruiting new staff, which is expected to be completed next year. 'Similarly, at present, there are many other laws related to children including the Child Act, the Sexual Offences Against Children Act, and the Criminal Offences involving Children Act,' she added. She made these remarks when met by the media after officiating the Santubong Parliamentary Women Empowerment Programme 2025, organised by the Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA) at Dewan Jamilah, Yayasan Sarawak here today. Commenting further, Nancy, who is also Santubong MP, said the process of amending these laws would take a considerable amount of time and is expected to be completed next year. 'When we want to amend a law, it doesn't take just a day or a month. 'Before submitting a proposal to amend the law, we must review the existing laws and regulations to avoid conflicts with other departments. After that, there will be engagement sessions,' the minister explained. According to Nancy, the JPKK was established on Sept 1, 2023 to replace the Children's Division under JKM. She said the successful establishment of JPKK reflects the government's concern for the safety and welfare of children in the country. child development department JPKK law amendments nancy shukri

Floating market to boost tourism in Sepang's Kampung Labu Lanjut
SEPANG: A floating market will be introduced in Kampung Labu Lanjut here as a unique community tourism product for both domestic and international tourists, with potential to boost the local economy. The floating market concept is one of three economic project proposals submitted by its Village Development and Security Committee (JPKK). Selangor Housing and Culture Committee chairman Datuk Borhan Aman Shah said the introduction of the floating market concept could elevate the state's profile internationally. He said the village's proximity to Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA Terminals 1 and 2) would be an advantage in realising the floating market concept at the location. 'There is potential not just in Sepang, but possibly in the future we may introduce floating markets in northern Selangor as well,' he said. 'Places like Sabak Bernam have rivers in Sekinchan and other areas. So I am confident this effort will have positive economic impacts locally,' he told reporters after launching the MADANI Adopted Village: Kampung Labu Lanjut programme here today. Also present was Datuk Dr Roslan Hussin, the director-general of Akademi Kenegaraan Malaysia under the Prime Minister's Office. Earlier in his speech, Roslan said the selection of Kampung Labu Lanjut as a MADANI Adopted Village by Akademi Kenegaraan Malaysia marked the beginning of a grassroots development initiative. 'The MADANI government has allocated up to RM1 million for each village involved in this programme. 'This is a significant investment reflecting the government's commitment to holistic development encompassing not just physical infrastructure but also social and economic progress as well as human values,' he said. Besides the floating market concept, he said a night market would also be introduced in the village as a micro-economy platform and community trading space. The MADANI Adopted Village programme is part of the government's effort to ensure no community is left behind in national development, through its 'One Leader One Village' approach.

Sejati MADANI: Catfish Farming Project Promises New Economic Opportunities For Residents In Tapah Road
GENERAL TAPAH, 25 April (Bernama) -- A community-driven effort to build 10 cement ponds for a catfish farming project in Kampung Pekan Keci/Kampung Mak Teh is creating promising new economic opportunities for residents. Launched last November with an allocation of RM100,000 under the Sejahtera Komuniti MADANI (Sejati MADANI) programme, the project is expected to generate a five-figure income following its first harvest next month. Chairman of the Village Development and Security Committee (JPKK), Shaiful Haikal Ahmad Sapian, 37, said a total of 50,000 catfish fry have been placed in the ponds in stages since January. 'Catfish was selected because it's a hardy species that's easy to farm and enjoys steady demand in both urban and rural markets,' he told Bernama during a recent visit to the project site in Air Kuning, a small town in the Batang Padang district, which is in the Ayer Kuning state constituency and the Tapah parliamentary constituency. This small town has now become a focal point after the Election Commission (EC) called for the Ayer Kuning state by-election following the death of the incumbent Assemblyman Ishsam Shahruddin last February 22. Polling for the Ayer Kuning by-election is tomorrow. According to Shaiful Haikal, for this inaugural project, each pond uses clean water sourced from the Batang Padand River and organic pellet feed to ensure the catfish remain fresh and free from the usual muddy smell often associated with pond-reared fish. The project is carried out through a gotong-royong (communal work) initiative involving committee members and villagers, who have also been trained in pond management and site maintenance. 'When the first harvest is ready, we plan to distribute the profits into the JPKK fund to support welfare activities and the provision of public facilities in the village. We want everyone in the community to benefit from it,' said Shaiful Haikal, who is a father of two. The project, which has received technical guidance from the Perak Fisheries Department, has attracted the attention of several wholesalers keen to become regular buyers.
