QuickCheck: Was the affluent Bukit Tunku suburb the scene of a shootout?

THE affluent neighbourhood of Bukit Tunku, known for its multi-million ringgit luxury residences, was recently thrust into the spotlight. Reports have emerged that the wealthy Kuala Lumpur suburb became the scene of a dramatic shootout involving police. Did this high-profile incident truly unfold in such a prestigious area? Verdict: TRUE Early on Wednesday (Aug 6), Bukit Tunku was indeed the scene of a shootout between police and a suspect believed to be the mastermind of a robbery and housebreaking gang. Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (CID) acting director Datuk Fadil Marsus revealed that the 36-year-old suspect had a long criminal history, with 44 prior offences including violent crime and drugs. The suspect was also linked to multiple housebreaking and robbery cases across Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, and Perak last year, resulting in losses exceeding RM1mil. He said a team from the Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (JSJ) and the Kuala Lumpur Contingent JSJ, who were conducting crime prevention duties under Ops Api KL 3/2025 in the Bukit Tunku area, spotted the suspect, who was in a luxury car, at about 4.10am on Wednesday. "The suspect acted aggressively when police attempted to intercept the luxury car he was driving for inspection at about 4.10am. "He opened fire at the police, forcing CID officers to return fire in self-defence," he told reporters at the scene, adding that the suspect was fatally shot in the incident. DCP Fadil said further investigation revealed the suspect was using fake number plates on the vehicle. "Checks with the Road Transport Department found no registration records, leading investigators to believe the car may have been smuggled into the country. "We also seized a police vest, a revolver believed to have been used in the shooting, various house break-in tools, and drugs from the vehicle," he said. He added that the gang had been active since last year, targeting private residences - particularly those with safes - and stealing gold bars and cash. "The gang comprises more than a dozen individuals. All CID units in the Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, and Perak contingents have been mobilised to track down the remaining members," he said.

KL police kill suspected burglary gang leader during Bukit Tunku raid

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 6 — Police shot dead a man, believed to be the mastermind of a robbery and housebreaking gang, in an incident on Jalan Bukit Tunku, here early today. Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (CID) acting director Datuk Fadil Marsus said the 36-year-old man, with 44 criminal records including drug cases, was believed to be responsible for several housebreaking and robbery cases reported in Kuala Lumpur, Selangor and Perak since last year, involving losses of more than RM1 million. He said a team from the Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (JSJ) and the Kuala Lumpur Contingent JSJ, who were conducting crime prevention duties under Op Api KL 3/2025 in the Bukit Tunku area, spotted the suspect, who was in a BMW car, at about 4.10 am today. 'During an attempt to intercept the (BMW) car, a shootout occurred, resulting in the suspect being killed at the scene. Several gunshots also struck the police vehicle,' he said. A search of the suspect's car uncovered a revolver, various burglary tools, and a police vest, he told a press conference held at the scene. Fadil said checks on the BMW car found it was using a fake registration number and was believed to have been smuggled in from abroad. Elaborating further, he said investigations showed that the gang targeted homes and business premises with safes, gold bars, and cash, and were believed to have posed as police officers. 'We believe the gang is also linked to a drug trafficking syndicate and may have dozens of members. Efforts to track down the remaining individuals are ongoing,' he said. — Bernama

Kedah crime drops nearly 17% in first half of 2025

BALING: Kedah recorded a 16.9 per cent decline in crime cases during the first six months of 2025 compared to the same period last year, according to state police chief CP Adzli Abu Shah. He said a total of 148,929 police reports were lodged between January and June this year, with 9,426 of them involving criminal elements referred to the Criminal Investigation Department (JSJ). 'This marks a decrease of 1,921 cases, compared to 11,347 criminal cases reported from 139,614 reports in the corresponding period last year. It reflects a reduction in crime within the Kedah contingent,' he said at the launch of the 2025 Kedah Contingent AMANITA Community Park Adoption Programme in Kuala Ketil today. Among the key offences showing a downward trend were robbery involving accomplices, which fell 19.7 per cent from 66 to 53 cases. Rape cases dropped from 80 to 60, house break-ins declined from 594 to 534, motorcycle theft fell from 446 to 348, while car theft decreased from 88 to 79. Separately, Adzli said an investigation paper has been opened under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 following a recent accident involving a police officer in Yan, which went viral on social media. He said the case is also being probed by the Integrity and Standards Compliance Department (JIPS), with Yan police chief having instructed to expedite the investigation. The incident, which occurred on July 28, involved a Perodua Alza driven by a police officer who allegedly ran a red light and collided with a Yamaha LC motorcycle ridden by 16-year-old Muhammad Nur Iman Danish Mohd Roshidi at a traffic junction in Guar Chempedak. The teenager, who sustained critical injuries, died three days later at Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital in Alor Setar. - Bernama

Wanted Indian drug kingpin deported after arrest in KL hotel

KUALA LUMPUR: Police have arrested an Indian national suspected of being the notorious drug kingpin of a transnational syndicate who is wanted by his country's government while hiding in a hotel in the capital here on May 13. Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Razarudin Husain said the 30-year-old man was arrested by a team from the Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (JSJ) together with the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department (JSJN) when he was located in a hotel room at 1.35 am. He said checks found that the man was believed to have been in the country since early this year on a tourist pass. 'Further investigations found that the man had no involvement in drug trafficking activities in Malaysia. 'However, further action and intelligence are being actively carried out by the JSJN to identify if the man has a network or is involved in secret society activities in Malaysia,' he said when contacted here today. Following that, Razarudin said the foreign national, who was listed as a wanted individual or fugitive by the Indian government, was deported to his country on a flight at 6.54 pm on Tuesday (May 27). The 'Indian Express' newspaper reported earlier (on May 28) that the drug kingpin of an international drug syndicate was arrested by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) of India after being extradited from Malaysia. The international syndicate led by the man is believed to be carrying out drug smuggling worth 1,128 crore (RM635 million) including cocaine and marijuana obtained from the United States through cargo shipments.
