Key roads, circles in Ranchi to get facelift

Ranchi: The state urban development and housing department has drafted a Rs 38 crore beautification plan to upgrade key roads and chowks in Ranchi. To be carried out by Jharkhand Urban Infrastructure Development Company Limited (JUIDCO), the project aims to enhance urban aesthetics and ease traffic flow in the state capital. A detailed project report (DPR) for the project has been submitted by the consulting agencies, officials said. "The DPR is under technical scrutiny. Once cleared, it will be sent to chief minister Hemant Soren for final approval. The tender process will then begin. The whole process may take two to three months," said Juidco PRO Ashutosh Singh. The phase one of the project will focus on Airport to Hinoo (Rs 14 crore), Hinoo to Birsa Chowk (Rs 9.6 crore), and Albert Ekka Chowk to Kutchery Chowk (Rs 8.49 crore) and will include road widening, stormwater drainage systems, pedestrian-friendly footpaths, utility ducting, tree plantations, decorative streetlights, and modernization of traffic roundabouts. A sum of 1.78 crore will be spent on the beautification of Hinoo Chowk and its roundabout, while Rs 4.23 crore has been allotted for the development of Birsa Chowk and its traffic circle. "Currently, the Birsa Chowk roundabout spans about 12 square meters. We plan to expand it to 22 square meters to improve visibility and traffic flow," added Singh. The Kutchery area, will be developed with integrated urban design, involving cable management in collaboration with the energy department, shaded walkways, and green landscaping.

Built for 22 cr, Morabadi stage to be razed over design flaws

Ranchi: The Morabadi Ground stage , built in 2019 as part of a Rs 22 crore urban development project by the Jharkhand Urban Infrastructure Development Company ( JUIDCO ), is set to be dismantled following critical design flaws flagged during a recent inspection on Feb 27 by the district administration. Although the entire development aimed to modernise the space for public and ceremonial events, the stage, which was the only completed component, proved inadequate for large gatherings and state functions. The decision has triggered a political controversy, with the opposition accusing the govt of destroying state assets created during BJP tenures. Though the JUIDCO project was envisioned as a multi-use plaza for large-scale public functions, only the stage was completed. The structure, measuring 75 ft by 40 ft and featuring a tensile canopy, 11 LED screens, and Gobo lights, has proven inadequate for key events like R-Day and Independence Day. The inspection found that the canopy and its pillars obstruct visibility and the 9 ft elevation fails to ensure clear line of sight for attendees. Further, the static design prevents expansion, often forcing the administration to install temporary stages up to 72 ft ahead of the current platform, compromising space and event layout. "Based on inspection findings, it was decided that the current stage and canopy would be dismantled. Temporary, functional structures suited to individual events will replace it. Large public programmes typically require stage lengths of 80 to 180 ft, which this setup does not support," said Ranchi DC Manjunath Bhajantri. BJP's state spokesperson Pratul Shahdeo lashed out at the Hemant Soren-led govt, saying, "Why demolish a multi-purpose stage that served Republic Day, Independence Day, and several historic rallies, including two of Hemant Soren's own oath-taking ceremonies? Was this decision driven by any public demand or simply an attempt to erase BJP-era contributions?" He accused the govt of wasteful spending, especially when departments claim a lack of funds for essential schemes. Shahdeo added, "This stage was also a platform for local artists. Now the govt, instead of preserving such infrastructure, is arbitrarily tearing it down." According to the officials, future makeshift stage structures will prioritise visibility, modularity, and audience capacity to meet modern event demands.

Ranchi, Jamshedpur to get state-of-art bus terminals

Ranchi: Urban development and housing department secretary Sunil Kumar chaired a review meeting on Tuesday to assess the progress of major infrastructure projects in Ranchi and Jamshedpur. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Two state-of-art inter-state bus terminuses (ISBT), to be developed by the Jharkhand Urban Infrastructure Development Company (JUIDCO) , are proposed at an estimated cost of Rs 180.45 crore in Ranchi and Rs 150 crore in Jamshedpur. At the meeting, Kumar reviewed the designs submitted by the consultancy firm and instructed officials to explore construction under public-private partnership (PPP), hybrid annuity model (HAM), and engineering procurement and construction (EPC) modes. "The goal is to ensure ease of transport for citizens with modern and well-equipped terminals. Whichever model best ensures quality and timely delivery will be considered," Kumar said. In Ranchi, the ISBT will span 33.51 acres and include 14 alighting bays, 21 intercity, 18 interstate, and 15 intracity bus bays, along with parking for over 1,300 vehicles. Jamshedpur's ISBT will be developed over 10.7 acres with similar modern facilities, including food courts, waiting lounges, and workshops. Kumar said 60% of land at both terminals should remain open, with planned landscaping and tree plantations. "The terminals must include high-quality waiting areas and all essential passenger amenities," he added. For the Ranchi water supply project , Kumar emphasised speedy completion of the ongoing 213 million litres per day (MLD) water treatment plant (WTP) at Rukka and the laying of clear rising main pipelines. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Under the multi-phase plan, Ranchi will be supplied water through 129 km of new pipelines. Phase 1 involves 21.08 km, phase 2A includes 63.93 km, and phase 2B covers 44.12 km. So far, 75 km is complete. The WTP at Rukka will cater to the growing demand of the city and ensure round-the-clock water supply.
