Steele Sidebottom embarrasses former teammate Jack Ginnivan

Collingwood's Steele Sidebottom played a key role as the Pies continued their stellar season with a dominant 51-point victory over Hawthorn. The clash at the MCG was made even more tantalising with Jack Ginnivan going up against his old teammates. But in the third quarter it was Sidebottom who stole the limelight as he embarrassed his former teammate. After Isaac Quaynor took an intercepting mark on the back flank, he fed the ball out to Sidebottom with miles of empty space in front of him. The 34-year-old took off down the wing as Ginnivan attempted to apply the pressure by giving chase. The 22-year-old however could do nothing as Sidebottom shuffled towards the Pies forward 50, rubbing salt into the wounds by taking four bounces on his way. Sidebottom ended the contest with 27 disposals and two goals and couldn't help poke fun at Ginnivan during a post-game interview. Talking with Cameron Mooney, the Pies veteran was asked about the last time he took that many bounces down the wing of the MCG. Sidebottom didn't hesitate in burning the Hawthorn forward. 'I was lucky Ginni was chasing me,' Sidebottom said. 'I don't think I ever have to be honest so yeah it was nice.' While Sidebottom was the top ranked player on the ground, teammate Nick Daicos broke a long running hoodoo on Friday night. Despite his illustrious career in the league, Daicos had never taken a contested mark … that all changed against Hawthorn. After a ball up following a goal from Hawk James Worpel, Sidebottom took possession and wheeled around, spotting Daicos in the middle of the ground. Daicos had a small gap to his opponent, coincidentally Worpel again, and took the mark right as the Hawthorn star made body contact and tried to spoil. While there were some doubts over its authenticity, the moment appeared as a stat on the live scores and was immediately noted by the commentary team on Channel 7. 'That looked like a contested mark to me,' Matthew Richardson said. James Brayshaw replied excitedly: 'I think it is. Is that the numero uno?'

AFL news 2025: Latest updates, injury lists, Alix Tauru, Paul Curtis tackle

While Paul Curtis faces the impossible task of overturning his three-game ban, a Saint has copped an even greater suspension. Plus the MRO's verdict on a Blues gun and Jack Ginnivan here. Carlton midfielder Adam Cerra has been handed a one-match ban for striking Geelong's Jack Bowes during the Blues' 18-point win at the MCG on Sunday. Cerra's right hand appeared to collect Bowes in the head as the pair tussled during a ball-up in the third quarter, with the Cats midfielder falling to the ground grabbing at his face following the incident. Match review officer Michael Christian graded the incident as intentional conduct, low impact and high contact. Carlton can accept the one-match ban or choose to challenge at the AFL tribunal on Tuesday. The Blues are already set to lose Jack Silvagni (broken hand) and Zac Williams (calf) to injury ahead of Saturday's trip to Adelaide to face the Crows. — AFL (@AFL) April 28, 2025 A further four players from the Blues-Cats clash were handed fines. George Hewett ($5000), Jeremy Cameron and Silvagni ($1500) were all ruled to have made careless contact with an umpire and offered fixed financial sanctions. Carlton forward Lachie Fogarty was offered a $3000 fine for tripping Geelong's Max Holmes during the second quarter. Meanwhile, Hawthorn forward Jack Ginnivan has escaped suspension for his kick at West Coast's Jack Graham during the first quarter of Sunday's match at Marvel Stadium. Vision which circulated on social media on Sunday showed Ginnivan lashing out at Graham while on the ground, appearing to first make contact with the Eagles midfielder's groin region and then his leg. The MRO graded the offence as intentional conduct, low impact and body contact. The 22-year-old was instead slapped with a $6250 fine, which can be brought down to $3750 with an early plea. It is the second cited kicking offence of Ginnivan's career. Eagles midfielder Liam Baker was also fined $1500 for misconduct. SAINT COPS HUGE BAN AS CURTIS PREPARES FOR 'IMPOSSIBLE' TASK Paul Curtis faces an impossibly high bar to overturn a three-match ban at the tribunal on Tuesday night given the judiciary's own explanation of its shock Patrick Dangerfield verdict last year. It comes as St Kilda's young top 10 pick Alix Tauru has been hit with a four-week VFL suspension that will deny him the chance to make his AFL debut this weekend. The AFL world has hit out at the suspension that will see Curtis sidelined after he pinned the arms of opponent Josh Sinn in a tackle that saw the Port Adelaide defender concussed. Curtis will appeal the verdict and hope to be available for games against North Melbourne, Brisbane and Richmond as he continues a hot start to the season. Sinn pitched forward at the waist and made heavy contact with the Adelaide Oval turf. But while Curtis might feel hard done by, he pinned both of Sinn's arms and put him in a vulnerable position. Dangerfield was initially suspended for a week for a tackle last year that saw him pin both of Sam Walsh's arms as the Carlton star's head hit the ground. But he was able to overturn the verdict after he successfully argued he swung his legs forward of Walsh and pulled back with what the tribunal labelled 'considerable force' to try to minimise head-high contact. In that case, the tribunal set a standard for what it deems rough conduct from dangerous tackles. Tribunal head Jeff Gleeson said of rough conduct: 'It will be a rare, even exceptional case where a player who tackles with significant forward motion, who pins both arms and who could have but does not release one or both arms will not have engaged in rough conduct. This is such a case.' So while Dangerfield was able to escape suspension, it is hard to see how Curtis will have his three-match ban overturned given he has met that standard with a pinned-arm tackle with significant forward motion. He did not try to roll Sinn even in the split second he had before his head hit the ground and he did not release one of his arms. In 2023 Dan Butler was also able to overturn suspension because he made the decision to release opponent Nick Blakey's arm just before his head hit the turf. So Curtis will argue his case, aware of how challenging it will be to convince the tribunal of his innocence. Under the AFL match review table of offences, Sinn's concussion meant Curtis had to be suspended for three weeks once he committed a reportable act. West Coast midfielder Liam Baker is also facing a misconduct fine after he tore off the headband of Hawthorn forward Mabior Chol in the first quarter on Sunday. In 2022 Hawthorn star James Sicily was fined $1000 for misconduct after he tore off Aaron Naughton's headband so there is a direct precedent for the AFL. Young Saint Tauru could be out of all action until mid-June given Sandringham has a VFL bye this week and then the week he would return in round 11, meaning his next VFL game would be on the weekend of June 13-14. He was taken at pick 10 in the national draft and had built imposing form in recent weeks after working his way back from a stress fracture. The 194cm defender jumped off the ground to hit Brisbane player Curtis McCarthy, brother of Lions player Lincoln, with a high bump to the head. It was a brutal hit from Tauru given he did not make a play on the ball. The VFL tribunal judged the severe impact hit was worth four or more games, but under their system he can accept four games with an early discount. It is shocking timing given the Saints would have been keen to hand him a debut as early as this weekend against Fremantle. The player dubbed the Flying Viking had won 17 possessions in his third VFL game of the season as well as eight marks, two intercept marks, five tackles and five spoils. Jack Ginnivan hints at Port Adelaide salute as 'feral' grudge match ready to explode

Hawthorn's Jack Ginnivan has hinted he might have a special celebration up his sleeve ahead of the grudge match against Port Adelaide this weekend as Ken Hinkley attempted to play down the rivalry. Last year, Port Adelaide sent Hawthorn crashing out of AFL finals winning by three points in an instant classic. Port Adelaide coach Hinkley then caused a stir when he celebrated with an aeroplane gesture aimed at Ginnivan after the game. The taunt - suggesting the Melbourne-based team would be flying home as losers - was in response to Ginnivan who had riled the Port Adelaide fan base up ahead of the game on social media. Hinkley was fined $20,000 for his actions with the AFL community divided over whether the coach should have got involved in the controversy. And Gather Round will see the Hawks face the Power for the first time since the incident marred the semi-final. And it appears Ginnivan is going to lap up the attention around the clash. Speaking ahead of the game, Ginnivan suggested the players aren't buying into the frenzy too much as his team looks to continue their undefeated start to the season. 'I don't think so,' Ginnivan said on Channel 9's Gather Round Barossa special. 'We've started the season so well, and it's pretty obvious that the AFL put it last (in Gather Round). I'm sure they're going to use it to promote the game as much as possible. For us it's another game and we're just excited to play whoever comes our way and hopefully keep the season rolling.' While Ginnivan is treating the clash as any other contest, the 22-year-old has never shied away when given the opportunity to taunt rival fans. Last year, Ginnivan mocked his former team when he gestured to Collingwood their season was over. Known for his provocative celebrations, Ginnivan admitted he might have a special 'aeroplane' taunt in his back pocket if he scores a goal on the weekend. 'You'll have to wait to see if I kick one,' he added. 'But I'm sure I'm going to have it in the back pocket.' Ginnivan's sentiment around the clash echoed that of Port Adelaide's coach. Could we see an aeroplane celebration from Jack Ginnivan if he kicks a goal against the Power? 🍿#GatherRoundBarossa | Watch on Nine & 9Now 🖥️ — Footy on Nine (@FootyonNine) April 8, 2025 While Ginnivan and Hinkley have talked down the grudge match, the feeling around town is different. Speaking on Fox Sports Midweek Tackle, reporter Jon Ralph suggested the anomisty between fans and players remains quite high. 'Tension is an understatement,' Ralph claimed on the show. 'It's supposed to have a carnival atmosphere, Gather Round. It's supposed to be so festive. But you know what? There's almost this feral undertone. 'Eight months on, Port Adelaide is still seething with injustice about that $20,000 fine to Ken Hinkley after the aeroplane stuff with Jack Ginnivan. 'We've done the deep dive. A former Adelaide player in Steven Rowe … he said: 'In other states, there's a different set of rules to what happens in South Australia. When it is the Crows or Port Adelaide, we always seem to get screwed by the AFL'. 'Sunday night will crackle with tension. The Hawks … they're still filthy, they're still remembering what Ken did. Don't worry, the players haven't forgotten what Ken did. A Hawks insider told me Jack Ginnivan has already suggested he might have a special salute or something if they win, and there's an entirely bizarre post-script that could occur.' AFL great Garry Lyon also claimed he is feeling the tense build-up. 'That rivalry between Hawthorn and Port Adelaide - don't listen to the players, don't listen to the coaches, don't listen to everyone who is talking it down - that rivalry is alive and well,' Lyon said ahead of the clash. 'It is going to be a great finale to what I hope is a magnificent Gather Round here in Adelaide.' Hinkley was in the thick of it last year having overshadowed his team's thrilling win with his 'aeroplane' taunt at the end of the game. And while the AFL will most likely use the footage of the post-match scenes to build-up hype around the clash, Hinkley admitted he doesn't need to talk to his players about staying grounded. 'I had no need to speak to them, and I'm sure they didn't really want to speak to me,' he said. 'I said what I said at the end of last year's game, emotions boiled over. I was disappointed in that in myself, I've said that. 'I've apologised publicly. It's time to move on, for me, and I've got to focus on my performance this week.' Hawthorn are flying high in 2025 having won all four of their games with the midfield proving to be the difference.
