Arizona Cardinals 53-man roster projections after 2nd preseason game
A new set of roster projections for the 53-man roster, with new information and injuries to consider. The Arizona Cardinals are just over a week away from having to cut their roster down to 53 players. They have played two preseason games and will play their preseason finale Saturday night at State Farm Stadium against the Las Vegas Raiders. We know just a little bit more about the players and who might and might not make the roster. As we enter the final week of the preseason, here are my latest roster projections for the 53-man roster. Arizona Cardinals 53-man roster projections after 2 preseason games Quarterback: Kyler Murray, Jacoby Brissett This is easy. They will only keep two quarterbacks, so Clayton Tune will get cut. The only question is whether they will re-sign him to the practice squad or bring in another for that spot. Running back: James Conner, Trey Benson, Emari Demercado, DeeJay Dallas This isn't changing unless someone gets hurt. Michael Carter is on the outside looking in again. Why? He isn't as good as Benson to be featured in the offense. He isn't going to be the kick returner that Dallas will be. He isn't as good on special teams or on third down as Dallas or Demercado. Wide receiver: Marvin Harrison Jr., Michael Wilson, Zay Jones, Greg Dortch, Simi Feohoko, Xavier Weaver Weaver is a bubble guy here. Fehoko showed enough to make the team. The TV broadcast said multiple times in both preseason games how good he is on special teams (although he only has 208 career snaps on special teams), which I think is something pushing the narrative that he is going on be on the team. Tight ends: Trey McBride, Tip Reiman, Elijah Higgins, Travis Vokolek The Cardinals might need to bump Vokolek off if they need a 10th offensive lineman like Conner or Jones initially, or if they need another center. Offensive line: Paris Johnson, Evan Brown, Hjalte Froholdt, Isaiah Adams, Jonah Williams, Kelvin Beachum, Nick Leverett, Jon Gaines, Josh Fryar As I see things right now, Will Hernandez will start the season on PUP, and both Christian Jones and Hayden Conner will start on injured reserve. The team can designate two players to return from IR even if they land on there before the final 53 is set. But with those injuries, Fryar makes the active roster, although he will be inactive on game days. Royce Newman not getting into the game on Saturday until late suggests he isn't in their plans for the season. Defensive line: Calais Campbell, Dalvin Tomlinson, Darius Robinson, Justin Jones, Dante Stills, L.J. Collier I still think Walter Nolen and Bilal Nichols will still start the year on PUP. That gives Collier a roster spot for now. Jones' knee injury is one to watch, though. P.J. Mustipher could sneak onto the roster as well. Outside linebacker: Josh Sweat, Zaven Collins, Baron Browning, Jordan Burch, BJ Ojulari Ojulari is puzzling, honestly. He should already be practicing by most timelines, but he isn't. If he doesn't come off PUP, then Xavier Thomas will make it. Inside linebacker: Mack Wilson, Akeem Davis-Gaither, Cody Simon, Owen Pappoe People don't want to see Pappoe on here, but it will likely come down to him and Mykal Walker. Both give special teams upside, but the youth and athleticism of Pappoe win out. Cornerback: Garrett Williams, Max Melton, Will Johnson, Denzel Burke, Kei'Trel Clark Darren Hall could make this over Clark, especially with his ability to play safety and nickel, but Clark can also play nickel and some safety. Clark is a guy Jonathan Gannon really likes. Safety: Budda Baker, Jalen Thompson, Dadrion Taylor-Demerson, Joey Blount, Kitan Crawford They normally would only keep four safeties, but they will figure things out with Blount and Crawford. This group is all set. Get more Cardinals and NFL coverage from Cards Wire's Jess Root and others by listening to the latest on the Rise Up, See Red podcast. Broncos 27, Cardinals 7: Takeaways from offensive performance on offense
The Arizona Cardinals played their second preseason game Saturday night, and it was not a pretty game. They were blown out by the Denver Broncos 27-7. It wasn't a good game on either side of the ball. Offensively, it was bad. What can we take away from the offensive performance? Feels good with Jacoby Brissett For the second straight game, new Cardinals backup Jacoby Brissett impressed. This time, he played only two drives in the first quarter. The first one went only six yards in five plays, picking up a first down, but he led the Cardinals to another touchdown, throwing a beautiful pass to receiver Simi Fehoko for the score. He was 6-of-8 passing for 57 yards and a touchdown, and he picked up a first down on a two-yard quarterback sneak. It gives fans comfort knowing that there is a capable, even competent, backup behind Kyler Murray. However, we must also remember that the five possessions he has played in two preseason games, while three have results in touchdowns, they were all against their opponents' backups. The offensive numbers are just bad The Cardinals gained only 135 yards of offense the entire night. They had only eight first downs. If you take away Brissett's two possessions, quarterback Clayton Tune led the Cardinals on eight drives that netted 62 yards and three first downs. They went three-and-out five times. There was no running game Now, the Cardinals didn't play their starters, so no starting offensive line and no James Conner or Trey Benson. But even still, they gained only 36 yards on 17 carries. At least there were no turnovers If there was one bright side to the Cardinals' abysmal offensive night was the fact that they did not turn the ball over. They didn't fumble at all and no interceptions were thrown, so at least it was a turnover-free game. 3 Arizona Cardinals players who improved their stock in preseason loss to the Broncos
The Arizona Cardinals lost their second preseason game Saturday night, a 27-7 defeat to the Denver Broncos in which they allowed 562 yards and only gained 135. They didn't play any of their starters expect for rookie cornerback Will Johnson and new linebacker Akeem Davis-Gaither. There weren't a lot of positives, but a few players helped their stock as we approach final cuts and the 53-man roster. Which players stood out? QB Jacoby Brissett Brissett doesn't have any worry about making the roster, as he has the backiup quarterback job locked up. However, he led the Cardinals to another touchdown, giving him three touchdown passes in five preseason possessions. They have come against opponent backups, but the ease with which he operates the offense and moved the ball down the field, there is confidence that the offense will be okay should Kyler Murray ever get hurt. WR Simi Fehoko Fehoko had his first preseason action, missing last week's game with a quad injury. He had two receptions for 21 yards, including a 16-yard touchdown reception. He also made a special teams tackle. He is a player most fans won't know, but the TV broadcast emphasized he is good on special teams. He showed enough to probably secure a spot on the roster, especially considering he ha almost all his salary guaranteed in 2025. K Chad Ryland He only had the one extra point and did not have a field-goal attempt, But before the game, he drilled a 72-yard field goal. There is no issue with his leg. That was about it. It was mostly players hurting themselves. Get more Cardinals and NFL coverage from Cards Wire's Jess Root and others by listening to the latest on the Rise Up, See Red podcast. How to watch 4 NFL preseason games live on NFL Network
The Arizona Cardinals have their second preseason game of the year Saturday night and face the Denver Broncos. It will be a battle of backups, as the two teams held a joint practice on Thursday and both have decided to sit their starters, so it will be a first-half battle between Cardinals quarterback Jacoby Brissett and Broncos quarterback Jarrett Stidham. The game, while it will be on television locally on Arizona's Family CBS 5 and have Dave Pasch and Sam Acho calling the game, it is also part of the preseason live coverage on NFL Network. It is the final of four games that will air live. So, before your Saturday night watching the Cardinals, you can also get in a lot of preseason football on a Saturday (almost as if you are getting warmed for the college football season). Here is the NFL Network TV coverage of live preseason games. How to watch NFL preseason games live on NFL Network on Saturday NFL Network will air four live preseason games. However, they are not national broadcasts. The games will not have NFL Network broadcasters. They will carry the home team's TV broadcast, so you will hear the hom teams' broadcast team. Cleveland Browns at Philadelphia Eagles: 1 p.m. ET (10 a.m. Arizona time) The coverage kicks off with the Browns and Eagles. The Cardinals will not play either team in the regular season. You will hear the Eagles' broadcast team of Scott Graham and Ross Tucker calling the game. San Francisco 49ers at Las Vegas Raiders: 4 p.m. ET (1 p.m. Arizona time) This game features a division rival the Cardinals will face twice in the regular season in the 49ers and the Raiders, whom the Cardinals face in their preseason finale at State Farm Stadium next week. You will hear the Raiders' broadcast of Jason Horowitz, Rich Gannon and Kirk Morrison. New York Jets at New York Giants: 7 p.m. ET (4 p.m. Arizona time) The Cardinals won't face either team, but Cardinals fans might be interested in watching the Giants because former Arizona State star running Cam Skattebo is a rookie. It is uncertain whether he will play or not, as he is recovering from a hamstring injury. The broadcast team is the Giants' squad of Bob Papa, Carl Banks and Phil Simms. Arizona Cardinals at Denver Broncos: 9:30 p.m. ET (6:30 p.m. Arizona time) Local Arizona fans will not be able to watch this game on NFL Network. The home broadcast is on CBS 5. The Broncos' broadcast team of Steve Levy and Ryan Harris will be on TV.
