New Orleans Pelicans sign former Boston Celtics guard

Jaden Springer has found a new home one week after being released by the Utah Jazz. The former Celtics guard has signed a contract with the New Orleans Pelicans, the team announced. The terms of the deal were not released, but it's safe to assume it's for a league minimum deal heading into training camp this fall. It will be the fourth team for Springer in the past six months after the Celtics dealt him away at the trade deadline in February. The Utah Jazz waived Springer last week due to a roster crunch and the fact that Springer was set to have a guarantee of $400,000 on his contract kick in. Instead, the 22-year-old hit the open market and found a new home with the Pelicans, where he will likely compete for a roster spot under new team president of basketball operations Joe Dumars. The Celtics initially landed Springer at the 2024 trade deadline after giving up a second-round pick to land the defensive-minded guard. Springer ended up winning a title with the 2024 Celtics but only played in 43 games with the team over two seasons, posting 1.9 points and 1.0 rebounds per game before being dealt away this past winter. Boston packaged a second-round pick with Springer to send him to the Rockets in a salary dump and Houston immediately waived the guard amid a roster crunch. Springer joined the Jazz shortly afterwards, ultimately signed a three-year contract that was largely non-guaranteed. He got some additional playing time at the end of the season in Utah, averaging 3.8 points, 2.0 rebounds and 1.4 assists in 13.2 minutes per game. However, that play and his performance in Summer League was not enough to secure his roster spot amid a crowded depth chart in Utah filled with young players, which led Springer to free agency and ultimately New Orleans. With Dejounte Murray sidelined to begin the year in New Orleans with a torn Achilles, a chance will be available for Springer to make the roster as depth as he joins a crowded backcourt that includes Jordan Poole, Jeremiah Fears, Jordan Hawkins and Jose Alvarado. Utah Jazz waive former Boston Celtics guard

The Utah Jazz waived former Celtics guard Jaden Springer on Thursday in what appears to be a financially related move. Springer was set to have a guarantee of $400,000 next season kick in on his $2.3 million contract if he remained on the roster through Friday. With Utah already having 15 players on the roster in addition to Springer, the team opted to cut ties with the defensive-minded guard instead of taking the cap hit on a player who may not make the team. Utah signed Springer back in March following the Celtics dealing him away at the trade deadline in a salary dump to the Houston Rockets. Houston immediately waived Springer after thar deal, leading him to sign a 10-day contract with the Jazz and eventually a three-year contract which was largely non-guaranteed. Springer saw more opportunity on a rebuilding Utah team than he did in Boston, averaging 3.8 points, 2.0 rebounds and 1.4 assists in 13.2 minutes per game. However, the 6-foot-4 guard did not show enough on the offensive end to keep his spot. He played Summer League with the Jazz this summer but a roster logjam has him looking for a new landing spot. The 22-year-old was originally drafted by the Philadelphia 76ers during the 2021 NBA Draft at No. 28 overall. He spent two and a half years with the Sixers before the Celtics gave up a 2024 second-round pick to land him at the 2024 trade deadline. Springer went on to win a title with the 2024 Celtics but only appeared in 43 games with the team over two seasons, posting 1.9 points and 1.0 rebounds per game before being dealt away in February. Springer is no longer eligible for a two-way contract, so he will likely be in the market for a camp invite from an NBA team or certainly would have plenty of interest overseas if he opts to go that route. Why did the Boston Celtics sign former Chicago Bulls wing Torrey Craig?

Why did the Boston Celtics sign former Chicago Bulls wing Torrey Craig? The Celtics had a rising defensive prospect on their roster in Jaden Springer, but elected to trade him away to the Houston Rockets to save money on their tax bill for the season, and replaced his roster spot with a shooting guard who has barely seen the court so far this season. What is the logic with this buyout signing for Boston? What do they expect to get from Craig as a Celtic? Could it be his knockdown shooting from beyond the arc? Or are there are things at play here behind this decision? The hosts of the CLNS Media "How Bout Them Celtics!" podcast, Jack Simone and Sam LaFrance, took some time on a recent episode of their show to talk it over. Check it out below! Boston Celtics' Payton Pritchard shares reaction to Jaden Springer trade

The Boston Celtics traded Jaden Springer to the Houston Rockets on Wednesday, Feb. 5. The impressive Western Conference team subsequently waived the defensive-minded guard. By moving on from Springer, the Celtics reportedly saved approximately $15 million in tax payments, such is the severity of their current payroll. Since waiving Springer, Brad Stevens has moved to acquire Torrey Craig on what is likely a prorated veteran minimum deal. Nevertheless, the decision to part with Springer, who had been impressive in recent weeks, was certainly a shock to some members of the rotation. During a recent postgame news conference after the Celtics fell to the Dallas Mavericks on Thursday, Feb. 6, Payton Pritchard shared his immediate reaction to the news the Celtics had traded Springer. Pritchard praised Springer's professionalism and defensive impact. You can watch the full news conference by clicking on the embedded video above.
