Matthew Berry and Co. discuss player ADPs they expect to rise this summer, highlighting Trevor Lawrence in a pass-friendly Jags' offense, Jauan Jennings' surge with the 49ers, and a 'free lottery ticket' down the board. Now that the NFL draft is behind us and training camps are ramping up we have a much clearer picture of the NFL landscape, it's time to update and expand my overall rankings from Top 50 to Top 100. Did Jags' Travis Hunter graduate from Colorado? It's complicated.
Did Jags' Travis Hunter graduate from Colorado? It's complicated. The university said the two-way football star walked in CU's graduation ceremony on May 8 but is actually scheduled to graduate in December 2025. Show Caption Hide Caption NFL Draft: Sanders falls out of Round 1, Jags take Travis Hunter at No. 2 USA TODAY Sports' Mackenzie Salmon breaks down the biggest storylines from Round 1 of the 2025 NFL Draft. Sports Pulse Numerous news media outlets reported that Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter had graduated from the University of Colorado on May 8, citing social media posts from CU that showed him attending the graduation ceremony and saying he 'GOT THAT DEGREE!' Another CU football post showed Hunter in a video saying he 'graduated in three years.' What actually happened is a little more complicated. He is not scheduled to graduate until December after applying to graduate in fall 2025, according to an athletics department spokesman. He attended the May 8 graduation ceremony in Boulder anyway to be able to experience it now, before he begins his pro football career as the No. 2 overall draft pick for the Jacksonville Jaguars, according to the school. 'Travis walked in (the May 8) commencement ceremony and will graduate with a degree in anthropology in December 2025,' said Steve Hurlbert, the athletics department spokesman. 'He's likely to be a little busy that time of year and he really wanted to experience all the pomp and circumstance.' Hurlbert also noted Hunter has a 3.9 grade-point average. How common is 'walking early' before graduation? It is not that unusual. It's allowed at other schools, too, for different reasons, such as wanting to participate in the graduation ceremony with your friends even if you need to complete a few more classes to get your degree. Actually graduating is still different than attending the commencement ceremony because it requires students to meet all their degree requirements. At CU, students are required to apply to graduate for the semester in which they'll 'officially and successfully' complete all requirements for the degrees and majors they're pursuing, according to the university website. In Hunter's case, Hurlbert said he applied to graduate in the fall of 2025, which ends in December. It's not clear what requirements Hunter has left to complete. Hurlbert declined to say, citing privacy law covering academic records. A message seeking comment from Hunter through his agent was not returned. This explains why Hunter was not listed among the thousands of degree candidates in the CU commencement program for May 8 even though he attended the ceremony. 'CU had 67 student-athletes graduate last week and 103 student-athletes walked in the ceremony, so it's not unusual at all for student-athletes who have graduated last winter or will graduate in August or next December to participate in spring commencement because it's such a great experience,' Hurlbert said. Why did CU's social media indicate he got his degree? The posts from CU football's social accounts led to widespread reports that Hunter had in fact graduated, including the post that said he 'GOT THAT DEGREE!' It showed Hunter in graduation attire with friends saying, 'Boys out here graduating man.' 'It was just a social media staffer who didn't know that (Hunter) was just walking' in the ceremony, Hurlbert said. Hunter himself seemed to confirm it in another CU post when he said he had 'graduated in three years.' That would be approximate if he only has a small amount of degree requirements to complete. He enrolled at Jackson State in January 2022 after graduating high school, according to The Clarion Ledger in Jackson, Mississippi. He transferred to Colorado in January 2023 after head coach Deion Sanders made the same move. After previously being listed as a psychology major at CU, he chose to major in anthropology, the study of humanity. In January, he was named the Division I Academic All-American Team Member of the Year. 'I'm an anthropology major, and I really enjoy learning about different cultures and how they interact with one another,' Hunter said in an email interview with USA TODAY Sports last year. 'Being able to learn about these cultures and skills is incredibly beneficial to me even when playing football. I have the opportunity to learn the importance of accepting and interacting with other people and playing with other people despite their cultural or ethnic makeup.' Shilo Sanders earns master's degree from Colorado Among the 67 student-athletes who graduated in May, the university said Deion Sanders' safety son, Shilo Sanders, earned a master's degree in organizational leadership after previously earning an undergraduate degree at Jackson State. He is now with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as an undrafted free agent. Sanders' youngest son, Shedeur Sanders, the former Colorado quarterback, said on his YouTube show in January that he hoped to graduate at the end of the past semester in May. He was selected in the fifth round by the Cleveland Browns in the NFL draft in April. The university said he is on track to graduate later this year but has not applied for graduation yet. Analyzing Jacksonville Jaguars QB Trevor Lawrence
After four seasons of play from the former first-overall selection, it almost feels like the city of Jacksonville has yet to determine what to make of Trevor Lawrence. Hopes are high, however, thus far his talent has outpaced his play. Back-to-back seasons littered with injuries certainly haven't helped Lawrence find his rhythm. Even so, Lawrence has left a bit to be desired as the team locked their franchise quarterback up with a five-year, $275 million contract last offseason. There is endless discussion that could be had regarding Lawrence, but today I wanted to break down his game and see where his strengths and weaknesses lie as a passer. To do this, I collected his stats from the last two seasons and broke them down into categories: overall, depth, time, pressure, blitz, play-action, and lastly location. His passer rating for each was then computed. [DOWNLOAD: Free Action News Jax app for alerts as news breaks] For the last two seasons, Lawrence has an overall passer rating of 87.39, slightly below the league average. The average fluctuates between 86.0 and 93.0, depending on the season. Based on passer rating, Lawrence has been an average to slightly below-average quarterback since the 2023 season. Not great for the Jags' franchise quarterback. In fairness, that's been in spite of numerous injuries and an offensive scheme from antiquity. Let's get into it! It's no secret that Trevor Lawrence's deep ball is among the NFL's best, if not the best. To no surprise, of the 13 categories analyzed, Lawrence performed best throwing deep. When targeting 20 yards downfield or more, Lawrence had a passer rating of 102.92. Compare that to his short and intermediate passer ratings of 84.72 and 75.33 and it's easy to see why the Jaguars took so many deep shots this past season. It certainly helps with Brian Thomas Jr. at their disposal. Lawrence has to improve in the short and intermediate areas of the field, as his passer ratings in those areas both ranked 26th of 36 this past season. The introduction of Liam Coen and his offense should do wonders for Lawrence going forward. [SIGN UP: Action News Jax Daily Headlines Newsletter] When looking at time to throw, Lawrence did notably better when getting the ball out of his hands quickly. When throwing under 2.5 seconds, Lawrence saw a pass rating of 90.29 compared to just 84.34 when he held onto the ball. It isn't a huge difference, however, the Jaguars' previous offense was heavily predicated on getting the ball out quickly as no team targeted their first read more than the Jacksonville Jaguars in each of the three seasons under Doug Pederson. To no surprise, pressure and blitzes matter a lot. When Lawrence was kept clean, he saw a pass rating of 89.65, compared to 79.89 when pressured. Lawrence is pretty solid under pressure, compared to the rest of the league. He finished 2024 with the 10th-best passer rating under duress. When clean, he finished with an 85.3 rating in 2024, 33rd of 36 quarterbacks. That figure has got to rise going forward. Facing blitzes, however, has not been Lawrence's strong suit. He just has not been very good. Among the 13 categories listed, Lawrence's rating against blitzes was the lowest at just 71.17. When a standard pass rush is sent his way, his passer rating rose to 92.63. Luckily for Lawrence and the Jaguars, he has been among the NFL's least blitzed quarterbacks. It's said a strong run game and play-action are a quarterback's best friend. It might be the lack of a rushing attack that has caused Trevor Lawrence's play-action passing to be less effective. The difference was pretty insignificant. When using play-action, Lawrence's 89.14 rating wasn't all that much higher than his 86.08 rating without. This is an area I expect Coen and company to hammer home this coming season as they renovate the offense. Lastly, I wanted to see how Lawrence performed inside the pocket versus outside of it. Aside from facing blitzes, this was the most drastic disparity. When inside the pocket, Lawrence had a passer rating of 89.14. Outside of it, that number plummeted to just 74.44. Lawrence's legs are certainly an asset as a runner, however, he hasn't performed well when creating out of structure. This is an area where other top quarterbacks are excelling. Lawrence, however, hasn't been able to create in the same ways those other quarterbacks have. This past season, Lawrence completed just 7 of his 29 attempts (24.1%) outside of the pocket. There's far more to look at than just these metrics when reviewing a quarterback's level of play, though it does provide a general idea of where Lawrence excels and maybe struggles. Every statistic has to be seen for what it is. Context is key and must not be forgotten. That said, the Jaguars will need better play from Lawrence going forward if they plan to return to the postseason in 2025. Luckily, they may have found just the staff to point him and the rest of the offense in the right direction under the guidance of Coen and offensive coordinator Grant Udinski Click here to download the free Action News Jax news and weather apps, click here to download the Action News Jax Now app for your smart TV and click here to stream Action News Jax live.
