‘It was startling': Buckhead couple detail finding starving dog that led to R&B singer's arrest
It was earlier this month that a Buckhead couple said they came across a red dog that looked malnourished outside an RV in the parking lot of the Hyatt Centric Hotel. 'You could see his ribs and hip bones. It was startling,' the woman said. Noticing the neglect, the couple said they tried to help by offering the dog food and water. 'That poor dog, when we brought food and water down to it. It looked like he hadn't eaten in six weeks,' the man explained. The couple, who asked not to be identified, spoke exclusively with Channel 2's Brittany Kleinpeter on Friday. They said they called authorities after trying to contact the owner. 'I went by very calmly, and said, 'Do you need any help?' and said we got dog food upstairs, and he instantly said, 'Why would you ask me a question like that?'' the man said. According to an arrest warrant, the dog's owner, R&B singer Jaheim Hoagland, who just goes by Jaheim, was given three warnings by animal control before they took the dog. 'They found them in the RV that was apparently filled with feces and urine,' the woman said. According to the warrant, Jaheim Hoagland was arrested on May 1. Jail records show he was released the next day. He is charged with animal cruelty related to six dogs found on his property, including four pit bulls, a French bulldog, and a mixed-breed hound. The warrant states Hoagland has a 2021 third-degree animal cruelty case in Hillsborough, NJ. In that case, he is alleged to have 15 dogs living in a home with deplorable conditions and failed to provide necessary care to the animals. The Buckhead couple who spoke out for the animals is asking for something to change. 'I wish there were stricter laws to prevent situations like this,' the woman said. One of the dogs from the incident, Taka, is listed for adoption on the Fulton County Lifeline website under 'Dogs at risk' for euthanasia.

Singer Jahiem charged with animal cruelty for the second time in 4 years
R&B singer Jaheim was charged with six counts of animal cruelty and booked into a Georgia jail earlier this month, according to Fulton County Police Department records. Fulton County Animal Control Officers first responded to a call on April 27 about a large, copper-red dog roaming through a shopping mall parking lot looking malnourished, according to the arrest affidavit. Officers found the dog tied up to the back of an RV and left unattended. An unknown male approached officers in an aggressive manner saying, "We not taking the dog," and explained he was outside doing work on the RV, the affidavit states. Animal control left without any further incident. The following day, police accompanied animal control workers to the site, where they encountered the man. He became "irate" and initially refused to identify himself, according to the affidavit; then he stated he was the singer Jaheim, whose legal name is Jaheim Hoagland, the court papers say. Jaheim took the dog out of the kennel for officers to see, and the animal appeared "severely emaciated and his rib cage was protruding through the skin," the affidavit stated. The singer was given a written warning and the officers said they would return to obtain the dog's veterinarian records and do a reassessment. On April 29, animal control received an additional complaint about another of Jaheim's dogs that looked emaciated, the affidavit read. The singer allegedly moved his RV to different locations in the Atlanta area until a search warrant was executed and he was found on May 1. The "Just in Case" singer from Tucker, Georgia, was arrested that day and released on May 2 after posting a $35,000 bond, records show. Six of his dogs found in the RV — named Tweet, Tip, Taka, Tink, Timber and Tanger — were found to not have "adequate food, water, sanitary conditions and ventilation," court documents stated. There were four American pit bull terriers, one French bulldog and one hound type mixed breed found. Three of the dogs were puppies, according to the court records. The puppies were found in kennels with urine and feces covering the floor in an RV with no air circulating, according to the affidavit. They had overgrown nails and some had feces on their paws. The Frenchie canine was found missing patches of hair from its rear end, the affidavit stated. Jaheim is scheduled to appear in court on June 2. It is not clear if the 47-year-old singer has an attorney. Jaheim was previously charged with third-degree animal cruelty in 2021 after officials found multiple emaciated dogs at his New Jersey home, including one that was in such poor condition that it had to be euthanized. Officers found six dogs in crates in separate animal crates in Jaheim's driveway and an additional nine dogs in "in varying stages of emaciation," according to a September 2021 press release from the Somerset County Prosecutor's Office. The "Just in Case" singer, whose full name is Jaheim Hoagland, was charged with six counts of animal cruelty in connection with a May 1 arrest, Fulton County Jail records show. The 47-year-old singer's arrest comes after he was reported various times for the unsanitary conditions he allegedly kept his dogs, according to an arrest affidavit obtained by USA TODAY. He has a 2021 third-degree animal cruelty case in New Jersey, in which he is alleged to have kept 15 dogs in his home with "deplorable conditions," the court document says. Hoagland was taken to Fulton County Jail for his current charges, but he was released on May 2 after posting a $35,000 bond. As of May 29, it is unclear if Hoagland has a defense attorney. How did Jaheim become a suspect of animal cruelty? One incident mentioned in the affidavit occurred on April 27 and involved Fulton County Animal Control officers receiving a call about a malnourished dog roaming through a parking lot in Buckhead. The officers left when Hoagland allegedly approached them in an "aggressive manner" and said they're not "taking the dog," as he was just "outside doing work on the RV." The following day, the officers returned and encountered Hoagland, who was recording them and saying that they "were on private property and this was harassment," according to the affidavit. When the officers explained to the singer that they had received a call about his dog, Hoagland became "irate," refused to identify himself and obstructed the officers' view of the canine. Once officers identified Hoagland, they asked him about the dog, to which the singer explained that his canine's current body state was because he was only 11 months old, but he said he feeds him regularly, according to the affidavit. When Hoagland took the dog out of its kennel, the officers noticed it was "severely emaciated and his rib cage was protruding through the skin," the court document continued. The officers gave Hoagland a written warning, but said they would return to obtain veterinarian records and reassess the dog. After leaving the area, the officers discovered that the phone number given to them was the number of a relative and not Hoagland's, the affidavit says. Puppies found in Jaheim's RV taken to shelter after police search Fulton County police found Hoagland and his RV in a separate Buckhead parking lot on May 1, and after conducting a search warrant of the vehicle, they took him into custody, the affidavit reads. During the search of the RV, six dogs were located, including a 10-week-old pit bull puppy, two 10-week-old liver colored puppies, a 5-year-old pit bull, an 11-month-old brown hound and a French bulldog, according to the affidavit. All the dogs were removed from the RV and taken to the Fulton County Animal Control's shelter, the court document continued. Woman charged with neglect after elderly man found dead in Cobb home
A woman is being held without bond after police say they found a man dead inside a home. Cobb County police say they were called to a home on Stoneridge Drive around 4:30 a.m. on Wednesday morning for an unresponsive man.
