Surge get huge night from dynamic duo to defeat Stingers at WinSport
The Calgary Surge in action Thursday against the Edmonton Stingers. The Surge got big nights from the dynamic duo of Jameer Nelson Jr. and Evan Gilyard II Thursday to help propel them past the Edmonton Stingers in CEBL playoff action. Evan Gilyard II led the way for the Surge, finishing with 28 points, five assists and a huge triple in Target Score Time that put the Surge to within a bucket of the target score of 103. That set the stage for Jameer Nelson Jr., who redirected an inbounds pass up into the bucket to advance the Surge into a western conference final showdown against the Vancouver Bandits on Saturday by a 103-95 margin. Nelson Jr. finished with 26 points, six rebounds, seven assists and two steals. Surge coach Caleb Canales said the club is lucky to have two go-to guards, in addition to a third who consistently come up big in crunch time. 'It's super special and we're super spoiled having both of them,' Canales said of the Surge's guard duo. 'Both are knocking on the door of an NBA contract. They play both ends at a high level, so we've been very spoiled by both of them.' Nelson Jr. and Gilyard II accounted for more than half of the Surge's total scoring. The club also got big performances from Sean Miller-Moore, who delivered 19 points, and Greg Brown III, who added 17 points, eight rebounds and three assists. 'I loved the fight from our group,' Canales said. 'We stuck to our identity, especially in the second half. We did a good job taking Edmonton's punch in the first half and we made plays down the stretch … it was a great way to end our games at home.' It was the third straight year the Surge have knocked out the Stingers in the playoffs. After Edmonton built a slender 50-48 lead at the half, the Surge took over the game in the third quarter, using 12-4 and 13-0 runs to propel the club to a nine-point lead after three. Gilyard was the catalyst in the third quarter, racking up 14 points. The Stingers weren't done however, going on a 12-2 run in the fourth that brought them all the way back to an 87-87 tie game with five minutes left. That was as close as Edmonton got, however, as Gilyard and Nelson took over from there, lifting Calgary to the win. Calgary goes to Vancouver to take on the Bandits, with the winner advancing to a conference final showdown in Winnipeg against the Sea Bears.

Battle of Alberta, hardcourt style: Calgary Surge go up against Edmonton Stingers
The Calgary Surge go up against the Edmonton Stingers, and the winner moves on to play the Bandits in Vancouver. It's playoff time in the Canadian Elite Basketball League and two of the hottest teams down the stretch face each other Thursday in a Western Conference playoff game. The Calgary Surge go up against the Edmonton Stingers, and the winner moves on to play the Bandits in Vancouver. It's the Battle of Alberta, hardcourt style. 'It honestly was like the first rivalry I learned about in the CEBL. … It's a great rivalry and they're a great team to have a rivalry with, and I feel like the regular season was the regular season, and now it's for all the marbles,' said Surge guard Jameer Nelson Jr. Not much separated Calgary and Edmonton in the regular season. The Stingers got the better of the Surge in the season series, but Calgary clinched second place in the second-to-last game of the year by beating the Stingers. The Surge wrapped up the season with four straight wins, and the Stingers won three in a row. The Surge are hoping the home fans can help lift them over the top. 'It's a big advantage. … When you have the crowd on your side, it's obviously a good feeling. It gives you confidence and when you go on big runs and stuff like that, it's a good feeling,' said Surge guard Rugzy Miller-Moore. There's so much on the line in a single-elimination game. Win and you move on to Vancouver. Lose, and your season is over. So how do you approach a game like this? What advice do the coaches have for their players? 'We have a high standard. We just have to be us and play our brand of basketball and our formula—defence to offence—and we just have to play together. Our assistant coaches did a great job of instilling the game plan all week, so we're ready to go,' said Surge head coach Kaleb Canales. 'We're not trying to reinvent the wheel. We've played good basketball all season long. We've had good success against Calgary the last couple of times we've seen them. So, for us it's just trying to be consistent in our concepts—trying to be a little tighter in our execution, certainly, but not trying to do anything out of the ordinary or out of character,' said Stingers head coach Jordan Baker. Three Surge players are finalists for CEBL awards. Miller-Moore is up for Canadian player of the year. And Nelson will go up against teammate Greg Brown III for defensive player of the year.

Surge trio turn into road warriors as Calgary runs past Black Jacks in Ottawa
The Calgary Surge were looking for a spark from their big three to help pull them out of a rut on the road Saturday, and they got it. Calgary got a combined 75 points from Jameer Nelson Jr. Greg Brown III and Sean Miller-Moore to defeat Ottawa 112-101. The win snapped a two-game Surge losing streak. Nelson Jr. led the way with 29 points, six assists and four steals, while Brown had 26 points and 12 rebounds. Miller-Moore chipped in with 20 points, five rebounds and five assists. The Surge hustled hard, snagging 25 rebounds. 'It's part of our identity – it's the effort. Offensive rebounds are usually about the effort, and I think we came in with the tunnel vision mindset today,' said Surge head coach Kaleb Canales. 'We knew it was going to be a tough game on the road in a great environment, a well coached team, and we needed everything we got from everyone who played today.' 'I know on paper, analytically we're not one of the top offensive rebounding teams,' he continued. 'We've had nights like this, but I think this is a season high. 'I think our mindset was that we had dropped two in a row for the first time all year. We hadn't done that and that was a goal of ours. 'We got a serious group that cares about basketball, and they wanted to get this tough win on the road today.' Isaih Moore led the Black Jacks with a career-high 32 points and 14 rebounds. Next up for the Surge is a Monday game in Montreal against the Alliance.
