$10 million in Oregon Lottery bonds could go toward James Beard Public Market

PORTLAND, Ore. () — Oregon lawmakers could allocate $10 million toward the development of the long-awaited James Beard Public Market. On Wednesday, the Oregon House Committee On Economic Development, Small Business, and Trade held a public hearing on : the measure that would dole out lottery bonds to the Downtown Portland site. The market has been in the works for around a decade now, but previous plans failed due to challenges securing a property. HB 3377 would cover future construction and tenant improvement costs. The project would be 'more than just a public market,' according to the bill's chief sponsor Oregon Rep. Shannon Jones Isadore. Subscribe Now 'We all know that Downtown Portland has struggled, but if there's one thing that I've learned in my career thus far, it is that recovery is possible,' Jones Isadore said during the hearing. 'This is the type of… large investment that we need to make to rebuild our economy, and in the heartbeat of our city.' The representative, whose house district includes the central city, added that it is 'up for the state to step up' in the development. James Beard Public Market's Executive Director Jessica Elkan told lawmakers the site will hold about 40 small businesses and employ 200 people. She pointed to the success of Seattle's Pike Place Market, which welcomes a projected 10 million visitors annually. 'It is widely considered the single-most successful economic development project in Seattle's history,' Elkan said. 'This market has helped revitalize their downtown waterfront area and played a key role in building the local economy.' The agency also found that many visitors spend as much on food service as hotel accommodations. Lawmakers will decide on the passage of HB 3377 at a later date.
