Senior citizen in Bengaluru falls victim to cybercrooks, loses Rs 2.5 lakh
Bengaluru: In yet another incident of cyberfraud, crooks extorted Rs 2.5 lakh from a 70-year-old man. Before the fraudsters could empty the victim's account, the latter managed to put a call across to his daughter, who alerted him, saying he was a victim of cyberfraud and helped him contact the cops. In his police complaint, the victim, Janardhan (name changed), a retired person residing in Vijayanagar in West Bengaluru, said the incident took place between May 20 and May 23. According to him, he received a call from 7779075598, with the caller identifying himself as a police officer from Mumbai. The caller claimed that a SIM card purchased with Janardhan's Aadhaar Card details was being used for illegal advertisements and harassment calls, and that a case had been filed against him at Sahar police station, Mumbai. Purporting to connect the call to a "senior officer", the caller then put Janardhan on the phone line with another stranger who insisted that he ought to come to Sahar police station for interrogation. When Janardhan said he was not involved in any crime and refused to visit the police station, citing his old age, he was threatened with arrest if he stepped out of the house or told anyone about the calls. A person who claimed to be a senior CBI officer then made a WhatsApp video call from 9321599806 to Janardhan and told him that according to Reserve Bank of India guidelines, they needed to verify his bank transactions and for that, he ought to transfer a certain amount to the account numbers provided by him. He was also told that the money would be returned to his account once the verification was done. On May 22, Janardhan was told to go to the bank and transfer Rs 2.5 lakh from his account. Subsequently, he was told to make more bank transfers. It was at that point that Janardhan got in touch with his daughter and shared his ordeal, who helped him call the police helpline and file a complaint. According to a senior police officer, Janardhan filed a complaint on May 24, and a case was registered under the Information Technology Act. The officer also said efforts were on to freeze the bank accounts of the fraudsters. The officer advised people who receive such calls to immediately inform their family members or call the cyber helpline or directly get in touch with the police.

Astrologer arrested from Kalaburagi for defrauding Bengaluru cop
Bengaluru: A 50-year-old astrologer has been arrested for allegedly cheating a police constable of over Rs 5 lakh on the pretext of curing her health issues through various rituals. TOI first reported the case in its May 14 edition. At the time, officials had only said the victim was from a police family. On Friday, they confirmed she is a serving constable. The accused, Hemanth Bhat Janardhan, was nabbed in Kalaburagi after the 33-year-old constable complained. Her identity remains confidential as she continues to deal with health issues and the alleged fraud's trauma. DCP (southeast) Sarah Fathima confirmed the arrest and urged any other victims to contact Adugodi police. A senior officer said Janardhan initially promised to return the money, but delayed appearing before the authorities, prompting his arrest in Kalaburagi. He belongs to a family with a three-generation history in astrology and and has a large local following. In Dec 2023, after viewing her photo and horoscope, Janardhan said around 15 spirits were behind her health issues and without his treatment, the constable would suffer serious deterioration. The woman sent him Rs 4.2 lakh digitally and handed over Rs 1 lakh in cash. In Sept 2024, Janardhan held a "special healing session" in a Koramangala hotel, where he cut lemons, burned incense, beat her with a peacock-feather broom, and pulled her hair while chanting, "Soul, go away." He also took Rs 65,000 each from two of her friends for similar rituals. When the victim saw no improvement and asked for a refund, Janardhan stopped responding. Adugodi police subsequently registered a case under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita Section 318 for cheating.

PU-2 registrations surge as students target high scores

Taking exams for all subjects will ensure equality for everyone –Janardhan, a representative of parents The(KSEAB) has commenced the Second PU Exam-2 from April 24, with a majority of students appearing to improve their previous results. Officials reported that 2,72,272 students have registered for the examination this year, a significant increase from last year's 1,49,300 the registered candidates, 1,21,519 are from the Science stream, 64,378 from Commerce, and 86,375 from Arts. Students have the option to retake exams in specific subjects where they wish to improve their scores. While the mainrequires students to appear for all subjects, the Second and Third exams offer flexibility, allowing candidates to focus only on subjects they aim to last year, KSEAB has been offering three opportunities annually for second PU and SSLC students to take their exams. This move, officials said, has helped many students improve their marks and boosted their chances in competitive exams like the CET, where scores significantly impact rankings. However, educationists and parents have raised concerns about fairness, arguing that students appearing for selective subjects could skew the ranking system.'Students opting for only a few subjects affects the fairness of rankings. Appearing for all subjects would ensure equality and uphold social justice for all candidates,' said Janardhan, a representative of year, male students have outnumbered females across all streams. Machilipatnam fishing harbour to be completed by March, 2026: Minister BC Janardhan Reddy
Vijayawada: Infrastructure and investments minister BC Janardhan Reddy affirmed that state govt would complete the construction of the Machilipatnam fishing harbour by March 2026, besides completing the Machilipatnam Port works, which is a long-pending dream of people in the region, at the earliest. Janardhan, along with excise minister and Machilipatnam MLA Kollu Ravindra, home minister Vangalapudi Anitha, labour minister Vasamsetti Subhash, Krishna district collector DK Balaji, AP Maritime Board CEO Praveen Aditya, chairman Damacharla Satya, and APSRTC chairman Konakalla Narayana Rao, inspected the ongoing construction works at the Machilipatnam harbour and port on Monday. Speaking on the occasion, Janardhan said TDP-led NDA govt has expedited the construction of the fishing harbour, which is being constructed for Rs 422 crore, and extended the deadline to complete the project by March, 2026. Accusing the previous YSRCP govt of stalling progress of the fishing harbour works, Janardhan said that the construction works are progressing at a brisk pace after the coalition govt came to power, with 57% of the works already completed. He mentioned that govt is awaiting the technical report from Chennai to resolve the sea mouth opening issue, which is expected within the next 45 days. Additionally, the minister said that govt will complete the construction of the Machilipatnam Port at the earliest. He mentioned that 30% of the port works has been completed, and that construction has been expedited, with chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu holding monthly meetings to review the progress. "Similar to the Chennai and Mumbai seaports, Machilipatnam Port, which is the nearest seaport to Amaravati, will play a strategic role in Andhra Pradesh's development, besides attracting port-based industries," Janardhan added.
