Kraken Recall Top Prospect From The Firebirds
The Seattle Kraken have recalled top prospect Jani Nyman from the Coachella Valley Firebirds. Andy Glass Photography This is the 20-year-old's first call-up to the NHL, and he earned it by recording 26 goals and 41 points in 55 games, leading the team in both categories. Outside of leading the team, Nyman is tied for third in the AHL in goals and first among rookies in goals. Following the trade deadline, GM Ron Francis spoke about Nyman's impressive season, hinting that a call-up would be coming soon. Advertisement "Jani Nyman's got 26 goals, he's No.1 in the American Hockey League for rookie goal scoring and I think he's fourth for rookie scoring in points as well," said Francis. "I think he's fourth overall in goal scoring in the AHL, and that's really good for a young kid. That's exciting, and at some point here we'll give him a look too before the end of the season." Listed at 6'4, 220 lbs, Nyman's rookie season has been better than the Kraken organization would have imagined. He took home Rookie of the Month honours in February and was named as Cale Fleury's replacement for the All-Star game. The second-round pick in the 2022 NHL Draft had an impressive camp, setting the tone for the season to follow. He played in just one preseason game but showed quite a few signs of a player with confidence. Francis compared Nyman's shot to Mikko Rantanen's, showing that the organization believes he can be a star in the NHL. Advertisement The Kraken are back in action on Wednesday when they host the Montreal Canadiens, and it could be when Nyman makes his NHL debut. Wranglers Game Day: News & Notes 3.5.25
The Calgary Wranglers (30-19-4-2) can avoid a disastrous homestand by avenging a Tuesday night 6-1 loss to the Coachella Valley Firebirds, now the top team in the AHL Pacific Division. Right back at it 🥊 — Calgary Wranglers (@AHLWranglers) March 5, 2025 Although these two teams still meet two more times after Wednesday night, the Wranglers need to win out the final games to tie the season series, which the Firebirds have dominated with a 4-1-0-0 record. Calgary starter - Walterri Ignatjew Season: 19 GP / 10-5-3 / 3.58 GAA / .888 SV% Career: 19 GP / 10-5-3 / 3.58 GAA / .888 SV% Coachella Valley starter - Victor Östman Season: First AHL Game Career: First AHL Game Tuesday marked the third time in the past four games against the Firebirds that Calgary has scored a single goal. Can they break through the glass ceiling tonight? Walterri Ignatjew won his last start on Feb. 28 and is 2-0-0-1 in his previous three starts dating back to Jan. 25. Could he get a chance to run with it and spark the team to rediscover their game? The Wranglers have been outscored 16-8 and outshot 102-71 on their current homestand. Although they can't reverse those numbers in a single game, tonight is a gut check moment for this talented roster to turn the page.
