Sea of devotees flocks to Mathura to celebrate Janmashtami

Agency: PTI Mathura/Varanasi (UP), Aug 16 (PTI) Lakhs of devotees from across the world gathered in Mathura on Saturday to celebrate Janmasthami, with pilgrims queuing up since early morning to catch a glimpse of the deity in the birth place of Lord Krishna. Janmashtami was celebrated with great pomp throughout the Braj region, but the main ceremony was held at the Radha Krishna temple within the Bhagwat Bhavan complex here. Officials said the enthusiasm was palpable as devotees sought to catch a glimpse of 'thakur' (god), with queues forming as early as late Friday night at the northern gate of the temple. The eagerness of the crowd persisted late into the night, as the celebrations headed for a climax. The city and the municipal administrations transformed Mathura for the occasion, as roads and crossings were specially decorated, with scenes from 'Krishna Leela' set up as selfie points. Various cultural events hosted folk artistes from different parts of India, showcasing Awadhi, Bundelkhandi, Rajasthani and Haryanvi traditions through their art. Food, water and 'sherbet' were distributed free of cost to the pilgrims at multiple locations. To ensure the safety of the devotees, the city and the temple premises were divided into four zones and 18 sectors, with heavy police deployment at every point, the officials said. Janmashtami was was also celebrated with special rituals in Varanasi. According to the officials of the Kashi Vishwanath Temple, clothes and gifts were sent from here to the Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi in Mathura for the occasion. The ISKCON temple in Vrindavan is celebrating the festival over two days. PTI COR CDN ARI view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. How to perfectly wear a Gopi dress this Janmashtami and channel your inner Radha rani

Janmashtami is tomorrow, August 16th, 2025. And with it comes the perfect excuse to dress up in the most graceful, vibrant attire inspired by Radha herself, the iconic Gopi dress. More than just clothing, it is a celebration of tradition, elegance, and devotion. Whether you are attending a temple event, joining a dance performance, or simply soaking in the festive spirit at home, knowing how to drape and style a Gopi dress flawlessly can take your look from pretty to divine. How to wear a perfect gopi dress on Janmasthami on your own? Start with a flowy skirt or repurpose a lightweight saree into a skirt. Opt for fabrics like georgette, chiffon, or cotton that flow beautifully and allow easy movement for dancing and festivities. Add a vibrant petticoat for extra volume, because more twirl means more charm. The wrap-and-tuck skirt method If using a saree, start by tucking one end firmly into your waist and wrap it around until you get a comfortable fit. Secure with a discreet pin to avoid mishaps. For ready-made skirts, choose one with a good flare to mimic that traditional Gopi silhouette. Dupatta draping for the Radha effect Do not simply throw your dupatta over your shoulder. Instead, tuck one end into your skirt at the waist, bring it diagonally across your torso, loop it behind your back, and drape it gracefully over the opposite shoulder. This gives a traditional yet flattering look, echoing classical temple styles. Playing with colours and details A Gopi outfit is all about vibrancy. Pair a royal blue skirt with a bright yellow dupatta for a Radha-inspired look, or try deep pink with green for a festive contrast. Embroidery, mirror work, or simple golden borders can instantly make the outfit stand out. Accessories that complete the look Add a kamarbandh to define your waist and wear traditional jewellery such as jhumkas, a matha-patti, and payals. Fresh jasmine flowers or gajra around a bun or braid will add a fragrant, graceful touch. Small details make all the difference in transforming your look from simple to divine. And most important, do not forget to do the gopi dots to cimplete the look. Quick style hacks Short on time? Pre-pleated skirts and stitched dupatta drapes are available online for a hassle-free yet elegant appearance. Just slip into your outfit, add jewellery, and you are ready to join the celebrations without a single pleat out of place. By following these steps, you will not just wear a Gopi dress, you will embody the poise, grace, and devotion of Radha herself this Janmashtami.

Mumbai: The mid-Aug holidays—Independence Day, Janmasthami and Parsi New Year—have been spiking the demand for air travel for quite some years now, and the trend has stayed strong this time too. With Aug 15 falling on a Friday, the extended weekend holidayers seem to have booked their short trips as airfares to leisure and religious destinations have peaked for the coming weekend. The most noticeable change is on the Mumbai-Goa route. Airfares on the most popular non-metro destination out of Mumbai had cooled in the recent past with two airports in Goa offering travel options. But this year, if you want to fly out on Friday morning or noon to Goa and return by a noon or evening flight, you will have to shell out Rs 23,000. The cheapest fare on the route is Rs 15,000, but that would give you red-eye flights that depart or land around midnight. Last year, the cheapest 24-hour advance purchase fare to travel from Mumbai to Goa started at Rs 15,000, for convenient timings. In 2024, Aug 15 fell on a Thursday, but with Rakshabandan falling on Aug 19, in 2024, the mid-Aug long weekend stretched to five days. This year, the Aug 15 long weekend is only 3 days long. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Is it better to shower in the morning or at night? This year too, the search and booking trends point to strong intent to travel over the Independence Day weekend. With Independence Day on a Friday, travel demand appears to be peaking two days earlier, on Wednesday, Aug 13, giving early travellers a 5-day window." Among the trending domestic cities are Goa, Udaipur, Jaipur, Puri, Lonavala, Varanasi, Coorg, Mahabaleshwar, Ooty, and Puducherry, he added. The first half of Aug is shaping up to be a peak travel window, with travellers opting for quick escapes.
