Stumbling block in Oude Molen plans
Tenants of Oude Molen Eco Village were given a boost when Heritage Western Cape (HWC) turned down a Heritage Impact Assessment (HIA) application by the provincial government which has proposed a mixed-used development on the site. Last Wednesday May 14, HWC made a decision that the HIA application by the provincial government did not meet the provisions of the National Heritage Resources Act (NHRA). Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of HWC, Dr Michael Janse van Rensburg laid down some of the motivations for turning down the provincial government. According to HWC, the intangible heritage/living heritage has not been sufficiently investigated; there is insufficient information regarding the significance of the site in relation to the broader Two Rivers Urban Park (TRUP) heritage area; more detailed information is required pertaining to the massing of proposed buildings in order to make an accurate assessment of the impact on heritage resources. 'A revised HIA is to be submitted by the provincial government to HWC for further consideration,' says Dr Janse van Rensburg.

UPDATE: Two premature babies abducted from hospital found [Watch]
Two babies who were reportedly kidnapped from a Gqeberha hospital on Tuesday evening have been returned unharmed. In a dramatic conclusion to a harrowing abduction ordeal, two newborn babies who were snatched from Dora Nginza Hospital in Nelson Mandela Bay, were reunited with their mothers on Wednesday afternoon, 21 May. Their return comes just hours after the two premature baby boys were kidnapped on Tuesday evening from the public health facility's neonatal ward. At the time of their abduction, the infants were just four and two days old and still in incubators. According to reports, one of them was also being treated for a broken arm. Premature babies kidnapped from Dora Nginza Hospital A frantic search to find the missing babies was launched by the Gqeberha police's Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit and health authorities. South African Police Service (Saps) spokesperson Sandra Janse van Rensburg confirmed to The Citizen that the infants were reunited with their mother and both boys were in good health. Two female suspects arrested According to Janse van Rensburg, two female suspects were arrested by the FCS. 'One of the Saps officers was exiting the premises of the hospital, when he noticed two females with infants. He immediately approached them and started questioning the women. 'The suspicion of the member was positive, after the infants were identified as the two stolen babies. The two suspects, aged 25 and 26, will appear in the New Brighton Magistrate's Court during the week,' the police spokesperson said. The acting Nelson Mandela Bay District Commissioner Brigadier Loyiso Ngalo commended the Saps team 'who worked tirelessly since the kidnapping was reported'. 'We are grateful that they were found and that they can be reunited with the mothers.' When she returned at 8:30pm to feed the child again, she discovered he was missing. A second mother later arrived at the ward and discovered that her baby son was also missing. Two women captured on hospital CCTV cameras When questioned about the incident earlier this morning, Eastern Cape health department spokesperson, Sizwe Kupelo, said a security guard stationed in the maternity building tried to stop two women who were trying to access the ward carrying a bag. 'The ladies were assumed to be breastfeeding. However, one of them managed to evade the security guard and gain access to the nursery carrying the same bag.' Kupelo added that CCTV footage showed one of the women later using a different door to exit with the bag.

Trial postponed again: Malalane attorney to return to court in June
Zietta Janse van Rensburg has not had her day in court yet. On Monday, a new date was set for her trial on fraud, uttering and forgery charges. Lowvelder reports this follows after Janse van Rensburg's D-Day for trial had to be postponed on February 17 when the recording devices at Malalane Periodical Court had technical issues. Magistrate Jacob Mamabolo then postponed the hearing to April 24 and 25. On April 10, Janse van Rensburg wrote to State Prosecutor Tobie Steyn and said: 'As noted, there are many public and school holidays in that period. It is my father's birthday April 23. I kindly request that if there is any issue that might hinder the proceedings that I am advised in order to spend the first birthday with my father since my studies (2003) and the first ever birthday where my children can spend it with their grandfather. I will preliminarily book the flights for our return on April 23, but it would be highly appreciated if we can extend it with the benefit of the extra days. My last visits to Port Elizabeth were for my mother's passing July 2021 and my father's second heart bypass February 2024.' After having obtained Magistrate Jacob Mamabolo's approval, the case was postponed by agreement between the parties Monday at the Malalane Periodical Court. Her legal representative, Adv Hennie van Rensburg, also withdrew from the case. In a note to Steyn, he wrote: 'Due to non-compliance and receiving no instructions from Mrs J van Rensburg. I hereby withdraw from the case as legal representative. I am not in a position to continue due to lack of instructions, co-operation and a breach of trust envisages failing that the matter should continue on the dates agreed upon, being April 24 and 25. Unless I receive direct instructions within the next 48 hours, I withdraw indefinitely.' On Monday, Janse van Rensburg was back at the Malalane Periodical Court and informed the court that Adv van Rensburg would once again be representing her. The court informed Janse van Rensburg that they could not accept her word about the reinstatement of her legal representative and instructed her to have Adv van Rensburg formally let them know whether he was going to appear on her behalf. The case was postponed to June 25. Breaking news at your fingertips… Follow Caxton Network News on Facebook and join our WhatsApp channel. Nuus wat saakmaak. MILLIONS in power assets lie idle amid continuing energy crisis
While residents of Ekurhuleni endure near-daily power outages, more than R500 million worth of critical electricity infrastructure has been sitting unused in municipal warehouses for nearly a decade. An inventory report from the Department of Energy revealed that prepaid electricity meters, transformers, breakers, switches, and high-voltage cables, valued at approximately R512 million, have gathered dust since 2015. This equipment could be deployed immediately to address urgent repairs and upgrades across the Metro. Also read: Kempton Park resident in trouble after tenant tampers with electricity meter Despite these findings, the Department continues to cite equipment and labour shortages as the reason for delayed repairs, an explanation that is now under intense scrutiny. Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) councillor Denise Janse van Rensburg has raised the alarm, saying the situation reflects severe mismanagement within the Metro's energy services. 'Residents are suffering while life-saving infrastructure rots in warehouses,' said Janse van Rensburg. 'The excuses have run dry. There needs to be full transparency and urgent intervention.' The VF Plus has repeatedly challenged the Mayoral Committee Member for Energy, Mzayifani Ngwenya, over the backlog in service delivery and the apparent contradiction in the Department's justifications. Also read: Terenure resident faces electricity woes Ngwenya has maintained that the inventory is being managed according to service delivery needs and denied any overspending in its procurement. However, concerns are mounting that much of the unused equipment may already be obsolete or damaged, representing a looming financial loss for the City. In response, the VF Plus has called for a full, independent investigation into the management of power inventory since 2015 and a comprehensive audit of all electricity-related equipment procured and stored. The party has also requested a detailed action plan to ensure proper supply, circulation, and installation. Also read: Water and electricity supply in Kempton Park gets worse 'The Department of Energy underpins the economic and social well-being of Ekurhuleni,' Janse van Rensburg added. 'This level of mismanagement is unacceptable. The community deserves transparency and decisive action.' The Kempton Express requested comment from the City of Ekurhuleni by close of business on May 8. At the time of publication on May 9, no comment had been received from the City of Ekurhuleni.
