Trial postponed again: Malalane attorney to return to court in June

The Citizen15-05-2025

Zietta Janse van Rensburg has not had her day in court yet. On Monday, a new date was set for her trial on fraud, uttering and forgery charges.
Lowvelder reports this follows after Janse van Rensburg's D-Day for trial had to be postponed on February 17 when the recording devices at Malalane Periodical Court had technical issues. Magistrate Jacob Mamabolo then postponed the hearing to April 24 and 25.
On April 10, Janse van Rensburg wrote to State Prosecutor Tobie Steyn and said: 'As noted, there are many public and school holidays in that period. It is my father's birthday April 23. I kindly request that if there is any issue that might hinder the proceedings that I am advised in order to spend the first birthday with my father since my studies (2003) and the first ever birthday where my children can spend it with their grandfather. I will preliminarily book the flights for our return on April 23, but it would be highly appreciated if we can extend it with the benefit of the extra days. My last visits to Port Elizabeth were for my mother's passing July 2021 and my father's second heart bypass February 2024.'
After having obtained Magistrate Jacob Mamabolo's approval, the case was postponed by agreement between the parties Monday at the Malalane Periodical Court.
Her legal representative, Adv Hennie van Rensburg, also withdrew from the case. In a note to Steyn, he wrote: 'Due to non-compliance and receiving no instructions from Mrs J van Rensburg. I hereby withdraw from the case as legal representative. I am not in a position to continue due to lack of instructions, co-operation and a breach of trust envisages failing that the matter should continue on the dates agreed upon, being April 24 and 25. Unless I receive direct instructions within the next 48 hours, I withdraw indefinitely.'
On Monday, Janse van Rensburg was back at the Malalane Periodical Court and informed the court that Adv van Rensburg would once again be representing her.
The court informed Janse van Rensburg that they could not accept her word about the reinstatement of her legal representative and instructed her to have Adv van Rensburg formally let them know whether he was going to appear on her behalf.
The case was postponed to June 25.

Man sentenced to 222 years for rape and robbery

Notorious rapist and sexual offender, Lesley Morwamashobe Mohlala, has been handed a heavy sentence of 222 years imprisonment for rape and robbery. Mohlala has long terrorised communities across Nebo and Hlogotlou policing areas in Sekhukhune District. In the areas, he targeted government buildings, clinics, traffic stations, public works offices and various other public facilities. In March 2018, the 33-year-old Mohlala was arrested at Hlogotlou SAPS for rape and his bail application was rejected. A few months down the line, in October in the same year, Mohlala escaped from lawful custody while being transported to Witbank Prison. During his escape, Mohlala committed various crimes, including robbing security officers of their firearms and cell phones and stealing money and valuables from other victims. In April 2023, he was re-arrested by the Nebo Jane Furse tracking team at a Jane Furse hiding place and charged with eight robberies. Additionally, DNA evidence linked him to 2 additional rape cases that occurred while he was an unknown suspect. The Polokwane High Court found Mohlala guilty on 23 counts and sentenced him to a total of 222 years' imprisonment. 'The court ordered that 10 years imprisonment on count 1 does not run concurrently with counts 2 to 25, with a minimum sentence of 15 years imprisonment on counts 2 to 25,' read the police statement. The police arrested a 47-year-old woman and a 48-year-old man for allegedly abusing their two daughters, aged two and eight, in Bloubergstrand, Western Cape, on Tuesday, 10 June 2025. According to Arrive Alive, the suspects are facing multiple charges which include child pornography, rape, sexual assault, and sexual grooming. A multidisciplinary team comprising members of the National and Western Cape Serial and Electronic Crime Investigations (SECI) Units, officials from the Department of Social Development (DSD), supported by the FBI and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), located the suspects at a residence identified through joint investigative efforts. The two victims were rescued and placed in a place of safety. Let us know by leaving a comment below or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 0211. 'No food, job or phones': Afrikaner 'refugee' family 'stranded' in US

An Afrikaner 'refugee' family have reportedly been left stranded in the US, and is appealing for help on Facebook. The startling revelation was made by a South African expat on TikTok. Two groups of white South Africans have taken up 'refugee status' in the US in recent weeks, as part of a programme open to 'persecuted' people. On her TikTok account, South African expat @catmpt revealed that she had come across an Afrikaner 'refugee' family in dire need of help. The family of four was reportedly stranded at a hotel in Montana without food, money, or a cellphone. Instead, they had reached out to a Facebook group for help. The woman said of the 'refugees': 'They were understanding that they would be arriving here for complete assistance. People thought they would be arriving at a house, a job, medical insurance, and other things. It isn't that way at all. She added: 'Because of the political situation, they are really struggling to get jobs'. The woman revealed that she had left South Africa more than a decade ago, but had gone through a lengthy process. She also criticised Afrikaner 'refugees' for having unrealistic expectations. She continued, 'One side of me is like, 'F**k that. 'My husband and I went through all of the red tape, and we got our visas…we've got our green card. We've been here ten years. We did everything the right way. 'Here, these people, regardless of what they were promised, just came here expecting everything'. @catpmt What would you do? #traumatok #southafricanrefugees #southafricatiktok #tsek #anxiety #livingintheusa ♬ original sound – Cat's Tales Last month, the Department of International Relations (DIRCO) stated that South African 'refugees' in the US would not have access to any diplomatic assistance whilst abroad. The 'persecuted' South Africans would instead be assisted by the US Refugee Admissions Programme (USRAP), which was signed as an Executive Order by President Donald Trump. As part of the Afrikaner Act, the group was also given Priority-2 refugee status, which provides them with start-up assistance like money, jobs, and even a house. According to DIRCO spokesperson Chrispin Phiri, refugees 'simply can't return home for a braai and go back'. He added: 'Even the word itself refugee suggests that you are seeking refuge from a particular country. 'You can't be seeking refugee status, then go back home, have a braai, then go back. It defeats the purpose of you being protected and a refugee of a particular country,' he said For Afrikaner 'refugees' hoping to return home willingly for good, voluntary repatriation is always an option. Organisations like the UNHCR help those who wish to travel back to their countries by providing financial assistance. DIRCO added that 'refugees' would be welcomed back as citizens. However, they would have to revoke their status in order for this to happen.
